Community Programs
At the Riverdale Y, individuals and families of all backgrounds and abilities gather to grow, to learn, and to
deepen their understanding of themselves and their connections to one another.
Inspired by Jewish values, we strive to improve the quality of life in the Riverdale community and to celebrate its
uniqueness and diversity. Our cultural, social, educational, recreational and wellness programs offer members of
all ages and backgrounds multiple pathways into the richness of our local community life.
Through our programs and partnerships, The Riverdale Y serves as the central gathering place for the full
spectrum of the Jewish community and for the local community as a whole.
IHouse
Israel House (IHouse) brings a taste of Israel to Riverdale! From our Sunday Gym-bo programs, to our special Jewish
holiday celebrations, to our Hebrew book club — and much more! IHouse creates a place for Israelis, as well as
the larger Riverdale/Westchester Jewish community, to connect around their love of Israel. In particular, IHouse
supports Israeli families to have a place to gather, celebrate their heritage, and enhance their children’s fluency
with their homeland culture and language. Some of our most popular events include Israeli Kabbalat Shabbat at
local synagogues, Purim Carnival, communal Yom Hazikaron memorial service, family camp weekend, and
Lag BaOmer bonfire BBQ. For more information, please contact Hadas Oded at Hoded@RiverdaleY.org or visit
www.RiverdaleY.org/ihouse.
The Sarah Lily Fund for Adoption
As part of our mission to strengthen families,
build community, and promote Jewish
identity and continuity, The Riverdale Y has
established the Sarah Lily Fund for Adoption.
The fund was created by a loving family
who wanted to pursue this important path.
It is understood adoption is an expensive
undertaking, and the fund provides two
$5,000 grants annually to help Jewish families
being formed by adoption. Application
deadlines are May 15 and November 15. You
may find more information about the fund,
including eligibility and an application,
at www.RiverdaleY.org/sarahlilyfund. For
questions, please call 347-913-4386 or email
SarahLilyFund@RiverdaleY.org.

Interfaith Teen Initiative
The Riverdale Y is proud to sponsor Interfaith
Teen Connections, generously funded by
UJA-Federation of New York's Commission on
the Jewish People and in partnership with
Congregation Tehillah, Manhattan College,
Al Imam Mosque, and Islamic Cultural Center.
This initiative brings together teens from
multiple faith and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Through community service projects, holiday
gatherings, and cultural exchange, our teens
learn from one another, work together,
establish new friendships and have a lot of fun.
Learn more about this exciting initiative
by contacting Wendy Levinson at
WLevinson@RiverdaleY.org.
Café Europa
The Riverdale Y Senior Center hosts a vibrant social
program, on the first Thursday of each month, for
Holocaust survivors and victims of Nazi displacement.
The program offers seminars, entertainment, access
to a social worker, and other resources. Most of all,
it provides a very special socializing opportunity at
a catered lunch. Café Europa is supported by a grant
from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against
Germany.
Breast Cancer Support Group
In collaboration with SHARE Ongoing,
support groups are for women who have
recently been diagnosed with breast
cancer, who are still undergoing treatment,
and who have completed treatment.
Come share experiences, feelings, and
information. For more information, email
Bettee Clark at bettee.clark@gmail.com.

Gallery 18
Every month, the Riverdale Y proudly displays artwork of local artists, photographers, students and
historians in our newly-renovated gallery halls. The perfect showcase for artists to display their latest
collections, we host a reception for our artist-of-the-month, offer tours, and host Q&A’s with the artist.
When artwork is for sale, a portion of the proceeds support The Y’s arts programming and scholarships.

The Riverdale Y Sunday Market
The Riverdale Y Sunday Market runs 9:00 AM–2:00 PM from May through November at Riverdale Kingsbridge
Academy-corner of Independence Avenue and West 237th Street. The Market offers fresh, high-quality food
grown or produced locally. This family-friendly seasonal market is a community gathering place for shopping and
socializing, providing activities for children (and their parents) as well as music and fun! The market also fosters
a direct connection between local shoppers and small-scale farmers and food producers. Riverdale Y members
receive a 10% discount with most vendors. For questions, please contact Kelly McLane, Market Manager, at 718548-8200 ext 203 or Sundaymarket@RiverdaleY.org.

The Riverdale Y
2016-2017
“Sunday – Swim?”
.....Alex would ask his mother. Alex is a
22 year old who loves the water and also
happens to be severely autistic. He’s
been receiving one-on-one swimming
lessons for about 2 years. Although
communication is challenged by Alex’s
limited language, he trusts Jackie and
follows her instruction. Alex’s mother,
Maria, signed him up for the exercise and
for water safety. She didn’t anticipate
how swimming with Jackie on Sunday,
would become the highlight of his
week. Drawn to the family-oriented
neighborhood, Maria moved to Riverdale
just before Alex was born. The Y has long
been a part of Alex’s world. It’s where
he practiced martial arts and where he
gained an appreciation for live theater,
coming to see youngsters perform Peter
Pan and Beauty and the Beast, among
other productions. An avid runner too,
Alex has completed the Riverdale Run 5K
for the past 4 years with his mother and
his teachers in tow. Alex looks forward to
the annual race, hanging the flyer on his
wall months in advance, as a reminder.
Now he looks forward anxiously to his
Sunday Swim. As Alex jumps into the
deep end and makes his way down the
pool, his doting mother contemplates,
one day, learning to swim herself.

