2010 Annual Report
America SCORES 4
Letter From the Board Chair
Evolution and Growth
America SCORES continues to be an innovative and transformational
organization that improves the lives of thousands of youth across the
United States. Our staff and volunteers are a passionate group of
individuals who dedicate significant time to the program to ensure a
successful outcome.
The impact America SCORES programming has on our students is
measurable and lasting. As we continue to serve these children
it is imperative that we focus on sustainability and growth for our
organization.
We have begun to develop a core team in the national office to help
guide America SCORES into the future. With a unifying mission and
vision, combined with a successful and comprehensive program model,
America SCORES is poised for prosperity and expansion to extend our
reach to address the many needs of America’s underserved youth.
I am extremely proud of our team and excited about this stage of
America SCORES’ growth. America SCORES is well on the way to fulfilling
our mission of inspiring urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged
students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference
in the world.
Best Regards,
Ben Chrnelich
National Board Chair
America SCORES
2
Three Step Approach to Youth Development
1 We create teams through the sport of
soccer.
2 We bring these teams into the classroom
to discover their voice through poetry.
3 As a team, the poet-athletes learn to
use their voices to make change in their
communities.
The result is a team of children
who have experienced success
on the field, in the classroom and
in the community.

Profiles: Alumni
Kaylen Hardy
Leasly Salazar
America SCORES New York
Alumnus
America SCORES LA
Alumna
Never having read or written poetry or played
soccer, Kaylen Hardy joined the America
SCORES program at the age of 10. Through
his participation in the America SCORES New
York program, Kaylen learned how to be a
leader and learned the value of putting team
goals ahead of individual accomplishments.
Kaylen hopes to one day be involved in law
enforcement or business and feels that the skills
he has learned through the America SCORES
program will allow him to succeed in any team
environment. Currently, Kaylen is a top-player
for Manhattan SC-Paris St. Germain 95B premier
team - ranked first in the state of New York and
one of the top 50 teams in the country.
In her own words, Leasly Salazar was
“a shy, introverted little fourth grader” at
Palms Elementary School when she first joined
the America SCORES LA program. Longing
to find a way to join a soccer team as well
as expand her writing, America SCORES
was a natural fit for Leasly. Although soccer
remains a part of her life, it was a passion
for writing that was sparked in her time with
the program. She started writing creative
and quirky poems and short stories, some
based on family and friends, some on books
she read and movies she watched. After
transferring schools for 10th grade, she
entered a poem for the school’s annual Poet
Laureate competition and won Honorable
Mention. In her junior year of high
school, she wrote a rap in Spanish and won
Poet Laureate in Modern/Classical Language.
This year, she wrote another poem in Spanish
and won 2nd place in the Modern/Classical
Language category of the same competition.
Leasly still returns to the America SCORES LA
program whenever she can to help out. She is
currently attending Duke University and is set
to graduate in 2015.

Profiles: Focus on Leadership
John Maconga
David Chang
Executive Director
Board Chair
America SCORES New England
V.P./Portfolio Manager,
Wellington Management
America SCORES New England
Caryl Lattof
Deputy Director
America SCORES New England
America SCORES New England’s staff is led by
Executive Director John Maconga, who joined
the organization in September 2010 and Deputy
Director Caryl Lattof, who has led the organization’s
development efforts for the past 6 years. John is an
attorney who transitioned to non-profit management
eight years ago.
Caryl is a former financial controller, now focused on
non-profit development and management, including
service as de facto Interim Executive Director during
the ’09-’10 fiscal year.
“Key to weathering the economic downturn was
to stay the course. Today we provide both a
prolific learning environment for America SCORES
kids and a strong, sustainable organization in our
community.”
– Caryl Lattof
Together, John & Caryl lead a talented program
and development staff to provide America SCORES
programming to over 600 urban students each
season in collaboration with 21 Boston Public
Schools. While Caryl leads most development
efforts and high level community and development
outreach, John focuses on unifying the strategic
direction of the organization, stewarding Board
leadership, major donors and high level program
oversight.
Both share a passion for improving the lives of
urban youth. They are particularly excited about the
successful transition to middle school programming,
now in 10 Boston Public School serving over 300
students, and its new Alumni Leadership Academy
program which was piloted in 2009 to keep
America SCORES in the lives of students beyond the
8th grade.
“It’s inspiring to see kids make the transition from
well-meaning soccer enthusiasts to well-rounded
young adults embracing healthy living, lifelong
learning and leadership.” - John Maconga
As an avid soccer player, David Chang was
introduced to the organization through the 2005
Boston America SCORES Cup, an annual charity
soccer tournament that brings together teams
from Boston’s corporations. Soon afterwards, David
became involved in the planning of the event
and quickly became the Chair of the SCORES Cup
Committee.
Under his leadership, the Boston America SCORES
Cup has grown into a 28 team tournament played at
Gillette Stadium and has become America SCORES
Boston’s most successful fundraiser. David has also
been instrumental in launching the inaugural Winter
Challenge fundraising tournament, which provides
another great opportunity for local companies and
soccer enthusiasts to support America SCORES.
David was elected as an At-Large Board Member
in 2007 and Board Chair in 2010. David remains
focused on the ultimate goal of the America
SCORES program: to help youth gain access to
activities which teach them the values of teamwork,
leadership, and commitment. In fact, David was
initially drawn to America SCORES after experiencing
the power of the program:
“When I met two kids from America SCORES New
England, their passion for soccer and their
excitement around delivering a poem they had
written were my inspiration to become more
involved with the organization.”
Together with John and Caryl, David has led the
Board’s strategic planning efforts. The resulting
strategic plan creates new opportunities for
engaging the community and supporters in the
work of the organization and diversifying revenues.
These efforts include the creation of advisory boards
in soccer, poetry and service-learning, volunteer
and governance opportunities and an emphasis on
attracting major donors.

National Poetry SLAM! Poem
My Community
by Zaccheus Harrison, America SCORES Atlanta
My community is nice.
It feels like I am skating on ice.
I like the view. The sky is so blue.
What is up with your mood?
It’s my community, mine just mine,
and I can make it shine!
The sound of my happy community
makes me want to dance.
I know they say poems don’t have to rhyme but
I just like my poems to shine like the sun!
They give me the experience that I need in my life.
For that I call America SCORES super duper nice.
America SCORES is a part of me and
I am a part of America SCORES.
And that’s what makes my community shine.
IT’S MINE, JUST MINE, AND I CAN MAKE IT SHINE!
