Welcome
For Berlin’s cinema-going public, Berlinale Talents has lots
to offer. In various summit events, the public can enrich
the festival experience by following panel discussions and
presentations by the Berlinale’s most exciting names.
In this latest edition, Berlinale Talents stays true to
its core mission to bring 300 of the best emerging
film professionals from across the globe to Berlin
to network, attend summit events and develop
their projects with access to a line-up of worldclass experts.
Berlinale Talents aims to raise questions that ad
dress the developments of an industry that is in
constant flux. Every year cultural and technological
developments change the stakes of film production, exhibition and viewership. The programme is
a direct response to this dynamism, insofar that it
Berlinale Talents 2015
equips filmmakers with the tools to identify and
cope with today’s most pressing questions.
We want to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank
you to all those who support Berlinale Talents, and
in particular to our principle and co-partners: Creative Europe MEDIA, a programme of the European
Union, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Medienboard
Berlin-Brandenburg, Canon, Federal Foreign Office
and the German Film Fund.
We are thrilled to celebrate this 2015 edition with you,
our 300 Talents and Berlin’s cinema-loving public!

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
Berlinale Talents
Sunday, February 8
Cracking open and reconfiguring notions of spat
iality will be high on everybody’s agenda this year.
Members of the Berlinale International Jury take
the stage at the first public master class on Sunday,
February 8 at HAU1, only a stone’s toss away from
Potsdamer Platz, to kick off a series of events in
which this theme will frequently recur. In this opening session Golden Bear winner Claudia Llosa (The
Milk of Sorrow) will describe how her films echo
from very specific local and indigenous cultural
spaces, and star director Darren Aronofsky (Black
Swan) will comment on how his protagonists activate the dramatic spaces in his films, for instance
through dance.
Monday, February 9
The Place for Space: HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1)
2015: A Space Discovery
Film gives motion to space and can also put spaces into motion.
At Berlinale Talents, over 140 experts on space and cinema including
Andreas Dresen, Ursula Meier, Joshua Oppenheimer, Joanna Hogg,
The Yes Men, Wim Wenders and Bong Joon-Ho embark on an
expanding six-day voyage of discovery.
Most of today‘s movie screens are still flat surfaces, but within them
open a cinematic universe of infinite dimensions and depths. This
year’s edition of Berlinale Talents focuses on the theme “2015: A Space
Discovery.” Technically and aesthetically, cinematic space is continually being reinvented, just as daily living spaces are tangibly being
transformed by political and economic upheavals. With their roots
firmly planted in their own local contexts, filmmakers are not lost in
space and navigate across borders and in multiple dimensions.
04
Berlinale Talents 2015
Drama series writer, director and producer Matthew
Weiner (Mad Men) leads a master class on how to
create stories as catchy as good ad campaigns and
characters as deep as the bottom of Don Draper’s
glass of whisky. Later that day lauded director Ursula Meier, known for her films Home and Sister, joins
Talents to grant further insights into working with
professional and nonprofessional actors of all ages.
Acclaimed DoP Peter Zeitlinger (Queen of the Desert) sheds light on his multiple collaborations with
directors including Werner Herzog and Ulrich Seidl.
Discussions on hybrid narrative spaces are honed
in two cross media panels welcoming back, among
others, Finnish director Timo Vuorensola who talks
about Iron Sky Universe, the latest sequel of the
sci-fi cult hit from Berlinale 2012.
Tuesday, February 10
Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy-winning com
poser Howard Shore (Maps to the Stars, Lord of the
Rings and Hobbit trilogies) will elaborate on how
sound and score shape the visual worlds in which
Berlinale Talents 2015
unforgettable stories unfold. The power of documentary to look back into history’s darkest episodes and create cinematic spaces of personal
remembrance will be discussed by two celebrated
documentary filmmakers, Joshua Oppenheimer
(The Look of Silence) and Marcel Ophüls (The Mem
ory of Justice).
Movie screens open a universe of infinite
dimensions and depths. Filmmakers are
the creators of such spaces.
Wednesday, February 11
Legendary German auteur Wim Wenders (Every
Thing Will Be Fine) takes the stage in a joint event
with the Deutsche Kinemathek to recount his illu
strious career. How guerrilla filmmaking, armed
with the weapons of humor, can document the
hacking of both public and private spaces with
political aims will be discussed by director Laura
Nix (The Yes Men Are Revolting) and the activist duo
The Yes Men. Film choreographer Francesca Jaynes
and puppeteer Mikey Brett, both having worked
with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, will tackle how actors create
movement in spaces beyond all limits.
Thursday, February 12
On the final day of Berlinale Talents, in a discussion
about films crossing borders, esteemed South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho (Snowpiercer) follows
films from their local birthplaces to international
audiences. As We Were Dreaming director Andreas
Dresen, screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhaase as well
as bestselling author Clemens Meyer explore the
short period when space seemed unlimited, 25
years ago in eastern Germany and in their latest
film to be discovered in the festival.

