Roman Dear Supporters, As I begin my third year leading the Capital Area Food Bank, I again extend my heartfelt thanks. Your generosity, compassion, and commitment have made this — our 34th year — a benchmark year for many reasons, and I am deeply grateful. Reflecting back on the year, we have made two major shifts in the way that we approach our work. One of these is the regional focus that we are using as we get food to children, seniors, and families. We have aligned our teams around each of the areas in which we operate: the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, and Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington counties, as well as the City of Alexandria, in Virginia. With staff dedicated to each region, we are well-positioned to understand the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities for our partners in these areas, and the people they serve. Our regional focus also allows us to better engage policymakers and other community stakeholders on the issue of hunger, and to form partnerships that leverage local resources towards the common goal of solving it. The second of these significant shifts is a real commitment to wellness, beginning with the hard work of improving our own food inventory. As part of that effort, we have eliminated full-calorie soda and are working to eliminate sugary snacks that can contribute to diet-related disease. We have also stepped up our already strong commitment to vegetables. the folks we are serving. And planning our crop purchase with local farmers means these partners can plan on having fresh produce for the people that they are reaching. This year, we distributed 42 million pounds of food to children, families, and seniors in need. But we looked hard at the content of our inventory and worked to improve it. About one third of all food distributed was fresh fruits and vegetables — more of them green. We increased our distribution of frozen vegetables and distributed freezers to partner agencies that didn’t have them; added food that partners had requested, including beans, fish, canned chicken, and whole grain products; and worked assiduously to lower salt and added sugar. We also brought our urban demonstration garden into full bloom and production this year, growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, green beans, blackberries, raspberries, and herbs, using the space to teach our partner agencies how to increase their food growing capacity. Families enjoyed our very first season of crops coming from local farmers thanks to a grant from the Marriott Foundation. The Fruits and Vegetables Fund for Greater Washington sources watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, beans, apples, potatoes, and a variety of other fresh produce from local growers in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. We then distribute those fruits and vegetables to our largest 22 food assistance partners feeding those in need, including DC Central Kitchen, Martha’s Table, and Allen Chapel. Buying local means fresher food for Looking to the year ahead, we plan to continue improving and expanding upon our demonstration garden space. We also plan to pursue other innovative ideas, from engaging volunteers in repacking large bins of produce to creating community produce hubs. At the food bank, we are passionately committed to reducing hunger in our region. As we do that, we more deeply appreciate the powerful link between food and wellness and are doing all we can to help those we serve live well. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support in that critical mission. Sincerely, 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 3 2014 CAFB What we Do Feeding the Community Food Donors • YOU! • Manufacturers • Growers • Retailers • USDA CAFB Food Assistance Partners • Soup Kitchens • Food Pantries • Emergency Shelters • Daycare Centers • Senior Programs • Group Homes Direct Food Distribution Programs 4 2014 Capital Area Food Bank neighbors in need • Children • Senior Citizens • Families • Working Poor • Homeless • Victims of Disaster CAFB 2014 how we do it Our Partners and Distribution Programs food assistance partners Our Food Assistance Partners work on the ground to offer food from the CAFB to neighbors in need; these partners include faithbased organizations, food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, senior programs, daycare centers and more. Picture that!” –Amy Hedges, DC Regional Coordinator 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 7 2014 CAFB Advocating for food access “Educate, empower, and enlighten”. These words from the food bank’s mission statement articulate the organization’s commitment not only to feeding people, but to bringing about systemic change through advocacy. And as a part of its regional approach to addressing hunger needs, the food bank has brought out advocacy efforts home to DC, Maryland and Virginia, engaging city, county, and state officials around the issue of hunger and how to solve it. In northern Virginia, for instance, the staff