Corporate Partnerships O T U O Y E T I WE INV E G N A H C THE E M A G H T U O Y E M O FOR LOW-INC Prologue The San Francisco Bay Area has a growing academic achievement gap and health disparity that disproportionately impacts low-income youth, resulting in thousands of children unprepared for academic success and at risk for obesity. America SCORES, a national non-profit organization with a strong Table of Contents local presence is using the power of soccer, creative expression, and community service to provide innovative solutions to these preventable problems. America SCORES Bay Area works six days a week with over one thousand first through eighth graders in 20 schools in the Bay Area. The Achievement Gap & Health Crisis We take fun seriously. Our impact is documented in studies by the White House, UCSF (University of California San Francisco), and other third-party evaluators. Our approach is tailored to meet the needs of community partners and stakeholder objectives. We have many ways to engage volunteers and deliver meaningful partnerships. With your help, we can do more. 8 Our Vision 10 America SCORES in San Francisco 14 Soccer. Poetry. America SCORES Chapter 2: Our Vision is a 501c3 non-profit organization that delivers powerful and playful sports and language enrichment activities for students in grades K-8. America SCORES Bay Area runs programming in San Francisco, the East Bay, and is part of a national network with affiliates in 13 cities across the country. With help of our partners, we help children discover the benefits of working together as a team, the joy of physical activity, and the fun in reading and writing. America SCORES has a vision for a better San Francisco in which all children, despite their economic situation, can read and write, play on a sports team, and effect change in their communities. America SCORES is helping San Francisco youth bridge the achievement gap as a team, connecting to each other and contributing to a better quality of life in their communities. SOCCER We form soccer teams and give children a jersey, a ball, and a chance to play on their school team. We create a sense of belonging, sportsmanship, teamwork, and provide the opportunity for children to be physically active every day. LITERACY Twice weekly, teams participate in writing workshops guided by their writing coaches. These serve to accelerate literacy skills development, help students to become authors of their own poems and stories, and make reading and writing as fun as playing soccer. COMMUNITY We build community by bringing all of the teams and their families together for weekly games, poetry slams, and book swaps. These events celebrate achievements and build bridges of understanding that cross racial, ethnic, and linguistic grounds. THE RESULT As a result of America SCORES, students are stronger, smarter, and kinder. They achieve more for themselves, and along the way, they help others in need. 11 “The program uses soccer as a method to provide students, ages 8 to 13, 10 times more physical exercise than the national average for their age, improve literacy skills, increase school participation, and spark community engagement by encouraging kids to use teamwork learned on the field to support each other off of it.” - John Harkes American Soccer Beyond the World Cup July 26, 2010 79% of America SCORES students qualify for Free or Reduced Price Lunch (FRPL) America SCORES School Site Chapter 3: America SCORES in San Francisco Potential New School Sites (≥50% of students qualify for FRPL) Other School Sites (<50% of students qualify for FRPL) % of students that qualify for FRPL The Free or Reduced Price Lunch (FRPL) program in schools is a strong indicator of economic need and the achievement gap. There are 15,000 total students who qualify for FRPL in San Francisco and America SCORES Bay Area currently works with 3,000 of them. Our goal is to serve schools where more than 50% of students qualify for FRPL, thus reaching 9,000 San Francisco youth and expanding our impact to the North Beach Russian Hill communities with the greatest need. Nob Hill Downtown Western Addition Richmond District Financial District Haight Mission District Castro Sunset District Portrero Hill Noe Valley Bernal Heights Twin Peaks Hunter’s Point Ingleside Excelsior FRPL is a program of the US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition program that provides “Free or Reduced Price Lunch” to families who fall below certain income benchmarks. For a family of four, for example, you are eligible for reduced price lunch if your income is below $41,438 per year and free lunch if your income is below $29,055. Federal guidelines for poverty for a family of four is $22,055 or less in annual income. 