Spring Commencement Exercises May 16, 2009 Ua Ao Hawai‘i Words by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka lani The announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens, He wekeweke i ka pö pilipuka It is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day, He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikina It is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east. Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapa Streaks of red stain long cloud formations, La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani lä Reposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens; ‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ë I turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day, ‘Ae, ua ao ë. Yes, day has arrived. Hö mai lä kö mälamalama Bestow upon us your radiant light I ka honua nei i ka mauli ola Here upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life. Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino nei Hawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka lä From its boundaries from the east to the west. Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomano It wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge, Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo mai Of deep insight from the depths of antiquity. ‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülama My sole duty is to embrace and to cherish, A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë. So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment. ‘Ae, ua ao ë. Yes, day has arrived. He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao. This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day. Keynote Address Jerry Yang Chief Yahoo and co-founder, Yahoo! Jerry Yang, a Taiwanese native raised in San Jose, California, co-created the Yahoo! Internet navigational guide in April 1994 with David Filo and co-founded Yahoo! Inc. in April 1995. He served as chief executive officer of the company from June 2007 to January 2009. Mr. Yang, a leading force in the Internet media industry, has been instrumental in building Yahoo! into the world's most highly trafficked Web site and one of the world's most recognized brands. Since the company's founding, Mr. Yang has been a key member of the executive management team. His focus at Yahoo! over the years has included corporate strategy, Yahoo!'s technology vision, strategic business partnerships and international joint ventures, and recruiting key talent. In addition to serving on the Yahoo! Board of Directors, Mr. Yang currently serves on the board of directors of Cisco Systems, Yahoo! Japan, and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., and is also on the Stanford University Board of Trustees. Mr. Yang holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University and is currently on a leave of absence from Stanford's electrical engineering Ph.D. program. Student Address Patricia Michaels-Hausman-Walter Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and anthropology Patricia Michaels-Hausman-Walter, who will earn Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and anthropology, along with a certificate in women’s studies, will serve as the student speaker as she challenges the graduating class to use the power of their education to change the world. A non-traditional student, Walters’ success at UH Hilo is the latest chapter in an inspiring story of triumph over adversity starting with her enrollment in UH Hilo in 2003, 12 years after suffering a traumatic brain injury. The accident initially left her in a vegetative state. After months of rehabilitation, Walters regained her ability to communicate and, though, she still faces long-term learning disabilities, she has managed to overcome challenges through hard work, determination and spiritual strength. Active in campus affairs, Walters served two years as president of the UH Hilo Chapter of PSI-CHI National Honor Society for Psychology and has held numerous offices with the Psychology Club. She also served as president of Freedom Equality Movement and is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. Walters plans to return to continue her graduate education in psychology and hopes to eventually open a wellness center for women who have suffered similar traumatic injuries. Alumni Message Dear Graduates, On behalf of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association, I want to congratulate you on your fine academic achievements. Today we commemorate your time here at UH Hilo, and you will undoubtedly reflect on the many memories you have created here. I urge you to take pride in recognizing the diverse talents of your fellow schoolmates, and give them your congratulations as well. Today we are all faced with a challenging economic environment. A shaky financial and labor market awaits you. However, armed with your degree and a positive attitude, you will be wellequipped to succeed in your chosen career. You have taken the necessary step: earning a college degree to enable this reality. I encourage each of you to stay connected to your alma mater. The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association provides opportunities for alumni in the local community to come together for social and intellectual enrichment. We rely on the collective strengths and capabilities of our members to create a strong, perpetual bond between former students and the University. It is this “UH Hilo ‘Ohana” that wishes you, the Spring 2009 Graduating Class of the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, the very best in all your future endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS and ALL THE BEST! Sincerely, Kapena Lum Financial Advisor, American Savings Bank President, UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association UH Hilo, BBA 2002 A Message from the Student Association President If I sit still, then I will root. If I reach, then I will hold. If I let go, then I will fall If I fall, then I will fail. If I fail, then I will change If I change, then I will grow If I grow, then I will have pain. If I hurt, then I will feel uncomfortable If I feel uncomfortable, then I will seek comfort If I find comfort, then I will sit still And If I sit still, then I will root. Life is all a dance between perspective and relationship. It is important to understand perspective in order to create and maintain positive relations with other humans and our environment. We have inherited a world in transition. I believe it is our responsibility and opportunity to redirect the focus of living to the foundations of existence, which seeks balance through perspective and relationships. Rock-it Red Vulcans! The Star-Spangled Banner Poem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Hawai‘i Pono‘i Music by Henri Berger Hawai‘i pono‘ï Nänä i kou mö‘ï Ka lani ali‘i Ke ali‘i.