of the food bank’s Lorton facility makes education and advocacy a daily activity, seeing every interaction as an opportunity to exchange ideas. The team participates in a number of coalitions, including the Greater Prince William Food Council, the Greater Prince William Human Services Coalition, the Fairfax County Food Providers Network, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks. In addition to their coalition work, the Virginia regional team engages legislators one-on-one, and has instituted a day of service for Virginia elected officials. Similarly, the food bank’s Maryland regional team has cultivated strong partnerships for the food bank’s Family Market program. Both the Montgomery County Council and Montgomery Public Schools contributed funding to expand the program to more high need schools. The Prince George’s County Council views Family Markets as a critical component of their 8 2014 Capital Area Food Bank Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative, the purpose of which is to uplift six County neighborhoods that face significant economic and educational challenges. The Maryland regional team is also a strong contributor to both the Montgomery County Food Council and the Prince George’s Food Equity Council and has encouraged both groups to advocate for improved food access in food deserts. In Washington, DC, the regional team has provided significant contributions to the city’s burgeoning food policy efforts. The team supported legislation that doubled the minimum SNAP benefit for DC residents, required the city to provide meal services to students on snow days, and enabled the creation of the city’s first food policy council headed by a Food Policy Director. The DC regional team has also provided guidance around two of the city’s major strategies: Sustainable DC and Age Friendly DC, which lay a framework for a more equitable, livable city. CAFB 2014 A regional approach: Maryland 11.1% CAFB’s service area in Maryland includes Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. of residents in our Maryland service region are at risk of hunger 192 food assistance partners are serving those in need in Maryland 11,401,031 meals distributed in FY14 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 9 2014 CAFB We’re All Ears! Sharing a meal with someone is one of the best ways to get to know them. So in 2014, the Capital Area Food Bank continued a tradition started by CEO Nancy E. Roman of holding a series of winter lunches with our partners in neighborhoods throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia. CAFB staff listened while partners shared challenges faced by the people they serve, types of food clients request, and new ways CAFB can power hunger relief. These conversations helped to inform CAFB’s priorities going forward. At last year’s lunch sessions, partners brought to our attention the need for specific foods, with a focus on healthier shelf stable products, more fresh produce, and more meat. We took this information and developed a list of Core Foods—healthy, shelf stable foods that are now always available on our menu. We also committed to making more meat and fresh produce available at our distribution centers. The forums also serve as an opportunity for partners to connect, network, and share resources. In Montgomery County, for instance, one attendee was struggling to find volunteers to pick up food to serve her neighborhood. Dorothy Boddie, director of Allen 10 2014 Capital Area Food Bank Leaders of Sistas United, a CAFB food assistance partner in Suitland, MD. Chapel AME Church food pantry nearby, was also in attendance and immediately offered to assist. Now, in addition to trips she makes to the CAFB for her own food pantry, Ms. Boddie regularly helps her new friend to pack up items for her program as well. The feedback from these sessions has proven so valuable that the food bank has expanded the model, hosting lunches for seniors who participate in its Grocery Plus (formerly Commodity Supplemental Food Program) and Senior Brown Bag programs. Effectively meeting the need of our partners, and the people who access food from them, is always a priority for the food bank. The CAFB is committed to keeping our ears open by hosting listening lunches each year, learning about the changing landscape of hunger, and ensuring a personal connection with those we serve. CAFB 2014 A regional approach: Virginia 6.9% of Virginia residents strugge to provide food for their families 129 food assistance partners are serving those in need in Virginia 6,503,790 meals CAFB’s service area in Virginia includes Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington counties and the city of Alexandria. distributed in FY14 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 11 2014 CAFB A Growing Commitment to Good Food & Wellness Top: Martha’s Table CEO Patty Stonesifer, Parkdale High School teacher Clint Smith, & CAFB Sr. Director of Food Flow Marian Peele present on wellness at the CAFB Hunger Summit. The connection between healthy food and health