PASTORAL CARE Please don’t forget to inform us if you are going to be
hospitalized so one of our priests can visit. Provide us with your name,
hospital, room number, phone number and, when possible, how long you
will be hospitalized. If you are unable to attend Mass, due to poor health,
illness or advanced age, please call so a Eucharistic Minister can bring
Communion to you. Anointing of the Sick may be requested because of
scheduled surgery or treatment for a life-threatening illness. Call us prior
to your surgery or treatment. Anointing of the Sick at Mass may be celebrated before you go into the hospital. Directly inform one of our priests or
call one of our Pastoral Administrators.

Baby Jesus which will adorn your home Nativity Scenes.
We will bless the statues at every Mass
Each home should have a Nativity Scene - no matter how small - to remind everyone what we are

Riflessione del mese di dicembre
LA PECORA NERA ALLA GROTTA DI BETLEMME
C'era una volta una pecora diversa da tutte le altre. Le
pecore, si sa, sono bianche; lei invece era nera, nera
come la pece. Quando passava per i campi tutti la deridevano, perché in un gregge tutto bianco spiccava
come una macchia di inchiostro su un lenzuolo bianco:
«Guarda una pecora nera! Che animale originale; chi
crede mai di essere?».
Anche le compagne pecore le gridavano dietro:
«Pecora sbagliata, non sai che le pecore devono
essere tutte uguali, tutte avvolte di bianca lana?».
La pecora nera non ne poteva più, quelle parole erano
come pietre e non riusciva a digerirle. E così decise di
uscire dal gregge e andarsene sui monti, da sola:
"Almeno là avrebbe potuto brucare in pace e riposarsi
all'ombra dei pini."
Ma nemmeno in montagna trovò pace. «Che vivere è
questo? Sempre da sola!», si diceva dopo che il sole
tramontava e la notte arrivava. Una sera, con la faccia
tutta piena di lacrime, vide lontano una grotta
illuminata da una debole luce. «Dormirò là dentro!» e
si mise a correre.
Correva come se qualcuno la attirasse. «Chi sei?», le
domandò una voce appena fu entrata. «Sono una
pecora che nessuno vuole: una pecora nera! Mi hanno
buttata fuori dal gregge». «La stessa cosa è capitata a
noi! Anche per noi non c'era posto con gli altri
nell'albergo. Abbiamo dovuto ripararci qui, io Giuseppe
e mia moglie Maria.
Proprio qui ci è nato un bel bambino. Eccolo!». La
pecora nera era piena di gioia. Prima di tutte le altre
poteva vedere il piccolo Gesù. «Avrà freddo; lasciate
che mi metta vicino per riscaldarlo!». Maria e
Giuseppe risposero con un sorriso. La pecora si
avvicinò stretta stretta al bambino e lo accarezzò con
la sua lana. Gesù si svegliò e le bisbigliò nell'orecchio:
«Proprio per questo sono venuto: per le pecore
smarrite!».

Sant’Atanasio si terra’ domenica prossima, 15 dicembre alle
4:30 pomeridiane nell’auditorium della nostra scuola. A
questa riunione avremo la visita di Babbo Natale che portera’
i doni ai soci della G.I.S.A. Come sempre la riunione si
concludera’ con caffe’, dolci, panettone e champagne. Sara’

ALBERO DELLE LUCI DI NATALE ACCANTO
ALL’UFFICO PARROCCHIALE – tutti i membri della nostra
parrochhia sono invitati a comprare luci sull’albero delle luci
come regalo particolare per qualche vostro famigliare oppure
in memora di un vostro defunto. L’albero e’ posto sulla
61esima strada, accanto alla statua di San Giuda. Siete
pregati di recarvi all’ufficcio parrochiale.
AVVENTO – Tempo di preparazione per il Santo Natale –
Oggi, domenica 15 dicembre, e’ la terza domenica di
avvento. Prepariamoci alla nascita del Signore.
IL PRESEPE nella chiesa sottopiano e’ aperto– la
tradizione continua come ogni anno da oltre 40 anni. Da
ricordare che il nostro presepe ha avuto molti articoli scritti su
giornali importanti ed e’ stato nominato dalle stazioni
televisive e giornali uno dei presepi piu’ belli della citta’ di
New York.
CALENDARIO MESSE per il 2014 – ci sono ancora Messe
la Domenica alle 6pm senza intenzioni ed ancora Messe alle
7 del mattimo che si oppono offrire ai defunti. Per cortesia
recatevi all’ufficio parrocchiale dalle 4pm poi.

III DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO
Celebra la Iglesia hoy el tercer Domingo de
ento.
Advi-
Jesús se refiere a Juan como uno de los que por fe merecio estar en el reino de los cielpos. Juan no estaba seguro
si era Jesús el Mesías, pero tenía la intuición, ya que le
había sido otorgado el Espiritu Santo quien en su
sabiduría anima a dar la respuesta positive al llamado que
Cristo hace.
“El mas pequeño en el reino de los cielos, es todavia mas
grande que El”
No es una expresión despectiva sino la forma metaforica como Jesús
describe la acción del Espiritu Santo, en lo que llega a convertirnos y la nueva vida
que adquirimos a traves de su poder.
Regocijemonos pues, en la Salvación y sigamos animados, cantemos de Júbilo
para ser coronados de alegría y asi el dia de la venida del Señor esperaremos
con ansia los frutos de la eterna gloria.

NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT: It is with great joy that I present to the parish of St. Athanasius a magnificent gift
worthy of a cathedral with the arrival of our new Christmas choir CD. I have spent a tremendous amount of time preparing this
first rate musical production, over the past three years, for the benefit of this parish and it is my gift to help celebrate the 100
years of worship at St. Athanasius Church. This CD contains a broad spectrum of musical liturgical styles spanning 500 years
worth of beautiful choral meditations on scripture recounting the birth of Jesus. There were a total of nearly 60 choristers involved in the recording process and various instrumentalists to add a special "sparkle" to the live recording heard. I was able
to do this entire work for the cost of a mere $8,000, not the real cost surpassing $50,000 that any producer would be able to
confirm. I was also able to raise more than half of the expenditures for a recording engineer to show up with equipment at the
church, studio mixing, graphics, mechanical licenses and CD manufacturing through the donations of generous private benefactors. My goal is to at least cover the remainder of these expenses and any amount collected through sales of this CD that
goes beyond the $8,000 manufacturing threshold will go directly back to the church for the purpose of buying new choir music,
extra choir robes for our growing group, and guest intsrumentalists. I do not want to make a dime on this project; it is my gift
to the parish of St. Athanasius. Pricing is more than attractive at $10 for each that contains almost 1 1/2 hours of music. These CDs will be for sale in the vestibule over the next few weeks, so please buy many to give out as wonderful Christmas gifts. I have much less time left here than I have already spent in my tenure as Director of Music Ministries over 14 years
and a strong show of appreciation for the dedicated work given by those involved in music-making in our parish would be a
testament to the ongoing power of the divine mystery that can so well be portrayed through the gifted art of liturgical music.

