Am I really writing the intro for our final brochure of the
year? It’s true what they say, time flies when you’re
having fun! And what fun we’ve had this year, all
culminating in this brilliant autumn/winter programme.
Our new partnership with Curzon Cinema’s has been
very successful – helping us bring events like the sell
out Pompeii LIVE and Stephen Fry in Twelfth Night to
the people of Deeside. This season sees us screening
some wonderful operas from the MET in New York
and the RSC’s Richard II with David Tennant. They
have also worked with us on curating our first film
weekend – around the theme of sound + image with
some fantastic films and live performances. This
is a prelude to the wonderful sound festival which
launches at the Barn on 23rd October.

Over the summer we’ve been working on two projects
of which you can see the results this winter. Framed
Against The Sky was a partnership project with sound
and saw us taking new music into the nooks and
crannies of Aberdeenshire. At the sound launch you
will get to hear the new piece of music written by
composer Brian Irvine and poet Billy Letford, performed
by Red Note Ensemble. And our Atomic Doric project
which has been working in nature reserves across
Aberdeenshire will culminate in a fantastic 3-day
festival at the end of November – not to be missed!
Other highlights include award winning artist Torsten
Lauschmann’s Open Visual Lab in the Barn for all to
pop in and see, and new product label Dig This by
Third Stage and Deirdre Nelson will be launched in
the gallery during the Luminate Festival.
There’s so much exciting stuff this season so I’ll leave
it there and let you start exploring these pages for yourself!

Festival of new work celebrating Aberdeenshire
Wounded Knee
The Atomic Doric Festival will showcase the results of our Year of
Natural Scotland project. Over the summer several artists have
been working across Aberdeenshire exploring the people and
natural spaces that make the North East of Scotland so special.
They have been working in St Cyrus, Muir of Dinnet, Mar Lodge
Estate and Glen Tanar Estate with various different community groups
and using a variety of artforms to explore the idea that no matter
which geography you inhabit, you can be at the epicentre of a
universal enquiry. See and hear the results over one inspiring weekend.

Atomic Doric Festival Launch

An evening of film and music premieres,
discussion, food and drink, including:
Chris Dooks Tiny Geographies
Multi-disciplinary artist Chris Dooks will premiere
a series of four short films, collectively titled Tiny
Geographies, at Woodend Barn, 7.30pm. Using a
blend of still images, film and sound recordings,
the films explore breath-taking Scottish locations –
St Cyrus, Muir of Dinnet, Mar Lodge Estate and
Glen Tanar Estate.
Followed by a discussion with the Atomic Doric
artists chaired by Emma Nicolson from ATLAS Arts.

Contemporary folk musician Drew Wright, who
performs as Wounded Knee, will present a selection of
new works to close our launch night; inspired by both
a micro-residency at Mar Lodge Estate in July and the
works of popular Aberdonian writer Nan Shepherd,
who was a keen hill walker and lover of nature.

Paul Anderson & Aidan O’Rourke
Acclaimed Scottish fiddlers Paul Anderson and
Aidan O’Rourke will debut a series of new works at
Woodend Barn – including performances from local
musicians. The pieces, especially commissioned by
the Atomic Doric project and in celebration of local
legend Scott Skinner, will embody their reactions
to – and interpretations of – Aberdeenshire’s
natural spaces.
While Paul embraces the tradition and history of local
music, Aidan takes recognisable traditional roots and
leads them in adventurous new directions.
The contrast between the two musicians’ playing
styles will allow for an exciting and varied programme.

Sunday 1 December 3pm
Hayley Durward
A new piece of contemporary dance will be unveiled
at Woodend Barn. Trained at the Trinity Laban
Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Hayley Durward
will perform ‘A Personal Landscape’ inspired by
spaces across Aberdeenshire, in particular St Cyrus.
Noize Choir
The musical score developed in direct response to
the Burn O’Vat will be revealed in this special one off
performance. Founded by Lindsay Duncanson and
Marek Gabrysch, Noize Choir uses only the human
voice and innovative microphone techniques to create
other-worldly compositions.

Glen Tanar Ballroom 7.30pm
Artists from the project come together one last time
to showcase the work they produced over the year.
Paul and Aidan will give you another chance to hear
their new compositions and Chris Dooks will present
elements of his new work. The evening will culminate
in a fantastic ceilidh with Johnnie Hardie joining Paul,
Aidan and other local musicians for a night of top craic
and good dancing.