is increasingly evident. In 2013-2014, the CAFB participated in the year-long Hunger in America study through its partnership with Feeding America, where staff surveyed food assistance partners and the clients they serve to assess the state of hunger needs in CAFB’s service area. Among other findings were these compelling statistics: • 70 percent of households served reported “purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy” food as the common coping strategy to hunger • 22 percent of households served had a family member with diabetes • 48 percent of households served had a family member with high blood pressure 12 2014 Capital Area Food Bank CAFB is responding to this need by providing increasingly healthful food that is low in sugar and sodium, and high in fiber. We are also continuing to emphasize the distribution of fruits and vegetables. Beyond food, the CAFB’s 500 food assistance partners often ask for nutrition education resources, so CAFB is moving forward with a wellness model that can reach every food assistance partner and client across its vast service area. CAFB staff and volunteer chefs have worked to create more than 80 Recipes from the CAFB Kitchen, all in English and Spanish. Each recipe allows for a home cooked meal that’s low in sodium, low in sugar, budget-friendly, easy and certainly delicious. CAFB 2014 70% of households the food bank serves report “purchasing inexpensive, unhealthy” food as the common coping strategy for hunger The year finished with a strong call for wellness leadership at the CAFB’s annual Hunger Summit, held at the organization’s DC facility on April 25, 2014. Patty Stonesifer, President and CEO of food assistance partner Martha’s Table and former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, joined Clint Smith, a teacher at Parkdale High School, in conversation to discuss how we can better the health of the communities we serve. Providing wellness resources is an increasingly significant part of the food bank’s strategy for serving the region. With the average CAFB client acquiring our food nine times per year (as reported by the 2014 Hunger in America Study), the opportunity is huge to provide health interventions through food and cooking inspiration at each touch point. 301 leaders of food assistance partners particpated in our Agency Achievement Academy workshops, which teach our partners about healthful eating, food growing, volunteer recruitment, and more 74% of 383 children, teens and adults who participated in our 6-week Cooking Matters® nutrition education series are eating more fruits and vegetables 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 13 2014 CAFB food for children and families Regional Child Hunger Statistics 55,000+ of children across Northern Virginia live in houses that lack sufficient access to healthy food 27% of children under the age of 18 lives in food insecure households in DC, making it the sixth most food insecure state in the nation 19% of children in Maryland under the age of 18 lack sufficient access to healthy food 516,068 healthy meals were provided to 3,115 children at risk of hunger in DC, Maryland, and Virginia through our Afterschool and Summer Feeding programs 5,997 more households were served this year when we grew our Family Markets Program from 6 to 16 sites, expanding from 1,053 to 7,050 households 14 2014 Capital Area Food Bank CAFB 2014 food for seniors “When you have to spend money on prescriptions that means that food will run short. That’s a 57% increase over 2013 “I usually eat one meal a day, maybe then I have some peanuts. You’ve got a kid, a wife, a car, food, medicine, gas for the car...to end up with macaroni and cheese is fine, but not every night.” — Preston, client served by CAFB 16 2014 Capital Area Food Bank CAFB 2014 data Driven Strategies To Strengthen the Hunger Safety Net They say you can’t manage what you can’t mea- sure. In 2014, the CAFB took this idea to heart as we began to focus our efforts on collecting and using data to drive a deeper understanding of the need in the locations we serve; the amounts and types of food we distribute; and the people that we are feeding. First, we are creating a mapping tool that will allow for a visual representation of our presence and impact in the community, as well as unmet need in the region. We have used this information to begin channeling our resources towards areas that have high need but which we are currently reaching with low amounts of food. As part of our efforts to contribute to the health and wellness of the community we serve, we have also created a tool that helps us to assess the nutritional value of our food stream. Based upon sugar, salt, and fiber content, our food receives a ranking as Food or Food+. This has allowed us to respond more efficiently to partner demand; and work with donors to increase the nutritional quality of our food donations. We are also working to better understand the people who are accessing our services. For instance, at our Community Marketplaces, which are free monthly markets for low income individuals in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, each patron has a bar coded key tag. These tags allows us to measure unduplicated attendance at our markets, and, for the first time, to count the children, seniors, and veterans served by a market in addition to the individual who may attend for his or her family. This commitment to data will continue to expand over the course of the next fiscal year, as we grow the data systems and structures required to help us better serve the community. 