Archaeology Lecture Series
Cork City Library
Organised by Ciara Brett, Niamh Daly & Sylvia Holmes
This free lecture series will provide a chronological history centring on one
aspect of Cork’s Built Heritage: the Fortifications of Cork City and County,
over a series of one-hour lectures held at the Cork City Library from August to
December 2015. Our ancestors have been defending and protecting Cork city
and environs in various forms from the prehistoric hillforts of the Bronze Age up
to the 18th-century star-shaped fortifications. The line-up of speakers includes
researchers from the Department of Archaeology in UCC, the OPW, commercial
archaeologists and local independent scholars who will focus on the historical
and archaeological evidence while also providing an interesting background of the
social history, heritage, and modern-day conservation of these significant sites.
October Tuesday 20 | 7.00p.m.
• Dr Maurice F. Hurley: “The walls of Cork in Medieval times”
• Dr Colin Rynne (UCC): “Elizabeth Fort and the seventeenth-century
defences of Cork”
November Tuesday 17 | 7.00p.m
• Dr Barra Ó Donnabháin (UCC): “Spike Island: the fortress prison”
• Dr Elena O’Brien (Bluebrick Heritage): “The Archaeology of
Camden Fort Meagher”
For future lectures in this series | see corkcitylibraries.ie
Michael Morpurgo
November Tuesday 3 | 6.30 p.m.
Millennium Hall, City Hall, Cork
Age 8 upwards
Michael Morpurgo is one of our best-loved and most talented writers for young
people. His recent novel, Listen to the Moon, has a strong link to Co. Cork as it was
inspired by an account he read of the sinking of the Lusitania off the Old Head of Kinsale
in 1915. Don’t miss this chance to come along and hear him speak about his life and
writing, and what it was about the Lusitania story that struck such a chord.
Michael is perhaps best known for his novel War Horse, which was adapted for stage by
the National Theatre in London and was subsequently staged to great acclaim in cities
across the world from Dublin to New York to Beijing. It has also been adapted for cinema
by Steven Spielberg.
This will be a fascinating talk for all the family from ages 8 up and will include time for
questions. There will be a bookstall on the night. Contact your local library to book your place today!