John Grierson’s Drifters with live
music from Wounded Knee
Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board,
Drifters followed a herring drifter from departure in
Scotland to market in East Anglia. John Grierson
had previously overseen an English language version
of Battleship Potemkin for its American release and
Eisenstein’s influence can be seen both in his own
film and in many of those that followed under his
watchful eye at the GPO Film Unit. £7.00, £5.00 conc. + bf

Ceilidh Spot
Taking the ceilidh back to its traditional format – a
social event where communities gathered together to
share stories and enjoy a dram or two, we invite you
to join us for an evening of chatting, reciting, ranting,
singing and/or dancing!
Each month will have a different guest artist and guest
musicians to keep the event flowing, but the content
and shape will be up to you! If you’d be interested
in sharing your poems, playing a tune, or leading a
discussion on a topic of your interest let us know!
This month’s ceilidh spot will feature discussion
around sound + image from Pete Stollery and
Wounded Knee and music from Paul Anderson (tbc).

Lelouch’s electrifying 9-minute drive has to be seen to be

dialogue-free film to win an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Composer Pete Stollery will create a musical response to
the film linked to the thrill of a roaring engine.

Step Across The Border
(Humbert + Penzel 1990)
This film takes two forms of artistic expression,
improvised music and cinema direct, and builds a
relationship between the two.
Ostensibly a documentary following guitarist Fred
Frith, the film itself is an artform and seeks to interpret
the music while documenting the formation of Frith’s
latest group Keep the Dog. A truly groundbreaking film
about an inventive and challenging musician,
that continues to inspire as much as it did when it
was originally released.

legendary film with its surprise ending has been
shrouded in myths since its first release.
Was seminal French director Claude Lelouch really
arrested when it was first shown? Was it a Formula 1
driver in the iconic Ferrari 275 GTB at the wheel?
If it’s real, how did he do it?
Remember Remember:
Live Audio-Visual performance
Remember Remember is the musical brainchild of
multi-instrumentalist Graeme Ronald. Initially begun
as a purely solo endeavour, which featured Graeme
utilising both traditional and abstract instrumentation
(wind-up gizmos, toy sharks and the like) all fed
through a huge bank of effects and loop pedals.
The group expanded along with the music and this
7-piece go from sweeping lush soundscapes to
brittle guitar instrumentals.
Remember Remember were nominated for the
inaugural SAY award in 2012, and for this show they’ll
be doing a special audio-visual performance.

In the 28th century, mankind has abandoned the
planet, leaving behind cities ravaged by pollution and
waste along with a sole surviving solar-powered droid
called WALL-E left behind to crush piles of trash.
When a mothership touches down on Earth and spits out
a sleek search-robot called EVE, WALL-E is instantly
smitten and sets about wooing her using tips he picks
up from a worn out video cassette of Hello, Dolly!
An absolute classic from Pixar and one of the finest
animated films ever made.

Berberian Sound Studio
(Strickland 2012) Cert: 15
Peter Strickland, the director of Katalin Varga, returns
with a very different tale with Berberian Sound Studio.
Set in 1976, Toby Jones plays a documentary sound
engineer who finds himself employed by a notorious
low-budget Italian horror studio. Uneasy in his new
environment and surrounded by a world he finds alien,
he throws himself into his work, failing to notice how
life is slowly beginning to imitate art.
Strickland’s film is both an homage to the Italian films
of the story and a fitting tribute to the artists who
tirelessly created them.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
(Wiene 1922) Cert: U
In the little village of Holstenwall on the Dutch border,
fairground hypnotist Dr Caligari (Werner Krauss) puts
on show a somnambulist called Cesare (Conrad Veidt)
who has been asleep for twenty-three years. At night,
dressed in a black body-stocking and with a ghostly
white face, he slithers through the town murdering
people on the doctor’s orders. A student (Friedrich
Feher) has his suspicions about Caligari after a friend
is found dead and it transpires that the doctor is the
director of a lunatic asylum. The story also has a sting
in the tail added by the producer!
This classic German horror film will be soundtracked
by Jazz guitarist Graeme Stephen.

Set in World War II, it is a story of courage, a story
of survival and a story of enduring friendship.
Pianist Sarah Beth Briggs is a leading recitalist, concerto
soloist, and chamber musician. Her musical interpretations
have been broadcast internationally while recital work has
taken her across Europe and the USA.
On Friday 13 September 1940, a ship set sail from
Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees
escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of
war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship
was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the
evacuees survived.