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 17 2014 CAFB food from the bar Engaging the Legal Community in Hunger Awareness The 2014 Washington legal campaign against hunger raised an unprecedented $130,000 in one month. Under the leadership of former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, DLA Senior Counsel Carl Vacketta, and Mark Ruge of K&L Gates, proceeds enabled the Capital Area Food Bank to provide more than 300,000 meals for residents in need. Formerly known as Outlaw Hunger, organizations in D.C. adopted Food From the Bar—a national grassroots movement led by legal communities in more than a dozen cities nationwide—in spring of 2014. A hallmark of the campaign is the fun and creative ways legal professionals give back. For instance, Bracewell & Giuliani was recognized for creating “Dareoke”—a competition where one participant bets another to sing. This campaign is part of Capital Area Food Bank’s strategic objective to engage the community in awareness about hunger and how to solve it. Throughout the campaign, firms are encouraged to volunteer at the food bank and facilitate conversations about hunger in the community. Quick 2014 Stats 1992 Food From the Bar started in California Law firms celebrate funds raised for CAFB with a friendly game of bocce. $42,622—the equivalent of 107,010 meals DLA Piper raised the most funds for the DC campaign in 2014 $130,000 raised from may 1–30 by 30 law schools, law firms and organizations 1.5 million meals Campaign has raised since 2008 for children, families and seniors at risk of hunger For every $10 donated the Capital Area Food Bank can provide the equivalent of 25 meals “CAFB aims to make Food from the Bar the #1 campaign nationally, overtaking Los Angeles and San Francisco!” 18 2014 Capital Area Food Bank CAFB 2014 Federal employees respond to summer hunger Hunger doesn’t take a break in the summer. With children out of school, household food needs can often be greater during this time, even while donations to food banks tend to drop. So federal employees, armed with a healthy dose of competition and a mission to provide support for our community, have been responding to this need with a summer long food drive, resulting in hundreds of thousands of healthy meals for those we serve. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack honors funds raised for CAFB through Feds Feed Families. As a response to a decline in feeding programs throughout the summer months, Rep. Frank Wolf and John Berry, former Director of Office of Personal Management, teamed up in 2009 to launch the Feds Feed Families Campaign. The USDA took the torch in 2013, leading the campaign with support from the Chief Human Capital Officers Council and other agency partners. socials, and healthy competition among agencies has fostered collaboration as groups share best practices and ideas for increasing donor engagement. Nationally, over 25 million pounds of food have been collected since the beginning of the campaign. Through this campaign, federal agencies across the United States partner with local food banks from June to August to collect and provide healthy food donations, striving to reach increasing food poundage goals each year. Participants have gotten creative in order to bring in more donations, hosting everything from golf tournaments to ice cream In the Washington DC area, we have been impressed by the local participation. Just last summer, the Capital Area Food Bank received over 600,000 pounds of food, including canned proteins, low sodium canned vegetables, and fruits in their own juices, making this food drive one of the largest annual drives benefitting the organization. 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 19 2014 CAFB financials for fiscal year 2014 Capital Area Food Bank Consolidated Statement of Activities for the Year Ending June 30, 2014 With Summarized Financial Information for the Year Ending June 30, 2013 Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted 2014 Total 2013 Total $36,541,689 12,493,485 2,166,521 2,440,927 610,649 208,334 9,811 $33,707,663 11,848,049 2,795,496 1,273,108 420,850 208,334 68,717 SUPPORT & REVENUE In-kind food contributions Contributions and grants Program service fees Federal and state grants Donated materials and services Interest income from note receivable Other Income Net assets released from donor restrictions: Released from purpose restrictions Released from time restrictions Total Operating Revenue & Support $36,541,689 9,807,364 2,166,521 2,440,927 