HISTORY OF SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY
Feast of Lupercalia
Historians trace the origin of Valentine's Day to ancient Roman Empire. It is said that in the Rome of ancient times
people observed a holiday on February 14th to honor Juno - the Queen of Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans
also regarded Juno as the Goddess of Women and Marriage. On the following day, February 15th began the fertility
festival called 'Feast of Lupercalia'. The festival of Lupercalia was celebrated to honor the Gods Lupercus and Faunus the Roman God of Agriculture besides the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.
An interesting custom was followed in the Feast of Lupercalia to bring together young boys and girls who otherwise
were strictly separated. On the eve of the festival names of young Roman girls were written on a slip of paper and
placed into jars. Each young man drew out a girl's name from the jar and was paired with the girl for the duration of
Lupercalia. Sometime pairing lasted for a year, or a lifetime.
During the reign of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in several bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius found
it tough to get soldiers and felt the reason was men did not join army because they did not wish to leave their wives and
families. As a result Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. A romantic at heart priest of Rome Saint
Valentine defied Claudius's unjustified order. Along with Saint Marius, St Valentine secretly married couples. When his
defiance was discovered, Valentine was brutally beaten and put to death on February 14, about 270 AD. After his death
Valentine was named a Saint.

FOR 50 CENTS. THESE ARE THE SAME CONTAINERS MEMBERS USE FOR TAKE HOME CONTAINERS AT
OUR COVERED DISH EVENTS. QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS, REGARDING THIS MATTER, CAN BE
ADDRESSED TO TRACY.

DIRECTORS DO NOT WISH ANY MEMBER TO
ATTEMPT TRAVEL IN RISKY WEATHER. TO
AVOID ANY UNNECESSARY TRIPS, PLEASE

BOOK CLUB NEWS…The next
book, Innocent as Sin, by
Elizabeth Lowell will be available
by Thursday February 5. This is a
mystery and the book club will
meet to discuss the book on
February 26 at 12:15.
From the Board….
We don’t always get it right; however, we always have the safety of our members as our FIRST
priority. I understand there are days that you may wonder why we have a delay or closing when the
roads are fine in your area. Unfortunately, Mother Nature does not always follow the forecast and/or
timing provided by the weather people.
The procedures to be followed require a decision to be made and all phone calls be made and
completed to the Nutrition Group and YCAAA prior to 5:30 AM. This means Trena is checking on road
conditions and updated forecasts before 5 AM. Trena then checks with me for input and the
conditions in Craley and jointly we make a decision as to what we feel would be best for our
members.
Other considerations we are faced with include the amount of ice/snow received and the necessity of
plowing. The parking lot is a responsibility of the township and it is NOT a priority when the roads
need to be plowed. If icy conditions are the problem, will the temperatures rise quickly enough to
melt the ice in the parking lot and on the walkways? When is the inclement weather forecasted to
arrive? If forecasted for late morning, is the temperature cold enough for the precipitation to freeze
on contact? If members are at the center will they be able to safely walk to their cars and drive
home? If it is a HDM day, is it safe for our volunteer drivers to be out on the roads?
Unless you live across the road from the center, you cannot drive to the center without dealing with
hills and winding roads; neither of which are easy to maneuver in inclement weather.
Hopefully, the groundhog will not see his shadow and spring is right around the corner! If not, please
be patient if the center is delayed or closed due to weather conditions; we want you to remain safe
and be able to come when we are open.