DIG THIS Preview
Third Stage over 60s art group have created their own
design label with textile artist Deirdre Nelson. Using
Woodend Barn’s allotments as inspiration they have
created digital prints which they have used on their
own product line, combining craft, design and digital
technologies the group will launch their products during
this exciting exhibition. As well as the final products on
sale, there will be images and textiles that showcase the
project’s development.

Our new season from the Metropolitan Opera in New York
opens with this sumptuous production of Eugene Onegin.
Anna Netrebko and Mariusz Kwiecien star as the lovestruck
Tatiana and the imperious Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s fateful
romance. Deborah Warner’s new production moves
episodically from farmhouse to ballroom, with a powerful
snowstorm providing the dramatic setting for the finale.

Film: Epic (Wedge 2013) Cert: U
Boo Hewerdine and Brooks Williams have been stalwarts
of their respective folk scenes for a generation and finally
got together to record an album which was released last
year to great acclaim.
Epic is an action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden
world unlike any other. From the creators of Ice Age, Epic
tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest
between the forces of good who keep the natural world
alive, and the forces of evil who wish to destroy it.
Mixing Boo’s peerless songwriting with Brooks slide guitar
mastery, they set out to record an album in 5 days using
vintage equipment. They worked so well together that
they finished it in a day and a half.
When a teenage girl finds herself magically transported into
this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag
team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their
world and ours. Boo has played with Eddi Reader, Heidi Talbot, Kris
Drever and wrote Eddi’s smash-hit “Patience of Angels”.

Film: From Up On Poppy Hill
The Poozies
(Miyazaki 2011) Cert: U
The Poozies began their odyssey over 20 years ago,
when folk musicians wore elaborately patterned woolly
jumpers and were only seen in dingy back rooms or very
late at night on BBC2. From the word “go” they were
breaking out and happily exploring the musical universe.
The latest Studio Ghibli offering is a typically lavish
production, as befitting arguably the world’s finest animation
house. Goro Miyazaki’s (Tales from Earthsea) sophomore
feature is set in 1960s Yokohama and follows the
burgeoning romance between two school children.
It’s a gentle film, filled with nostalgia for the past and tinged
with a bittersweet edge as the pair attempt to solve a
mystery concerning their upbringing in post-war Japan.
Pioneers of unusual and exciting arrangements, not only
from the rich vein of traditional Gaelic culture but from
any enticing genre, they take their audiences on a
sparkling, spine-tingling journey through a sometimes
fantastical landscape.

The Sky’ Red Note Ensemble
Aaron (George MacKay) is the lone survivor of a fishing trip
that claimed the lives of five men including his older brother,
Michael (Jordan Young). Unable to remember the details of
their trip, and feeling the weight of the community’s collective
grief, Aaron’s sense of helplessness escalates into the belief
that Michael and the other men somehow survived.
Over the past few months charismatic Irish composer, Brian
Irvine, and roofer by day, poet by night, Billy Letford, have
been touring Aberdeenshire & City with Red Note Ensemble
introducing people to new music and holding workshops
in schools and open workshops during events. Workshop
participants have been helping Brian and Billy create a new
piece of music which is being premièred tonight with the
involvement of participants alongside Red Note Ensemble.
Filmed in Gourdon, this film received it’s premiere at Cannes
this year and earned a 4 star review in the Times.

Dancelive: 9-2-5 Heartbeatz
Christina Gusthart has performed across the world with
crews in breakdance competitions, and broke the mould
as one of the few female hip-hop dancers in Scotland.
925 brings her expressive and demanding style together
with one of the fastest growing phenomenon on Youtube
– the daredevil moves of acrobatic parkour.
925 fuses the parkour approach to movement with the
flow of contemporary dance, the mischief of acrobatics
and the fresh, playful style of hip-hop; integrating
multi-media into a dance-theatre experiment to shake up
audiences in style.

Kirikou and the Sorceress was joint winner of the 2002
British Animation Award for Best European Animated
Feature. Showing how tiny but brave Kirikou outwits a
powerful sorceress, this enchanting adventure was inspired
by the folk stories of Senegal.

