Celebrating Ruth Friendly Caring for Community Riverdale Neighborhood House Annual Gala October 25, 2015 “The world’s best elementary school teacher...” That’s what Fred Friendly, the late renowned journalist, called his wife Ruth. Though she has long since traded elementary school in Scarsdale for graduate school at Columbia, she’s still asking questions so hard the only way you can answer them is to think. Thank you, Ruth, for all you’ve done for our Riverdale community and our journalistic community. In addition to serving on the Board of RNH, Ruth is on the Board of Riverdale Senior Services while she continues to work as the Director of Media and Society Seminars at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. We are so thrilled to have the construction project behind us as we are now planning for the future. Already, many new programs and services have begun in the new space including sports leagues, healthy living activities and play groups for young families. Of course, we would not have this building without the generous support of our local elected officials: Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Jeffrey Klein, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and Councilmember Andrew Cohen. In addition we recognize the support of former Councilmember Oliver Koppell, as well as the offices of Congressman Eliot Engel for their support, advice and constant encouragement throughout this long-awaited project. The first year of full (school) day pre-Kindergarten at RNH was well received by our families and over 200 selected RNH as their first choice in the new online enrollment system at the Department of Education. The expanded SONYC (Schools Out NYC) program at IN-Tech earned a rating of “excellent” for its creative approach to enrichment and we are launching another SONYC program right here at RNH to serve students from our area of the Bronx. Today, more than ever, it is only with the support of you, our donors, that we are able to meet the ever-changing needs of children, families, teens and seniors in the northwest Bronx. With your assistance RNH is well-positioned to meet the needs and challenges of the 21st century. Josephine Perrella, President Daniel Eudene, Executive Director We proudly honor Ruth Friendly R uth Friendly has been an active board member of Riverdale Neighborhood House for the past 8 years. She also serves on the Riverdale Senior Services board, and over the years has served on the Riverdale Mental Health Board and the Fieldston Property Owners Association. Currently Ruth is Director of Media and Society Seminars at Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. In addition, she is a Commissioner on the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination, Court of Appeals. She also serves as a panel member for the Disciplinary Committee of the Appellate Division, New York Supreme Court. Before trading in her blackboard for the television screen, Ruth Friendly taught for 17 years in the Scarsdale public school system and worked extensively on curriculum development for grades K through 6. In 1981, she left the classroom and joined her husband Fred Friendly to work on the Media and society Seminar programs, serving as researcher, editor, producer and executive producer. Over the years, she was an integral part of the team that received countless awards for many landmark PBS series, beginning with THE CONSTITUTION: That Delicate Balance. She has produced over 200 non-televised programs for civic, legal, business and educational organizations that Fred moderated. For 16 years, Ruth served as Vice President and Senior Editorial Director at Fred Friendly Seminars named for Fred after he retired. Ruth has always brought meticulous journalistic standards to the task and a great educator’s love of the teachable moment, when just the right question can probe and open minds to the complexities of a particular challenging issue. Ruth has lived in Riverdale since 1968, where she and Fred raised their six children: Andrew, John, Michael, David, Lisa and Richard. Riverdale Neighborhood House (RNH): A Vital Partner In Our Community F or 143 years, RNH has been an anchor institution in the Northwest Bronx, providing human services to an ever-changing community. Throughout our history, we have worked to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood and to foster respect among our diverse residents. Today, RNH continues to keep the community strong. We have been instrumental in establishing and supporting new partner agencies. Organizations that RNH helped found include The Riverdale Press, Riverdale Senior Services, and the local branch of The New York Public Library. More recently, it has provided meeting space for the Riverdale Nature Preservancy, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, Toastmasters and the Girl Scouts. Additionally, RNH continues to host a community supported agriculture program – bringing organically-grown produce, meats, and other products directly from upstate farmers to our Bronx community. We sponsor a Youth Market at RNH whereby teenage interns sell farm-fresh goods from a stand at the agency as they learn about business and nutrition. RNH’s support for local children begins well before they enter our Teen Program. The Early Childhood Program is one of only two Riverdale pre-schools accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We are committed to helping the community’s most needy families through the sliding scale supported by the scholarship fund from our loyal donors. As part of Mayor de Blasio’s efforts to expand UPK, the RNH early childhood program is a full day UPK provider and all classrooms are open until 6 PM to meet the needs of working families. The Schools Out New York City (SONYC) at IN-Tech Academy (MS/HS 368) is going strong, receiving a rating of “excellent” on our most recent evaluation. The program offers enrichment activities to 135 middle school students each day. This year we are adding another SONYC program right here at Neighborhood House. This new program will provide structured activities to middle school students from the local area schools. The collaborative effort with fellow settlement house Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) has successfully created each of our services within the other agency. Now, RNH has a full time College Directions Coordinator while KHCC has the capacity to run internships in their neighborhood. Combined, we are better equipped to help youth strive toward success. and was referred to TRP two months ago. During her intake interview she was coherent, pleasant, and cheerful. On one of these routine calls Mrs. M was not as cheerful as on previous calls and it was obvious that something was wrong. We connected her to a social worker and her doctor who realized she was having breathing issues. Since then, Mrs. M has been seen, treated and is under the care of a pulmonary specialist and has 24-hour care. We are so thrilled that the three “hill schools” continue to enhance services in the RNH After-School Program. Horace Mann and Fieldston are focusing on academic enrichment. And new this year, Riverdale Country School is adding an athletic component with student-athletes running sports programming under the supervision of the Athletic Director. Our new building has helped RNH expand services. We now have sports leagues for children, health promotion workshops such as meditation and Zumba. We are grateful for the generosity of Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Jeff Klein, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and former Councilman Oliver Koppell. Two new capital grants, one from Senator Klein and one from Assemblyman Dinowitz, will allow RNH to update its grounds and facilities as the new building is completed. RNH’s volunteer-driven Telephone Reassurance Program remains a highly effective way of helping keep frail older adults safe and connected to the world outside their home. The demand for our service continues to be at record levels with over 100 clients. For example, Mrs. M is 91-year-olds The Board of Directors, staff and participants of Riverdale Neighborhood House are thrilled to celebrate past achievements and future successes with our supporters this evening. It is only with your ongoing support that we will continue to flourish.