15 “I was a student at an inner-city school when I was a young kid and I know how important those early influences and opportunities are...The thing about America SCORES that is so wonderful is that it fosters both a team spirit and an individual voice plus a voice that speaks about the community.” - Amy Tan Author of the Joy Luck Club and many others “Participants in America SCORES increased their coordination, improved their fitness, and demonstrated impressive decreases in the prevalence of overweight. This type of program is incredibly important for a number of reasons. First, America SCORES aims to promote fitness and, regardless of a person’s weight, fitness predicts health outcomes such as diabetes, stroke, and even death. Second, America SCORES significantly improved aerobic capacity in these children by 21 percent; even small improvements in fitness lead to better health outcomes. Lastly, participation in America SCORES was associated with a reduction in the prevalence of obesity. This is very impressive given that the prevalence of overweight has been increasing (in California, the percent of children at risk or overweight has increased annually of late). We need more programs like this.” Kristine Madsen, MD, MPH Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics Chapter 4: University of California, San Francisco Soccer. Poetry. Hope. Findings from Quality Transformation Team Directed by Rex Greene PhD “Evaluation results from 2011 provide evidence that participants achieved positive outcomes in the areas of language arts, physical fitness, self confidence, and that for $225 per season, 68.5 hours of service per program participant can be provided that will result in participants improving on 8 out of 10 targeted changes in their behavior and attitudes.” Example findings for improvements in language arts and connection to school: • 85% of children say that America SCORES makes them enjoy going to school more • 77% of children say that America SCORES makes them enjoy reading and writing more • 77% of parents say that because of America SCORES, their child does his/her homework better • 64% of parents say that because of America SCORES, their child enjoys reading and writing more 19 “America SCORES participants had an increased level of physical activity, increased reporting of feelings of selfconfidence, self-efficacy, and enjoyment in learning, increased reporting of reading enjoyment and longer time reading independently, and gains in writing achievement.” - White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President Solving the Problem of Childhood Obesity Within A Generation May 2010 “America SCORES has changed my son’s life by making him more confident in himself and a great sportsman. I say this because Selascie used to get upset every time he lost at any game. Now he understands that it is not if you win or lose, but how you play the game, and have fun while you are doing it.” - Karen Perkins America SCORES Bay Area Parent Corporate TM Chapter 5: Our Partners Donations over $5k received from March 1, 2011 - September 1, 2012. My name is special to me because a long stream involves water and water flows like life flows. Time goes by fast and I don’t intend on wasting it. I believe that I can make a difference. - Riley D., age 10 5th grade, Sunnyside Elementary Riley reluctantly joined an America SCORES team in September of 2011. A few years ago, Riley was abandoned by her mother who suffered from drug addiction. A year later, Riley was able to build a relationship with her father’s new partner. But tragedy struck twice. This woman passed away shortly after. At school, Riley would not speak to anyone. She refused to engage in activities with her classmates. She withdrew socially, emotionally, and academically. When Riley became part of the America SCORES team, however, everything started to change. She had friends and people who cared. “Riley has had a remarkable transformation...and is a completely different person because of America SCORES”, according to the Sunnyside after-school coordinator. After seeing the impact our program had on Riley, the coordinator is determined to do “whatever it takes” to keep America SCORES at her school. Poet-Athlete Profile Diego and the Mayor In March, when Diego, a 4th grader at Junipero Serra Elementary, raised his hand to suggest an idea for his team’s service-learning project, he didn’t know that very same hand would soon be shaking that of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. For their service-learning project, Diego’s team decided to collaborate with Street Soccer San Francisco, a homeless soccer team that aims to rehabilitate homeless through the power of soccer. They invited the Street Soccer team to their school as an opportunity to play soccer, listen to stories, and learn the importance of setting goals. In honor of their work with Street Soccer, Diego was chosen to represent his America SCORES team and receive the Mayor’s Award for Civic Engagement from San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. Diego waited on the steps with his coach by his side as the Mayor spoke to all the students, telling them that their love for their community was inspiring. After receiving the award, Diego said, “I felt nervous and happy at the same time. I am really proud of how hard we prepared.”