The English Patient tells the story of Count Almásy who is
a mapmaker employed by the Royal Geographical Society
to chart the vast expanse of the Sahara. As World War II
unfolds, Almásy enters into a world of love, betrayal, and
politics that is later revealed in a series of flashbacks while
Almásy is on his death bed after being horribly burned in a
plane crash.
Writer-director Michel Ocelot’s fresh vision of Africa is a
world away from Disney’s singing lions and features an
authentic soundtrack by Youssou N’dour.

Dancelive: Plan B
WMS: Ligeti Quartet
Reflecting on the expansive and evolving nature of
the sky and its behaviours, the choreography is subtle
and gentle before ascending into powerful sequences
performed beautifully by the dancers. Accompanied
throughout by live music and a specially commissioned
soundscape from Lila Senior, the piece is completed by a
magical, layered design by Miranda Melville.
Tonight we celebrate the life and work of experimental
British composer Jonathan Harvey who sadly died
towards the end of 2012. Harvey’s contributions to music
are profound and hugely influential. The screening of
Barrie Gavin’s new portrait film seeks to explore Harvey’s
musical and philosophical world by means of a journey
outward from his own thoughts and from his actual workroom. Preceding the performance plan B will screen their 13
minute dance film Away From Here. Set in the dramatic
West Highlands of Scotland, Away From Here examines
the fleeting relationship of people to a sense of place and
belonging; exploring the incongruity of our relationship to
an ancient landscape.
William Kentridge stormed the Met with his inventive
production of Shostakovich’s opera, which dazzled opera
and art lovers alike in its inaugural run in 2010. Now Paulo
Szot reprises his acclaimed performance of a bureaucrat,
whose satirical misadventures in search of his missing nose
are based on Gogol’s comic story. Valery Gergiev conducts.

This concert and conversation celebrates the recent
publication of Joachim Steinheuer/Rohan de Saram
“Conversations”. The book is a fascinating portrait of
Rohan’s musical life from early years in Sri Lanka
through six decades and counting, as a world-renowned
soloist and chamber musician.
A patron of sound, Rohan’s work spans both western
classical music and eastern traditions; he has worked with
many of the best known composers of the last
two generations. Rohan will also play pieces by Bach,
Kodaly and James Dillon.

Despite being only 21, Carrbridge native Rachel Sermanni has
already achieved a great deal. She’s supported Mumford and
Sons on tour, released a critically acclaimed debut album which
sold more than 1000 copies in its first week, and toured Europe
and North-America to promote it. She wowed the Barn last
year and we’re delighted to put her on in the very special Migvie
Church, allowing her voice and songs to soar.

Curzon Cinemas and Woodend Barn will bring you the first
ever live cinema broadcast from the Stratford stage of the RSC.
This sell-out production of Richard II, with David Tennant in
the title role and directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory
Doran. Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people.
But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose
vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and
drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years.

Torsten Lauschmann: Inconsistent
Whisper & Matter in the Wrong Place
The Croods
(Sanders/DeMicco 2013) Cert: U
Glasgow-based German artist Torsten Lauschmann explores
the limits and possibilities of technology in an experimental
performance-installation at Woodend Barn with Red
Note Ensemble and local musicians. From talking drums
and Morse code to the game of Chinese Whispers, this
absorbing work looks at the problems and the beauty of
misinterpretations, misinformation and misunderstanding.
The Croods is a prehistoric comedy adventure that follows
the world’s first family as they embark on a journey of a
lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from
danger is destroyed.
Torsten will also present the results of his open visual lab
residency at the Barn with Charlie Hammond. This work will
use projections and objects, static and animated to explore
play, failure and mistakes as creative potential.

Son al Son
MacRobert Hall, Tarland
The band Son al Son was formed in 2008. Its line-up is
made up of musicians from Cuba and Scotland playing
Havana son music, the style made famous in “Buena Vista
Social Club”. To this day, songs like Chan Chan, El Cuarto
Del Tula and Dos Gardenias are played in cafes and bars
across Cuba.
Son al Son have added songs from La Excelencia,
Cubanismo and original songs to bring a more ‘salsa dura’
(hard salsa!) feel to their set. Son al Son will get your feet
tapping and out of your seat in no time!

13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty, both excluded
from school and outsiders in their own neighbourhood,
meet Kitten a local scrapdealer, and begin collecting scrap
metal for him using a horse and cart.
Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor emulates
Kitten – keen to impress him and make some money.
But when Kitten begins to favour Swifty, leaving Arbor hurt
and excluded, a wedge is driven between the boys.

