JAPAN
JETS BREAKTHROUGH
When Japan’s major shipbuilder
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
Ltd decided to standardize on
vacuum toilet systems for its
newbuildings, it investigated
alternative suppliers.
MHI has three yards in Japan:
Nagasaki, Shimonoseki and Kobe.
– Nagasaki is the flagship yard, building
large vessels including naval and cruise ships.
– Shimonoseki builds medium-sized vessels:
bulkers, passenger ships and ferries.
– Kobe builds container vessels and submarines.
In 2002, the purchasing department at MHI’s head
office in Tokyo asked Jets to present its solutions at
each of the three yards. Represented by its agent in
Kobe, Novenco Nippon Ltd., Jets received the first
order from MHI: toilet systems for a dredger for the
Suez Canal Agency in Egypt, built at the Kobe yard.
This was an important achievement for Jets.
MOL (Mitsui OSK Lines), which operates a fleet
including container ships, tankers and specialized
carriers, chose Jets toilet systems for its new
VLCC, built in Nagasaki, and PCTC, built in Kobe.
Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) operates one of the world’s
largest tanker fleets. Jets supplied a 30MB-D vacuum
unit and 33 toilets for MOL’s VLCC of 300,000 TDW,
which is being built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

CATAMARAN
FERRY RETROFIT
M/S HJØRUNGAVÅG – elegant catamaran for 300 passengers,
built in aluminium by Fjellstrand in 1998. The “Hjørungavåg”,
with a cruising speed of 34 knots, sails the
Hareid - Ålesund ferry route.
Length: 35m. BT: 454. NT: 152.

Fjord1 Møre og Romsdal Fylkesbåter, Molde, Norway. One of Norway’s largest
ferry lines with about 50 ferries for crossing the fjords. Each ferry carries
from 18 to 150 cars and 150 to 500 passengers.
Arve Aksnessæther – the Technical Manager responsible for all three high-speed
catamarans and seven ferries – describes the project:
BACKGROUND
New legislation in Norway states that sewage may not be discharged less than
300 m from land. This meant that about 25 ferries and high-speed catamarans
had to have new toilet systems installed.
WE CHOSE JETS
We already had two vacuum systems from another supplier, but Jets offered
the most suitable technology at a competitive price.
We also appreciated their close cooperation with us in the project.
PLANNING
Customized solution for each ferry. The planning process was highly demanding
because of the limited space on the ferries.
Four yards worked on the project as part of the regular annual maintenance.
IMPLEMENTATION
The entire toilet system, including all the plumbing and tanks, had to be replaced.
MRF and Jets worked together from start to finish. The team at Jets was very
flexible and did an excellent job. The project was completed on time and on budget.
NORWAY
FERRYCAT 120
In 2003, Fjellstrand introduced
the FerryCat 120: a double-ended
catamaran ferry for 120 cars and
400 passengers. Four rotatable
thrusters, one at each end of each
hull, and a 180-degree rotatable
wheelhouse ensure manoeuvrability, safety and redundancy.
In many cases, one Ferrycat can
replace two traditional ferries.
The speed is 22 knots (41 km/h).

Almost three quarters of Norway’s land is unproductive –
but it has some of the world’s richest fishing grounds.
After oil, seafood is the country’s second largest export.
Globally, Norway is the third largest oil exporter. Today it takes only
three days to produce as much oil as was produced in all of 1971,
when production in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea began.

Rolls-Royce
Thanks to Ulstein’s success, it became a sought-after group which Vickers acquired
for USD 500 million in 1998. Shortly afterwards Rolls-Royce bought Vickers and
adopted UT (short for Ulstein Trading) as a Rolls-Royce brand. The commercial marine
business of Rolls-Royce represents one of the world’s leading centres of expertise in
the sector. With a turnover of several billion Norwegian kroner, this prestigious
operation is now headquartered in Ulsteinvik. The father of the UT design is Sigmund
Borgundvåg, who still heads the research and development of new offshore vessels
today. He grew up on these shores, and is a well-known figure in the community.
SIGMUND BORGUNDVÅG, THE FATHER OF THE UT DESIGN:
“We developed the first UT design more than three
decades ago. The oil companies welcomed the UT 704
and 705 as new solutions with qualities that the North
Sea demanded. A higher freeboard to protect the decks
from turbulent waters. Better loading capacity.
Better seakeeping. Greater safety.
shipowners. We have designed and equipped more than 480 UT-700 ships since
the mid-1970s, including more than 50 UT 700 ships under construction at yards
today. These service and support vessels have been a commercial success for their
owners, and their high second-hand values show how durable and robust they are.
The UT design is keeping up with this fast-changing sector. “Island Frontier” is the
first example of a new Rolls-Royce design, and the first vessel to meet the new
Det norske Veritas “Ship Shaped Well Intervention Unit” rules. The 106m UT737L
is designed to meet new requirements for operations such as well intervention
that until now have mainly been carried out from rigs or platforms.
JETS manufacture competitive products and solutions. With a good dialogue any
challenge is easier to sort out, and that saves time and money. Yes, we almost always
include Jets in our spec. Jets delivers the qualities that keep our customers happy”.
“ISLAND FRONTIER”
We designed the ships with construction efficiency and
intelligent integration in mind. We worked together
with local suppliers of deck machinery, propulsion
systems, thrusters, compressors and engines.

