Lugdine Park is located on the periphery of Glengarriff Town on the Cork/Kerry border. Glengarriff is world renowned for not only its scenic beauty, but also its rich, vibrant culture. The area caters wonderfully for anyone who values an outdoor lifestyle with vast expanses of some of the most stunning scenery the world over. The quaint town hugs Glengarriff bay, and its sheltered harbour which leads out to the Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal location for boating enthusiasts. Lugdine Park is also nestled against the Glengarriff golf course ensuring easy access for avid golfers eager to spend a day on the green. Lugdine Park is set within approximately 35 acres of splendid pleasure grounds on West Cork’s magical coastline. The estate comprises the main house, a guest cottage, outdoor changing rooms and W.C’s, over 30 ladies walks, a private bathing beach and two islands. Its setting is undeniably one of the most spectacular across all of Ireland. The juxtaposition of the calm waters of Glengarriff bay and the rugged mountain range beyond it result in a vista that one could study for hours on end. ‘Driving through the one road village, I knew right away that it had all the cozy charm we were looking for. We turned down the long avenue and kept driving and driving for what seemed like miles, looking for the house. We still hadn’t seen it when Charlie glimpsed the sea through the trees. His face lit up, and I knew. He said, “Oh this is perfect. It’s perfect! We’re buying it.” Ever sensible, I reminded him, “But, Charlie, we haven’t seen the house yet. How do you know?” He gave me a pilot’s answer. “Oh, it’s a perfect place to land a seaplane,” and so we continued down the road and bought the house at the end of it.’ - Maureen O’Hara The setting of Lugdine Park is undeniably one of the most spectacular across all of Ireland, the juxtaposition of the calm waters of Glengarriff bay and the rugged mountain range beyond it result in a vista that one could study for hours on end. The story of Lugdine Park begins well before its construction with the purchase of part of the Dromgarriff lands in ca. 1915 by William Martin Murphy. William Martin Murphy (1844-1919), born near Castletownbere, Co. Cork, was the most successful Irish businessman of his day. His business endeavours spanned many sectors railway construction to the media, as the owner of the Irish Daily Independent. William Martin Murphy passed on his estate to his son, William Lombard Murphy, and in 1935 Lugdine Park was built. The estate was then passed to Eva Murphy, William’s youngest sister who it seemed lived a life of leisure and appreciated the setting and gardens at Lugdine Park, purchasing acreage around the estate and making improvements to the house in c. 1947. The estate was then passed to Donald Chance, a nephew of Eva and William, who eventually sold to Baron von Dornberg. Baron Alexander Count Dornberg bought Lugdine Park for between £6,000 and £7,000 in c.1957. Alexander Baron von Dornberg (1901-1983), was a diplomat and member of the SS who served as Hitler’s Chief of Protocol from 1938 to 1945. Baron von Dornberg at over 6 foot 9, has the equivocal reputation of being the ‘tallest Nazi’ in the Third Reich. In 1967 Baron von Dornburg sold Lugdine Park to an English couple Mr. and Mrs. Francis Pond. The Ponds occupied Lugdine for approximately three years before selling it in 1970 to the most notable of Lugdine Park’s inhabitants and current owner, silver screen legend Maureen O’Hara. Maureen O’Hara first captured the public’s eye in her breakout role as the dancing gypsy, Esmeralda, in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). She has held the world’s attention ever since. Known for playing feisty heroines, O’Hara’s famously flame-red hair lit up the screen like no other star from Hollywood’s golden age. In a career that has spanned over seventyfive years, she has starred in over sixty motion pictures including such critically acclaimed classics as Miracle on 34th Street (1947), The Quiet Man (1952) and How Green Was My Valley (1941). She is widely recognized as Ireland’s most renowned and celebrated actress. In 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected O’Hara to receive an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her lifetime contribution to film. The Oscar will be presented to Ms. O’Hara at the annual Governors Awards in November 2014. For nearly forty-five years, Lugdine Park has been her beloved, private retreat away from the limelight.
