growler - City of Salem
the growler: a project by elizabeth m schmidt
The Growler is a brew pub and beer garden at the heart of the proposed riverfront warehouse district. The entire district
would be focused on the strengths of local Salem production and the idea of a 24 hour entertainment district. It would be a
home for art and furniture studios, print shops, markets, outdoor recreation centers, restaurants, wine bars, and breweries.
The warehouse district would reconnect Salem with its downtown riverfront and increase the visibility of local production.
The Growler would provide a cornerstone business for the district, located at the intersection of Union St, Front St. and
the proposed river path. It would be a place that combines the presence of a historically significant Salem product with an
entertainment hot spot for warm summer days and weekend nights. Salem has a strong brewing history and the Growler
would bring some of that history to the forefront, while providing waterfront dining and drinking for softball players at
Wallace Marine Park, Truitt Brothers employees, Salem’s growing young professional population and tourists enjoying the
many amenities that downtown Salem offers.
The project focuses on the many ways a person can interact with the people they came with, the other patrons and the
growler employees. By creating a beer hall and beer garden, a visitor can enjoy a quality pint in the beautiful site with
friends or by his or her self without really being alone.
