Vol.14, Ed. 10 The Official Newsletter of the Bay Area Mashtronauts Available Online at www.mashtronauts.com Mashtronauts kick in big for hurricane victims Bocktober 2005 Once again, the Bay Area Mashtronauts demonstrated they are peerless among Houston-area brewing clubs At the October meeting, the group ponied up $745 to give to Hurricane Katrina victims, The funds were then hustled down to the St. Arnold Brewery, which was having a benefit event for the disaster survivors. As a result of the BAM efforts – and a whole lot of other people, too – St. Arnold raised $7,716 in donations. The brewery even gave us a great mention in its newsletter. And, ahem, the Mashtronauts were the only brewclub to get such a nod. Give yourselves a well-deserved pat on the back. $$$ exhorts the troops to dig deep. But not too hard. Remember, you need to brew with that hand. What’s on tap for BAM The Bay Area Mashtronauts’ next meeting will be held October 11 at the iconic Outpost Tavern. The meeting is slated for a 7 p.m. start. The Style of the Month is Belgians. Please get your entries to Dr. Know by 6:30 p.m. Brettanomyces optional. See page 6 for answer From RealBeer.com The Brewers Association recognized three journalists at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The awards were given to Ken Wells for a Wall Street Journal story, to Mike Reidel and Sandy Riesgraf for a piece that appeared on Fox 13 News in Salt Lake City, Utah and to Fred Eckhardt for an All About Beer article. Eckhardt will be the featured attraction at this year’s Dixie Cup, which will be held Oct. 20-22. He won for an article which discussed matching the flavors of beer with those of chocolate and chocolatebased desserts. page 3 Page 4 From Realbeer.com A French dairy farmer has invented a product he calls milk beer. "Everyone thought I was crazy to try to make a milk-based alcohol," said Marcel Besnard. He said low prices and strict quotas had led him to look for other ways to market milk. The new drink, Lactiwel, made from milk and malt, contains 2% alcohol by volume. It is brewed using a fermentation process similar to that of traditional beer, except that instead of using beer yeast for fermentation Bernard uses kefir (a Turkish milk product) yeast and lactic bacteria. The Frenchman said he has also developed a method to change the unsaturated fat content of milk. He currently produces only 300 bottles per week, selling it in small shops, festivals and markets. He hopes to attract investors so he expand production and get his product on to supermarket shelves. "Everybody in their own way, has to contribute to the recovery efforts . . . and our way is to do what we do best. Brew great tasting beer. Our wish is that everyone who enjoys Abita Beer will enjoy it even more, knowing they are helping to restore the areas we all love so much." "The rebuilding and restoration of the greater New Orleans area is vitally important," said brewery president David Blossman. "We're proud to be a Louisiana Company and feel blessed that we are still able to brew beer and keep our employees working." The Abita Springs brewery also created a line of t-shirts, hats and a special "Fleur-de-lis" ribbon pin and car magnet to raise funds for the hurricane victims. Blossman said that 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of the merchandise would go directly to the LDRF. Abita has brewed special "Fleur-delis" Restoration Ale, with one dollar from the sale every six-pack going directly to the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation. All of the items can be viewed and purchased on-line at the Abita Brewing website. The Fleur-de-lis name and symbol were chosen for this very special beer with a dual purpose in mind. It's a well-recognized symbol of New Orleans, but it is also a symbol of light and life. "This brew in every way symbolizes the hope and generosity of our Page 6 No, not Chekhov! The upstanding young lady being groped by said space guy is Celeste Yarnall, who was the last popularlyelected Miss Rheingold. The Miss Rheingold contest was a brewing industry sensation in its heyday. In 1940, Liebmann Brewery – the maker of Rheingold beer – chose a spokesperson and named her Miss Rheingold. The promotion was a hit and the little brewery began to see its sales climb. Two years later, Liebmann decided to let the public decide who would be the new Miss Rheingold. Well, let’s just say that people liked to let their feelings of attractive young females be known. And they also began to support Rheingold. Liebmann soon rose to No. 1 in New York, a position it held well into the 1960s. Yarnall was named Miss Rheingold in 1964. That year, more than 20 million Bocktober 2005 votes were tallied. Only one other U.S. election that year had more interest. Clue: It involved two southwestern coots who wanted to live in publiclysubsidized housing. Anyway, Yarnall went on to a pretty substantial acting and modeling career. Aside from “Star Trek,” she appeared in a number of TV shows and films.