Berlinale Talents is for many filmmakers the lusty first date that
blooms into a long-term and deepening relationship with the Berlina
le. Hailing this year from 75 countries, Talents continually bring their
fresh homegrown visions and singular stories back to Berlin’s audi
ences. Many discover their future filmmaking partners at Berlinale
Talents and return to the festival in tag-team fashion, with multiple
alumni attached to a single film. In this 65th edition of the festival,
86 Berlinale Talents alumni with 62 films return in major creative roles
on films that are screening in the official programme of the various
festival sections. Go team Talents!

No matter how many experiences you have in the
film business or how many movies you have seen
in your life, there is definitely space for more. Berlinale jury president Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Black Swan,
Noah) and jury member and winner of a Golden
Bear Claudia Llosa (Madeinusa, La teta asustada,
Aloft) will take the stage to kick off the multi-dimensional discovery trip coming up this week at Berlinale Talents, as well as discuss how they have sculpted space in their own highly acclaimed films.

In cooperation with Berlinale NATIVe
and Berlinale Forum.
One of several films screening in Berlinale Forum
and made by Talent alumni, Mar is directed, pro
duced and written by Dominga Sotomayor (Berlinale Talents 2009), in collaboration with writer/ pro
ducer/actor Lisandro Rodríguez (2014), writer Manu
ela Martelli (2005) and editor Catalina Marín Duarte
(2013). On Sunday, Sotomayor and former Editing
Studio participant Duarte will also join the Studio

These are the world’s promising untold stories waiting to be narrated. ”World Building“ designates an
iterative and collaborative narrative practice in
which the design of a world precedes the telling

and Robert Bosch Stiftung.
The past decade has witnessed a boom in film
making in the Arab world, which has in turn seen a
marked return to the local art house cinema as a
space of viewership, meeting and cultural exchange
for local audiences. Noted distributors and exhibitors from Beirut, Cairo and Berlin will explore not
only how local cinemas are reemerging as bustling
hubs of alternative culture, but it also will examine
difficulties faced by distributors and filmmakers as
they try to transfer Arab culture to spaces outside
of the Arab world.

Susan Korda.
“Good editing is like good sex,” exclaims noted editor and director Susan Korda (One of Us), and in this
master class she proves just how. Through selected
clips from Bonnie & Clyde, Jaws, Se7en, Alien 3 and
For All Mankind, Korda demonstrates the multi
faceted techniques used to merge sound, image
and timing to bring about the intended cinematic
experience. She‘ll lay bare the secrets of the editing
room and the editor’s tricks to make a film work. To
“kill your darlings,” or the critical ability to surrender
preconceived notions and petty preferences and
select the material that best allows your story to
unfold, is a primary focus of the session.
Walter Salles, Sebastian Schipper.
In cooperation with Berlinale Panorama.
”You simply cannot anticipate what you will find
on the road,“ says Walter Salles in his ’Notes for a
Theory of the Road Movie.‘ This panel brings together two filmmakers whose literally ”moving“ films
can exemplify the best of what cinema can offer.
Salles (On the Road), widely known for sending his
characters off to discover their inner selves on long
and winding trips, meets up with German director
Sebastian Schipper. Schipper’s film Victoria is an
exceptional entry in the official Berlinale Compe
tition, as the movie sticks hard on the heels of

intimate session, Ciupek will focus on the changing
role of digital image technicians as digital workflows
evolve to create new responsibilities both in preproduction and on set. Other topics will include the
technical challenges of camera and lens choice, quality control and look creation, the grading of rushes
and the calibration of displays.