ULSTEIN AND JETS
Ulstein Group
In 1917, Martin Ulstein opened a yard to repair fishing boats for local owners.
A former fisherman, he was on the same wavelength as his customers from the start.
When oil production began in Norway, the company applied its expertise to the offshore sector, with such success that it had to contract work to other yards in the region.
This created opportunities for these firms to develop their own specialities.
Idar Ulstein, Martin’s youngest son, became managing director of the company in 1971.
Ulstein grew into a maritime leader with operations in 17 countries. In 1999 the
former Ulstein Group was sold to Vickers, now Rolls-Royce. But the Ulstein family
kept the shipbuilding business.
The new Ulstein Group lives on as a trendsetter within highly sophisticated offshore
vessels, with Idar’s daughter Gunvor and son Tore at the helm.
“Throughout its nearly 90 years, Ulstein has been nourished by
the loyalty of its community. Side by side, managers and
employees search for quality solutions. Ulstein has grown from
the maritime innovation zone of Western Norway.
Its own success has strengthened other maritime companies in
the region – including Jets, where Ulstein was a development
partner. Today Jets returns the favour by offering its expertise
in marine sanitation to Ulstein”
says Tore Ulstein, Man. Director of Ulstein Verft AS.

BREAKTHROUGH WITH MODULAR DESIGN
“We have started selling ship designs for building outside the Group.
And we are very excited about our breakthrough with modular design
using a global network of suppliers. This is a completely new approach
to shipbuilding which saves costs by reusing both knowledge and
modules.” says Gunvor Ulstein, CEO of the Ulstein Group.

Marin Teknikk
The ship design and engineering company Marin Teknikk AS is located in Herøy,
Norway’s largest fishing and offshore municipality. Like the generations
before them, this team has breathed ships and shipbuilding since childhood.
Marin Teknikk designs ships for the demanding offshore sector. Supply vessels.
Pipe layers. Cable layers. Diving vessels. Seismic ships. Tugs.
More and more of these perform complex subsea activities at great depths.
SVEIN-RUNE GJERDE, MAN. DIRECTOR OF MARIN TEKNIKK:
“Ships and the sea have always been my passion.
As a boy, I used to watch ships take shape at the local
shipyard. I spent time at sea before becoming a part
of the technical management there. My father,
Edvard M. Gjerde and myself, founded Marin Teknikk in
1981. The most important asset of our naval architects
and engineers is our know-how.
And knowledge multiplies when you share it.
One example is frequency control. An article about
operating trains inspired me to apply this principle to
ships. Local shipowner Ståle Remøy was convinced by
20
the idea. In 1994 he ordered the “Skandi Marstein”, a multipurpose field supply
vessel and pipe carrier based on MT’s design. Brattvaag built the ship in 1996.
District Offshore AS bought the “Skandi Marstein” while she was still under
construction. She sailed in a pool with three other ships for Shell UK. After a year’s
operation the oil company found that the “Skandi Marstein” used 28% less fuel
than the other ships in the pool - and 35 % less when her payload was taken into
account.
This maritime community is a fertile environment for growing ideas. We draw on
our collective experience and resources to make every design even better than
the last one, to improve seakeeping, safety, stability, efficiency, and
environmental performance”.
THE JETS
MISSION:
AN IDEA
A DESK
A PLACE
A COMMUNITY
“When Olav Hofseth started on his mission to develop a better
vacuum toilet, Marin Teknikk offered him a desk at our offices.
He became a part of this maritime community. In 1986 MT
strengthened our support to the project by becoming a
minority owner of Jets. We still have a significant holding,
and it has paid off handsomely.
Vacuum toilets reduce the accommodation height. So we can optimize the design,
which cuts investment and running costs. Jets has revitalized the market for
marine vacuum toilets, resulting in more competitive solutions.
With Jets reliability, operational stability and open communication, shipowners
and yards are more than satisfied”.