610,649 208,334 9,811 $ --- 2,686,121 --- --- --- --- --- 2,639,503 (2,639,503) 1,233,499(1,233,499) --- -------- $ 55,658,297$ (1,186,881)$ 54,471,416$50,322,217 EXPENSES Program Services: Food resourcing and logistics Partner relations and agency training Food for kids Other food programs Total Program Services Supporting Services: Management & General Fundraising Total Supporting Services Total Expenses Change in net assets before other income (loss) Other Income (Losss) Investment income (loss) Gain on sale property Changes in net assets Net Assets, beginning of the year 44,814,788 2,924,013 1,319,778 211,536 49,270,115 --- --- --- --- --- 44,814,788 2,924,013 1,319,778 211,536 49,270,115 1,434,338 --- 1,434,338 2,472,852 --- 2,472,852 3,907,190--- 3,907,190 38,386,093 4,592,029 1,405,358 292,610 44,676,090 1,876,714 2,367,088 4,243,802 53,177,305 --- 53,177,305 48,919,892 2,480,992 (1,186,881) 1,294,111 1,402,325 18,583 --- --- --- 18,583 --- (2,630) 4,097,840 2,499,575(1,186,881) 23,463,409 43,646,347 38,148,812 NET ASSETS AT END OF YEAR$ 22,682,513$ 22,276,528 $ 44,959,041 $ 43,646,347 20 2014 Capital Area Food Bank 20,182,938 1,312,694 5,497,535 CAFB 2014 Food assistance Partners by Region washington, dc Council Of Churches Mother Dears Anchor Mental Association So Others Might Eat Community Family Life Services Bread For The City Food & Clothing Center of Ward 7 Brethren Nutrition Program The Holy Temple Church Purity Baptist Church Joseph’s House Operation Sisters United St. Martins Social Service Humility Outreach Missionary Ministries (HOMMI) Inc THRIVE DC Family & Medical Counseling Service Neighbors Consejo House of Ruth Madison McClendon Center Spanish Catholic Center Plymouth Food Pantry Central Union Mission Father Mckenna Center Miriam’s Kitchen Mt Airy Baptist Church First Baptist Church of Deanwood National City Christian Church YMCA of Metropolitan Washington Brighter Day Ministries Food Pantry Foggy Bottom Food Pantry Seabury at Home First National Children Center Martha’s Table Latin American Youth Center Damien Ministries Food Pantry Covenant Community Pantry Nineteenth Street Baptist Church First SDA Community Kitchen Ionia R Whipper Home Inc Assumption Outreach Mary House Little Sisters of the Poor Garfield Terrace McKendree-Simms-Brookland Untied Methodist Church Dupont Park SDA Church Sixth Church Food Closet Access Housing, Inc. Men arriving to work in the town’s coal mines often had nowhere to eat or sleep, and Carl vividly remembers the stories he heard growing up about his grandparents inviting miners to join them at the family dinner table. “There’s always room for one more”, his grandparents would say. That attitude of generosity would stick with Carl throughout his life. Giving Back Carl traces his desire to give back—which has prompted him to be a significant contributor to the food bank through the years as well as a leader in the legal community’s response to hunger—to the early influences of his family. Carl received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois, directly attributing the opportunity to do so to his father’s hard work and long hours at the same grocery store that his grandfather had started. While still in college, Carl decided that if he could help those around them, he would. And he has, starting with his support of his alma mater and, later, his involvement with the food bank. His grandfather, upon immigrating from Italy, first settled in Louisiana and cut sugarcane to support his family. Moving to escape persecu- Thirteen years ago, Carl began volunteering at the food bank with colleagues from DLA Piper. In 2003, he joined the organization’s board, 2014 Capital Area Food Bank and has served in a variety of board leadership roles since, including as a member of its Executive Committee in the capacity of Secretary. Carl was an active contributor to the food bank’s capital campaign and efforts around the food bank’s construction of and move to a new building in 2012, and in 2014, he was instrumental in raising over $130,000 from the DC legal community through the Food From the Bar campaign (see story, page 18). Paying it Forward With his retirement approaching, Carl has done some estate planning. Those plans include the Capital Area Food Bank as one of his beneficiaries. In Carl’s words: “When one was raised as I was, and received the benefits and rewards that I did, at some point you have to decide how you will give back — whether it’s a lot or a little.” The food bank is grateful to Carl — and those like him — who have chosen to support the food bank and the wider community by giving generously of their time, resources, and selves. CAFB 2014 Bequests Fiscal year 2013-2014 We recognize the commitment and leadership of the following individuals who have decided to make planned gifts to the Capital Area Food Bank. If you have included the food bank in your estate plans and are not listed, please contact Claudia Morris at 202-644-9859, or email her at cmorris@capitalareafoodbank.org so that we may properly acknowledge your kindness.