Documentaries are becoming increasingly popular
and are reaching wider audiences via new online
platforms and in the cinema. Along with the new
diversity of platforms, we are witnessing the emergence of hybrid formats that not only borrow from
fiction but also from journalism. This panel brings
together three Berlinale Talents alumni, noted Nigerian film critic and journalist Shaibu Husseini,
Japanese filmmaker Atsushi Funahashi (Nuclear
Nation II) and Marcelo Martinessi from Paraguay
(Man of the North) to consider their approaches to
create stories both for the news and documentary
work. Questions of access to knowledge, freedom
of speech and press and the tricky issue of truth will
be tackled from their different perspectives.
Sean Coleman, Liz Rosenthal.
In cooperation with Medienboard BerlinBrandenburg.
Interactive storytelling experiences and games are
often considered as secondary in the development
of traditional media products, as part of marketing
not part of the core story. Liz Rosenthal, CEO and
founder of Power to the Pixel, and writer and producer Sean Coleman (Netwars) will explore how
cross media approaches and new forms of interactive media can be used more efficiently to incubate
new stories and projects for today’s connected
audiences. Whether for a feature film, a TV series or
a new media project, a strategic cross-platform approach to story development and rapid prototyping of your idea will help develop your project and
audience simultaneously.

the expressions of remembrance, performance and
memory in their films. The two acclaimed documentarians will address the search for truth in the

how they create and preserve cinematic spaces in
their films that ensure dignity and respect for the
protagonists and their often traumatic experiences.
Ursula Meier. In cooperation with

Children don’t play by the logics and rules of the

young protagonists in film requires directorial skill.

Embodying Architecture in Film

Joanna Hogg, Matthias Sauerbruch.
In the films of Joanna Hogg, relationships and
family structures play out in and are heavily influenced by architectural spaces and landscapes.
Berlin-based architect Matthias Sauerbruch (Sauerbruch & Hutton) worked on the iconic house in
which Hogg’s latest drama, Exhibition, unravels.
Showing excerpts from the film, Hogg and Sauerbruch explore the dialogue between film and
architecture and how living spaces can influence
human behavior or even become a character in a
film. Other topics to be tackled include stylistic de
vices when shooting and editing interiors, bringing
space into the foreground of narration and how
spatial understandings of architecture can be translated into spatial representation in film.

experts. Along the long road ”from idea to the

their projects for the better? And how do they
choose the project they want to develop and why?
With regard to an ever-changing industry landscape, how do the responsibilities of producer and

Innovative forms, fresh perspectives and local stories from across the globe are supported by the

one of many successful films supported by the
World Cinema Fund. Isona Admetlla and Vincenzo
Bugno discuss the aims of the initiative, the breadth
of works and regions considered and how filmmakers can apply with their projects.
Bong Joon-Ho, Lorna Tee.
Film is truly a universal language and medium,
but that is not to say that there are not daunting
obstacles to overcome when bringing films from
their local birthplaces to international audiences.
The films of a specific region often convey elements
of the local or regional context: its cultural heritage,
its social and political preoccupations, its genres
and traditions and its ways of communicating and
telling stories. Bong Joon-Ho, South Korean director of The Host and celebrated lately for his first
English language film Snowpiercer, and renowned
Asian producer Lorna Tee (Postcards from the Zoo)
bring their rich experiences in making films that are
successful for both local and international markets
to this discussion. When developing stories intended to cross the cultural divide, what must be considered at the script level, when choosing production partners, cast and crew and when designing a
distribution and marketing strategy?

The collapse of the Berlin Wall and the GDR was followed by a brief moment in time in eastern Germany
where space seemed unlimited and freedom was
an ideal to be tested and lived to the fullest. These
feelings form the background for As We Were Dream
ing, the Berlinale Competition entry directed by
Andreas Dresen and adapted for the screen by Wolf
gang Kohlhaase from the bestselling novel by Clemens Meyer. Representing three generations that
personally experienced this electric time in the East,
Dresen, Kohlhaase and Meyer will describe their
process of adapting from memory to novel to screen
a very loaded historical moment that lingers in the
space of imagination of many Germans.

Berlinale Talents 2015
Experiencing the writers‘ room Europe’s first postgraduate TV serial writing and
production programme
SERIAL EYES programme offers young EU scriptwriters and producers a fast
track into the dynamic world of TV serial drama. The full-time eight-month
course starting in September 2015 provides intensive training in both writing
and production with a specific focus on European markets.
