Joji Thanugundla, Associate Pastor July 14, 2013 The Greek Philosopher Herecletus said “Nothing is permanent except change”. “Change alone is unchanging.” The month of July is very busy here as we are going through many changes. Change of a pastor is an important aspect in the life of any parish community. With Fr. Bill retiring and Fr. Matt coming as the new pastor we are preparing in many ways. One important thing is that the message of Christ and the values Jesus taught and continues to teach, never change. Even though there may be changes in the administration and the way things are done, we remember from the letter to the Hebrews 13:8…Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Fr. Bill beautifully shared the reflections in his final thoughts about being proud Catholics to walk in Faith, live in Hope, and act in Love. We hope and pray that the kingdom of God within each of us will continue to grow and reach out to all people under all circumstances with the able guidance of Fr. Matt Foley, our new Pastor. One can never thank Fr. Bill enough for his selfless service as a Pastor of St. James and as a wonderful priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We thank him wholeheartedly for sharing his ministry, love, wisdom and his life with us. Good luck again Fr. Bill, you will be GREATLY missed. I have known him only for four years (it feels like I have known him forever). I can write a book with no ending with the title, The Man, The Myth and The Legend. This weekend, we hear from the scriptures about Jesus who is the invisible image. We, as a community are the visible image of Jesus and His message. Let the world see in us and through us Christ Jesus. We also hear a great story from Jesus teaching us to love our neighbor. The Good Samaritan must be you and me, who are ever ready to bind the wounds of the world and to heal the brokenness of humanity. During this summer I am going around for a few weekends to preach mission appeals. I am traveling to Springfield, Green Bay and NY. If you do not see me at church on a few weekends, know that I am praying for you wherever I am doing the mission appeal. I thank you for your understanding of my absence here on these weekends. My mission appeals will support the poor in India. On the same note, we are having Fr. James Okoye preaching our summer appeal this weekend. Please be generous in supporting the missions. Keep me in your prayers as you are in mine. With gratitude, Fr. Joji Thanugundla. (A podcast of this week’s reflection is available on the St. James website and mobile website.) Mission Appeal at St. James On the weekend of July 13th & 14th, 2013, Rev. James Okoye, C.S.Sp., will visit our parish to speak at the Masses about the missionary work of the Church and in particular that of the Fathers of the Holy Spirit — (“the Spiritans”) earlier known as the Holy Ghost Fathers. This visit is part of a national program whereby annually a representative of one of the missionary groups visits parishes in the Archdiocese to enlist support for the mission work of the Church. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit is an international community engaged in a wide range of missionary activity in many areas of the world. Fr. James himself is from Nigeria, and presently serves as the Director for the Center for Spiritan Studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He had been Provincial of his Nigerian Congregation of Spiritans and General Assistant in the Congregation’s headquarters in Rome. When Jesus said, “You shall witness to me in Jerusalem and Samaria and to the ends of the earth”, He made the spread of the Gospel an essential part of our Catholic life. It is open from 9:00am—7:30pm Monday through Friday, and 9:00am—1:00pm Saturday and Sunday Please stop by and check out our great selection of books! This process is for all men and women who are not baptized, or baptized in another Christian church but in need of further instruction and initiation, or those baptized in the Catholic Church but needing more instruction to complete the sacraments of Initiation. Persons never baptized are referred to as Catechumens, while those previously baptized are called candidates. REASONS TO JOIN R.C.I.A. 1. You're marrying a Catholic. (Sharing and practicing your faith together is a great foundation to a marriage.) 2. You're already married to a Catholic and your kids are being raised Catholic. (It's natural to want to share in the sacramental experiences of your loved one's.) 3. You were baptized Catholic as an infant but never received any further Sacraments. (Many people come to us wanting to take care of this "unfinished business") 4. You've lived in a "Catholic World" all your life. (This program is for people of all ages. Every year someone joins us whom everyone in the Parish assumed was already Catholic.) 5. You don't know much about Catholicism but you have a friend or neighbor who has inspired you to learn more. (Actions speak louder than words.) 6. You've suffered through a personal loss or struggle and are seeking to improve your faith life. ("Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.") 7. You don't know why, you just feel something calling you to the church. (It's the Holy Spirit... listen to it.) The RCIA will begin this fall on September 25th. For more information, contact Jim Hamman at 847-506-1368 or email: jhamman@rcgdirect.com 10 Semi-Retired? Retired? Eager to “give something back?” The Ignatian Volunteer Corps may be for You! Members of this Jesuit service program volunteer in poor and marginalized communities 2 days per week (Sept-June), grow deeper in their Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Jesuit Catholic tradition, and meet monthly with other IVC members and a spiritual reflector. IVC members serve as tutors, employment counselors, food pantry volunteers, elderly companions, hospital chaplains and more! Detailed information is online at www.ivcusa.org (click on ‘Chicago’). To inquire, please contact Jackie Fitzgerald at 312-961-6206 or jfitzgerald@ivcusa.org. SecondandThirdGradeStudents Come join our youngest parish Children’s Choir! Second and third graders are invited to sing as a choir once a month at a weekend mass, at the “Angels and Shepherds” Christmas Mass on Christmas Eve, and a Spring concert in April. The 2nd and 3rd grade choir rehearses on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Laramie Room during the school year. Children have a lot of fun singing and playing musical games at rehearsals. Their first rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 4pm in the Laramie Room. For pre-registration and further information, please contact their choir director, Anita Haapapuro. You can send her an email at haapybride@aol.com or call the parish office 224-345-7200, and leave a message at extension 8502. 11 831 N.
