I managed to get out on a mini pub crawl recently taking in the Spailpin Fanach across from the Beamish Brewery, Cavanaghs and the Vicarstown on North Main Street and the Lions Den on the main Douglas Road, all serving a lovely pint. I popped into the Woodford for a ‘Soup and Half Sandwich’ and it was of the highest quality. Munster versus Clermont in Bob Foxes followed by Dan the Banjo Man was a great buzz for all present. I am looking forward to ‘Live at the Marque’ and am hoping to see Elvis Costello during the series of concerts. Best wishes, John John Mac’s Rugby Angle On the club scene, it was nice to see Cork Con finish the season with a trophy, defeating St. Mary’s in the Bateman Cup Final. Forwards coach Brian Hickey moves on to take up the position of head coach with Cashel RFC with Cobh man Ian Dunne moving in the opposite direction to lead Highfield in Division 2A. Dolphin finished a very credible fifth in 1A and Sundays Well preserved their Senior status getting a bonus point in Ards. The Well have some good players including former C.B.C number 8 James Mulcahy and the return of David Corkery should boost them substantially in Division 2B. Munster played magnificently against Clermont and Rob Penny deserves credit but the team still has work to do to get to the levels of 2006-2008. Concerning the Lions it is possible that up to four Irish players will make the test team. However Simon Zebo and Rory Best must feel aggrieved not to be in the tour party. Music Review Dan Walsh (Dan the Banjo Man) Dan Walsh a Stafford born banjo player with Irish roots in Wexford played the Cricket Club Mardyke, Cork to a large and appreciated crowd of music fans and cricket aficionados. Dan began his set with a series of Scottish and Irish jigs. Dan continued with ‘When a Man is in love’ which had a distinctive English folk feel to it. Dan played the ‘Wise man’ which had a catchy country and western feel. As I listened to the ‘Same but different’ I wondered was Dan talking about Newcastle where he studied for his music degree or his birth place Stafford. I realised it was the latter with the lines ‘A place where I go, an oasis when my world is sinking’. ‘Snow in March’ had a melancholic effect and ‘Leslie’s Cheesecakes’ had an Indian sound which the cricket club audience loved. Dan switches to guitar occasionally to great effect and ‘You can call me Al’ by Paul Simon lifted the mood further. Politically aware ‘more about you criticises the self-righteous with the lines “who do you think you are”. Dan finished the night with some reels (an excerpt from the film Deliverance.) In the end the banjo plucking, foot stomping, table banging, reaches a crescendo as Dan the Banjo man finally finishes to massive applause. What are your memories of your early rugby career? I started rugby in Cork Con, aged ten, coached by Roy McKnight (Sr). Moving to P.B.C. I was part of a group that did not win anything, but I managed to appear in the Senior Cup Final against Crescent in 1983. After leaving school, a Pres connection with Muskerry rugby club resulted in me joining them for one season, the team was largely made up of Gardai and prison officers. I subsequently re-joined Cork Con for under-twenty in a team that included Peter O’Flynn and Peter Wilson in the centre. Sadly, Peter Wilson was killed in a car accident on the way to watch C.B.C. in Limerick. When did you get your first senior break? As a twenty year old, I secured the number 14 jersey in a pre-season competition for senior clubs held in Limerick. Kenny Murphy got selected on the other wing and long serving wingers Ian Kingston and Ian O’Leary gave way. This senior team was incredibly successful and the calibre of my team mates (virtually all internationals) made try scoring easy for me. What were the highlights of your playing career? Winning every senior competition in Munster rugby prior to the A.I.L. was a great experience, however appearing in the Munster junior cup was always special for me. Two junior cup victories, one against Highfield in 1986 were great and playing with outstanding players like Stephen Hayes and Ray Kennedy made it for me. Being left out from the starting XV for the 1989 senior cup final was disappointing but I still managed to get a few minutes at the end against Shannon in that game. I then moved to Waterpark scoring three tries in a Munster Senior league game in Thomond Park. But these points were later deducted from Waterpark due to registration issues. During this period I was part of the Munster squad for four seasons, but unfortunately did not appear in any interprovincial’s. Finally, playing in Twickenham in the Middlesex sevens, tackling the Nigerian Prince Andrew Harriman against Harlequins, in front of a full house, also being mentioned by Bill McLaren on TV was a major highlight for me. Who was your most difficult opponent and who did you enjoy playing with? My most difficult opponent was Pat Murray full back for Shannon, who caused many problems for defences as he entered the line. The players I enjoyed lining out with were Moss Finn, Kenny Smith and John Barry all of whom were quality representative players. Have you been involved in the game since you stopped playing? Unfortunately I have not been involved in the game as I am involved in a large family business. Current hobbies include motor biking and frequent trips to the Beara peninsula.
