Suffolk Yacht Harbour in February 2002 when the maximum number of craft were wintering ashore. Although it looks pretty well choc-a-block, a more organised approach with variable spacing will free up plenty of space to carry out the West Harbour enlargement programme. Aerial photograph: Airviews from Jonathan Dyke and Mike Spear, Directors. Our first issue of Harbour Light certainly seemed to get a universal ‘thumbs up’ from the 4,500 people who received it and all our partners here at Suffolk Yacht Harbour report very positive feedback from their clients. We trust you’ll enjoy No 2 just as much. away from the Harbour Master’s office in the main building out on to the marina in a new hut next to the fuel berth from where VHF contact and control will be run on Channel 80. Not a lot of people know that! Still on an environmental note, Suffolk Yacht Harbour is pleased to work closely with English Nature and the Suffolk Wildfowl Trust in preserving our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and helping to protect rare species located within it. New Berthing Master’s Office next to the fuel pontoon Did you know we’re an SSI? Suffolk Yacht Harbour STAFF PROFILE NO 1 To the uninitiated, that’s an area of Special Scientific Interest. Why? Well the answer lies in the soil. If you take a few steps along the footpath that runs behind the workshop, you’ll notice a sandy outcrop over to Falling as it does on the ‘central’ weekend of the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the 5th Port of Felixstowe Regatta promises to be better than ever. We look forward to making our facilities available to all our old friends and hopefully - making many new ones. JOHN NUNN Yard Foreman John is now in his 19th year at Suffolk Yacht Harbour and is, for sure, one of its greatest assets. Apart from being a superb craftsman (pictured above putting the finishing touches to a fabulous new teak deck on the Swan 44 Avista) he has the unflappable temperament which ensures the relentless smooth running of the yacht harbour, year after year. He’s had his own boat continuously from the age of ten and built this Yachting Creating space The enlargement of the West Harbour, starting in July, will cost us precious hardstanding space - but we have a neat solution. 50 more big-boat berths Monthly Senior while an apprentice shipwright at Whisstocks, Woodbridge. Other wooden boats followed including a Deben Cherub and a ‘Z’ 4-tonner before getting the racing bug with his Seamaster 925 Legacy (below) in which he won the Haven Series in 1980. He also crewed for Mike Spear on Moustique and spent three years campaigning the SS34 Morning All - sister ship to the legendary Morning Cloud. Nowadays, John can be found cruising the East Coast with his wife on their Seamaster 29 Juniper. The redevelopment of the West Harbour is still set to begin this summer and, when complete, will provide fifty new big-boat berths. The downside of this much needed expansion will be the loss of hardstanding space. And after studying the ‘sardine can’ appearance in the aerial photo, there does not appear to be an obvious solution. But we’ve found one. If you wander around the site, there are many examples of smaller boats arranged with lots of space between them. This is because the Travel Lift is 20’ wide and cannot put them any closer together. Now we are taking delivery of a very clever Dutch Roodberg boat mover that can adjust its width to place boats in a row with minimum waste of space. This does not mean that you won’t have room to work on your topsides. We’ll still be keeping a minimum separation between boats. But the overall layout will be more efficient. Above: While the Travel Lift’s 20’ track width gives good spacing for big boats it wastes space in the placement of smaller craft (right). Our new Roodberg Boat shifter (above right) is fully adjustable and can put smaller boats closer together to maximise the reduced hardstanding after the West Harbour is completed. New Berthing Master’s Office We are streamlining the ‘processing’ of visiting craft by re-locating Harbour Control the left which is a great deal more interesting (if you are a geologist) than it may at first appear. It’s actually the southern end of a seam which runs north and next sees the light of day at the Rocks on the River Deben. Apparently the seam is rich in fossils and other things that The Yankees are back! Anyone who came to our sensational Regatta party last year is unlikely to have forgotten the music provided by the remarkable British Yankees Blues Band. The lads