Bensonhurst Cluster Youth Ministry
Youth Center
Every Tuesday Night from 6:30-9:30PM at St. Frances Cabrini (Bay 11th off of 16th Ave and 86th St,
youth from 6th grade and up are welcome through high school/college to participate in various activities
and games, along with community time of life lessons and discussion groups. WE also have a drama
group that meets from time to time to practice and perform skits and short plays during the youth center. The program runs all school year long except on major holiday weeks! $1.00 donation each week.
G-Unit: Youth Group/Faith Formation
Every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the Month, meets at St. Simon and Jude (Avenue T and van Sicklen- 2
blocks from Kings Hwy and McDonald Avenue) in the CHURCH basement, join this group of youth to
interact, build a community that explores, discovers, discusses life, friendship, faith and God. Socialize with peers; make new friends, meets from 7-9PM. New Night and Location.
Youth Center/Open Gym
Every first and third Friday of the month at St. Simon and Jude (Avenue T and van Sicklen- 2 blocks
from Kings Hwy and McDonald Avenue) join us for games, arts and crafts, the game room, board
games, movie nights and more! Each night will have “Community Time” that will include prayer, a lesson taught through a group activity and youth are guided by caring and loving adults, from 7-9PM.
Soul Team- High School/ College Leadership Formation and Training
Meets once a month on first Wednesday of the month at St. Frances Cabrini (Bay 11th, off of 16th Ave
and 86th St). This group plans, evaluates and is formed to play a greater leadership role in all of our
youth ministry programs and on the local level in their community, church or school.
College Youth Group (YAM’s) - Young Adult Ministry
Just starting this group will meet regular in a peer group of college youth only for fellowship, spiritual
development and the chance to explore life and faith through activities and discussions. Meets Thursday evenings
Saturday Youth Program
Youth 4-10 years of age are invited to join us every first and third Saturday of the month from 10:302PM at St. Athanasius in Nazareth Institute- Bay pkwy and 62 nd st.. We have arts and crafts, music, a
light snack, fun and games and faith activities that are age appropriate. We welcome older youth 7th
grade and up to come and help and get community service hours. $5.00 registration, $1 each week.
Special: Project Rachael- Anti- Bullying Campaign to start
Bensonhurst Cluster Youth Ministry
Participate in a weekly youth center at St. Frances Cabrini on Tuesday nights, become a part of a High
School or College age leadership and support group, do community service on Saturday Mornings
helping younger kids at St. Athanasius, or come on a service project. Help confirmation youth to prepare for the sacrament, or get better prepared yourself on Sunday Nights. Go to a youth conference;
make a video for the youth film festival or on an overnight lock in retreat. All of this is possible through
the Bensonhurst Cluster Youth Ministry which assists the above programs here at St. Simon and Jude

The St. A’s Scouting Program meets every Wednesday night in the school auditorium at 7:00 p. m. All
boys ages 7-18. Boys and Girls 14-21 can join the Venturing Crew. Come and learn skills that will last
a lifetime.

Rosary Society
The Rosarians welcome all women of the Parish. The Society
is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, the growth of the love of
God through Mary. We honor the Blessed Mother by the constant and reverent praying of the rosary in our daily life.
We are involved in all Parish activities, liturgical and social –
and keep informed about civic community activities.
Spiritual activities include an Annual Retreat, Annual Communion Breakfast and Baby Shower for Unwed Mothers. The Society raises money to help our Church continue outreach efforts.
The fundraisers include: Christmas Fair, Basket Night, Chinese
Auction.
We attend the 10:00am Mass on the Third Sunday of the
month (except July & August) followed by a meeting & light
breakfast in the School.

The present Holy Name Society members dedicate themselves to corporal works in helping our Parish Organizations

Bereavement Support meet on Monday, Dec. 16 from 7:30

Gamblers Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women
who share their experience, strength and hope with each
other that they may solve their common problem and help
others to recover from a gambling problem. Meeting every
Friday night at 7:30p.m. in the Nazareth Institute.
Overeaters Anonymous members talk about their struggles with compulsive eating. Meeting every Wednesday
night at 8:00p.m. in the Nazareth Institute.
Is your life effected by someone who is drinking? To help
them, you must first help yourself. Al-Anon helps families
and friends of alcoholics recover from the effects of living
with the problem drinking of a relative or friend.

have an E-form so you complete this form without writing. Just e-mail it back to us, or print it out and drop it off. All Requests
must be made using our form. E-mail completed form to AnnaMarie Scuteri at annamariesta@hotmail.com. This is the ONLY
way to reserve a room here at St. A's. The group listed on the parish calendar is the group that has the right to use that
space. If you are not a designated ministry of our parish, permission must be granted from our Pastor, Msgr. Cassato, a rental
fee is paid, and a lease agreement completed in order to use space.
Sunday Bulletin Deadlines The Sunday Bulletin must be e-mailed to our printer by 10a.m. Monday. All announcements must be
submitted in WRITTEN form only (handwritten, typed, computer, fax, e-mailed, etc) by 3p.m. Friday. Announcements received
after the deadline will be published the following week. No one on the parish staff will assume the responsibility for your ministry’s
articles. Include your bulletin articles in your advance planning for your event. All Flyers need to be approved by a staff member
and submitted by Email only to MrsAthanasius@aol.com.