Trembling Bells have stamped a massive psych-rock
footprint on the folk scene of late, fusing improvised music,
folk revivalism and the spirit of medieval troubadours mixed
with Springsteen and the cream of 70’s rock.
Formed by Alex Nielson, they’ve toured with the Unthanks
and released a collaborative album with Bonnie Prince Billy
(Nielson has featured in Will Oldham’s touring band) and
most recently worked with Mike Heron.
“the term “folk-rock” suggests something reedy and
pastoral, possibly featuring a banjo. Trembling Bells burrow
deeper into both genres, channelling energies ancient,

Duncan Chisholm presents his ground breaking
multi-media production Kin. Incorporating music, film,
photographs and dialogue, Kin is a beautifully crafted
journey into the past, which is illuminating, evocative
and moving.
Aberdeenshire-born guitarist Ian Watt has appeared as a
soloist throughout the world and as a concerto soloist with
orchestras including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
This multi-media production celebrates landscape,
language, tradition, community and family, young and
old. These are the things which Duncan describes as
being fundamental to the Highland psyche, “to our place
in the world and to the inspiration of our people”.

This autumn A Moment’s Peace Theatre Company are
working with local groups across Aberdeenshire, to explore
the diverse relationships individuals and communities have

why and where questions; from personal choices about
consumption, to examining who is in control of our access
to food.
The outcome is three unique short films that seek to inspire

‘Puffin Wreck’ is a powerful testimony to the devastation
of climate change. On 3rd May 2013 I found eighty three
puffin carcasses on a stretch of beach at Lunan Bay less
than a mile long. This presented itself as a metaphor for
the intangibility of life. The sequence of drapes and veils
separate the material substance of life from the ethereal.
The pen and ink drawings represent not only my own but
every living creature’s affinity to the natural world.
We share the same fate, death, we share the same
planet, Earth.
Do you believe in Santa Claus?
Kris Kringle is hired to play Santa in Cole’s department
store during the Christmas season, the only problem is that
he seems to believe he really is Santa Claus.
After a raucous appointment with the store’s incompetent
psychologist, Kris is sent to a mental hospital for assessment.
He then has to go to court to prove his sanity, with the help
of some friends and the people of New York who have to
decide if they really believe in the spirit of Christmas.

Formed to help us celebrate 20 years of Woodend Barn,
the Woodend Barnstormers blitzed our stage last year and
we’re delighted to put them on in Tarland prior to heading
off to wow Celtic Connections.
Christmas Wild Card: We put this film to a vote on social
media and our volunteers and you’ve chosen Home Alone!
The McAllister family are heading off to Paris for their Christmas
vacation but manage to forget their youngest family member
Kevin. At first Kevin is enjoying the run of the house but then
he discovers two burglars have targeted his house.
Jonny Hardie and Davy Cattanach put together a band
featuring some of the finest folk musicians in Scotland,
then set about recording new songs inspired by the myths
and legends of north-east Scotland. Featuring members
of Saltfishforty, The Chair, The Poozies and more, this is a
folk supergroup who are not to be missed.
Kevin sets about building an elaborate series of booby traps to
fend off the dastardly duo and bring them to justice.
An undisputed master of Falstaff, Music Director James
Levine conducts Verdi’s opera for the first time at the Met
since 2005. Robert Carsen’s production – the first new Met
Falstaff since 1964 – is set in the English countryside in the
mid-20th century. Ambrogio Maestri sings the title role of the
brilliant and blustery Sir John Falstaff, opposite a marvelous
ensemble cast.

Third Stage over 60s art group have created their own design
label with textile artist Deirdre Nelson. Using Woodend Barn’s
allotments as inspiration they have created digital prints which they
have used on their own product line, combining craft, design and
digital technologies the group will launch their products during this
exciting exhibition. As well as the final products on sale, there will
be images and textiles that showcase the project’s development.

Torsten Lauschmann Open Visual Lab
Glasgow-based German artist Torsten Lauschmann will be in
residence at the Barn developing new work, Matter in the Wrong
Place. Working with Charlie Hammond, they are planning to create a
performance/screening which incorporates projections and objects,
static and animated. The work will explore play, failure and mistakes
as creative potential.
The Woodend Barn Performance space will turn into an open visual
lab where they will produce, test and present the work for all who
drop by. The result of the residency will be performed/screened in
conjunction with “Inconsistent Whisper” featuring Red Note Ensemble
and local musicians on 11th November.