had flown over from the States specially - thanks to sponsorship provided by Suffolk Yacht Harbour, Rig Magic, and Quantum Parker & Kay. Well the good news is the sponsors have dug deep once again and they are back for another unmissable pre-Regatta bash in the marquee right by the Lightship. It’s on Saturday 1st June from 7.30pm, admission to Regatta participants is FREE, and there will again be plenty of food and drink on sale. Don’t miss it! harbour light Quantum Parker&Kay French Marine Motor “It’s all happening in 2002” Two quarts into a pint pot John Parker’s top team of young sailmakers had a busy and successful 2001 and all the indications are that this year will be even more labour intensive. Memorable Classics Anyone involved in yachting will look back on 2001 as a classic year. The America’s Cup Jubilee at Cowes must rank as the most spectacular sailing event since the heady days of the 1930s, a time when sails were made of cotton, flax and silk. Sail technology has made huge advances since then and the Quantum Sail Design Group is at the leading edge of this revolution. It’s been a busy old winter for French Marine’s two young engineers Matt Pearson and Jason Carrie. One of the more challenging jobs was to replace the old petrol units in a Sun Cruiser 32 with a pair of dynamic new 250hp Volvo Penta KAD supercharged turbo diesels with full electronic controls. That’s the Spirit! Following a close relationship with the highly desirable, Spirit Class yachts - built in Saxmundham - we are now in the process of designing and building a full wardrobe of high-tech sails for the first Spirit 70, due to be commissioned and launched at Suffolk Yacht Harbour this summer. Spirit 37 T 12 Metre Jubilee Quantum Parker & Kay was pleased to have had the opportunity to build a full inventory of sails for Alexander Falk’s stunning classic 12 Metre ‘Flica II’ for the Jubilee Regatta. We’ll come sailing with you and take a series of digital pictures of sail shape which are then loaded into our computer and analysed by very sophisticated new sail design software. Guided by this data, we’ll carefully dismantle the sails and then accurately re-assemble them with a new lease of life. Renew or re-cut? If your sails have lost their performance edge and you don’t relish the prospect of a new suit, we may well be able to improve things by skillful Well known on the classic circuit, ‘Flica II’ quickly established herself as one of the front runners during the Jubilee regatta which also doubled as the 12 Metre World Championships. Following some very close racing in the seventeen strong classic 12 Metre fleet, Flica II finished a highly creditable 3rd overall, also taking the prize for the first amateur helmsman. Yacht Fair 2001 was a great success. Now regarded as The East Coast Boat Show, we had over one hundred yachts on display. Matt Pearson (left) and Jason Carr the Sun Cruiser’s new 250hp Volvo average viewed some five boats in the show prior to making an offer – where else can so many boats be seen in one location? The show will be taking place between October 24th and 27th this year. We have invested for the future, with the HPYC, in purchasing the marquee that will be used both by the club and ourselves for our respective events. The Earls Court Boat Show in January produced results far in excess of the previous year with a good number of yachts sold by us. Jeanneau were our market leaders – they offer tremendous value for money with the package of equipment that is included in the standard price. We believe that Jeanneau build their yachts to a very different quality to many of their competition – they do not rely on internal mouldings to form part of the structure of the boat - which enables them to produce a more traditionally wooden interior which is very stiff and easy to repair. The X-Yachts dealership is new to us and we are pleased to say that we have sold a number of X-332s to the East Coast from the show. We have taken delivery of our new IMX-40 and look forward to seeing you behind us on the race course! EAST has its own fleet of five National Squib dayboats. The first, Easternairs, was launched in 1996 by Suffolk-based writer, broadcaster and yachtswoman Libby Purves. Successful fund-raising has enabled EAST to continue adding to the fleet and the fifth, Royal Spirit, was launched by the Princess Royal who visited EAST at Suffolk Yacht Harbour last year to open its purpose equipped training room. We are actively looking for new disabled members and their carers who would like to get involved in sailing.