A Butterfly Story
Jaclyn is a beautiful, inquisitive 4 year old who loves
to swim and play with her friends. Last year, Jaclyn
began the year at a local school in Riverdale, but she
soon became withdrawn and uninvolved in the class.
After careful thought, and some shopping around,
her family transferred her to the Riverdale Y’s Early
Childhood Center. They were looking for structured
daily activities, which would actively engage Jaclyn,
as well as a positive social environment and warm
teachers. They found that at the Y.
Jaclyn’s father, Jon, boasts that, “Her teachers,
Jenita and Tamoy, did a great job at helping her
acclimate, especially since she began attending after
the school year had started. They were always very
warm, patient, and understanding with her. Jaclyn
adjusted very quickly, and was excited about going to
school every morning, and about learning new things.
She was especially excited about their project where
they saw an actual caterpillar change into a butterfly.
She talks about her teachers and friends at home all
the time.”
Outside of the classroom, you can find mom and dad
with Jaclyn, Ellie and 5-month old Bram swimming at
the Y on Sundays. And this fall you might even catch
them tumbling around in a gymnastics or dance class
after school.
And now Jaclyn’s family is excited for little sister
Ellie to start the 2's class at the Riverdale Y ECC in
September. They have no doubt that she'll love the
school, and that it will be great for her development.

J
Smile
essica Lavery is a true Riverdale Rising Star, and not
because she owns the stage. She does, but because of
her very personal story of triumph. As a young girl,
it was evident that she was painfully shy. What she was
dealing with, why she never spoke, was less apparent but
very real. Now 22, Jessica has blossomed into a charming
leader with a promising future.
Laurie Walton, Director of Performing Arts, met 10
year-old Jessica in 2004, when she enrolled in Summer
Stage. Born with a cleft lip, and terribly insecure about
her acute dental issues, Jessica avoided speaking, so as
not to draw attention to herself. Laurie didn’t know the
severity of Jessica’s case and the treatments she had
been undergoing. But Laurie saw a sparkle, heard beauty
in Jessica’s singing voice, and was set on nurturing it.
Jessica was hooked after her first Summer Stage
experience and developed a love for musical theater.
As a junior, she envied the connections she saw among
the older kids. By the time she was in the teen program,
she enjoyed that same closeness and comradery and
felt confident enough to be herself. She recalls fondly,
performing larger-than-life characters, such as Tracy
Turnblad in Hairspray and Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street.
Like many of the teen performers, Jessica transitioned
from a camper to counselor, returning every summer
even while at college. Now a confident leader, Jessica
has been the co-director of Summer Stage for the past
3 years. Jessica insists it was the Rising Stars theater
program that made the biggest difference in her life:
“Not only did I become a better performer through RRS.
I became a better me.” She thanks Laurie and RRS for
helping her find her voice and for providing her the tools
to achieve her goals.
Jessica is about to embark on a new and personally
meaningful journey at the School of Dental Medicine,
Stony Brook University. We anticipate Jessica will inspire
many smiles for years to come.

Riverdale Y Signature
Events
Bring your family and friends to celebrate with the entire Riverdale
community at our annual signature events
OPEN HOUSE – SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11
As we kick off our exciting fall programs we invite you to enjoy our pool, gym, and
fitness center for FREE from 10 am to 2 pm. Sample classes; moon bounce; face painter;
shuttles to Sunday Market and to NFL Flag assessments/combine at Fieldston School.
Special one-day sales and promotions! The day includes a special 9/11 community
mitzvah project to pay tribute to first responders.
FAMILY FUN DAY & CHANUKAH CELEBRATION - DECEMBER 25
This year, celebrate the first day of Chanukah at our annual Family Fun Day. Enjoy potato
latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts), a dreidel competition, build-your-own menorah
contests, and join a communal menorah-lighting. And, of course, we will have all the
usual Family Fun Day activities including family-friendly movies in the theater, bouncehouse, face-painting, gym time and indoor swim. Adults can also work out in the fitness
center. Suggested donation of $20 per family. All proceeds support scholarships for the
nursery school, camp and after-school programs for children.
PURIM CARNIVAL - MARCH 12
Go wild at the best Purim party in Riverdale...Israeli-style! Enjoy gaga pit, arts and crafts,
hamentaschen baking, bouncy castle, a masquerade party with DJ, Hebrew story time
and much more for the whole family. Brought to you by IHouse.
BROADWAY GALA - APRIL 2
Join us for an incredible evening as some of Broadway's most talented musicians and
actors give of their time. Join members of the Riverdale Rising Stars for a unique, onenight-only performance. The evening also features cocktails, dinner, and silent auction.
This year we honor Gerald Goldsmith for his 40+ years of dedicated service. Gerry has
helped steer The Y as a board member since 1972 and has brought world class music
to Riverdale as Producer of Jazz at The Riverdale Y. Gala details will be announced this
winter at www.RiverdaleY.com/Gala.
RIVERDALE RUN AND LAG BAOMER - MAY 14
Join 1000 runners and walkers this Mother's Day for a 1/2 Marathon, 10K, or 5K Run/Walk
through the scenic slopes of Riverdale. When you participate, you help raise funds to
provide scholarships for camp and afterschool programs. This year, the fun continues
at our annual Lag BaOmer bonfire and BBQ featuring great food, great music and a real
backyard bonfire. Registration for individuals and teams opens January 2017 at
www.RiverdaleRun.com.
