Fr. Bill Zavaski, Pastor
Dear friends,
The Lord is risen Alleluia! Alleluia! This is a traditional Easter
greeting in the Greek Church and I thought it would be a great
way for us to celebrate this most important event in the Jesus story. Our response
to this greeting is – The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia!
The Easter event is the foundation event of our faith life, for as St. Paul reminds
us, “if Christ has not been raised form the dead our faith is in vain”. Resurrection
makes all the difference in the world to us because by this action Jesus Christ has
clearly overcome the sting and sorrow of death which is an inevitable result of our
fallen human nature. As a pastor, I spend a lot of time helping people deal with
death. Funerals are a frequent occurrence in this community of believers and the
one thing that sustains me and gives me great hope during those times is the fact
that death is never looked upon as the end of our life but rather as the beginning
of a new life, thanks to this Easter story.
Every Sunday the community needs to gather together to remind themselves of
this great moment. In fact, one of the reasons we say that Sunday Mass is an important obligation is the fact that every Sunday needs to be looked upon as a “little
Easter”. I remember answering one of our newly baptized member’s question as
to why was Sunday Mass so important? Why are we obligated to attend Mass on
Sunday? And my response to her was simply that Sunday is our reminder of this
great Easter event and if it were not for this moment in Jesus’ life, our faith life
would not really matter.
I am grateful that you have joined us today on this Easter Sunday and are taking
the time to read this. I also hope that you can check out our parish web site regularly and see all the other great things we are engaged in as a parish community.
This is my last Easter here as pastor and I want to take this opportunity to thank
you again for a wonderful experience over the last 18 years. One of the most incredible things about St. James is the focus many people in our community have
on the Sacred Triduum – the three most holy days of the church year. They are
Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday/Easter morning. These three days
cover the passion and death and rising of Jesus who is at the center of our faith
life. My thanks to all who have worked so long and hard in making this holy week
so special. Having served 2 other parishes in my career as a pastor I can only tell
you that the people of St. James have an awesome opportunity in what we do
here every year. I hope that I might in some way be able to join all of you in the
future during these special days. Right now, though, I am not sure exactly what
will happen to me or my future work, but one of my hopes is to reside here in the
parish in one of our parish homes as a Pastor Emeritus and help out whenever
and wherever I can.
THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE to make this season so special for
me as a priest and for yourselves as contemporary Disciples of Christ. I believe
more than ever that the best way we can emulate the Risen Lord in our life is to be
a person of gratitude, courage, and vision. Thanks for letting me share my vision
with all of you these last 18 years. And once again, Happy Easter!
(A podcast of this week’s reflection is available on the St. James website and
mobile website.)

THANKS A TON!
In fact thanks 3 tons. Because of your support of the Blue Bag SVDP Lenten food drive for Catholic
ChariƟes , we collected over 3 TON's of food (approx 6,500 lbs.) for the Catholic ChariƟes Des Plaines food
pantry! The generous support of the St. James community conƟnues to amaze us. The food collected filled
the pantry from floor to ceiling, with food leŌ over. I would also like to thank the high school students that
stepped up and helped us. This project would not have been possible to complete without their energy and
muscle.
The St. James Society of St. Vincent DePaul is truly blessed to
represent such a great ChrisƟan Community.
Once again, thank you for your conƟnued support of our
mission.

St. James Parishioner Visits FCN (Foundation for Children in Need) in India
My name is Sue Nue and I am a St. James Parishioner. On 1/17/2013
I left Chicago for India – a huge leap out of my comfort zone. I came to learn
that I hadn’t needed to be anxious as Dr. Geetha and Tom took excellent care
of me and my fellow travelers.
We were in India during the 10th Anniversary celebrations for the
Foundation for Children in Need. We were introduced to all of the tremendous
accomplishments achieved by the foundation – building a school with boarding
facilities, building a home for the elderly, sponsoring students at a variety of
schools, sponsoring young orphan boys who are HIV positive or who have
AIDS who live in a group home, sponsoring a home for physically challenged
children, sponsoring college students, teaching young women to be seamstresses, providing medical care to residents of tribal agricultural villages.
All of these accomplishments
FCN Welcomes sponsors from the USA
flow from Dr. Geetha and Tom’s
desire to minister to the poorest of the poor.
My husband asked me, “What was your favorite part of the trip?”
I answered, “Every experience!”
One experience does stand out: At the celebration on 1/23/2013, in
Porumamilla. I met Anitha, the college student that I sponsored. Last
October, she successfully completed her education to become a Registered Nurse. Meeting her face to face was indescribable – She made a
two plus hour trip by bus and taxi to attend the celebration and meet me.
She repeatedly thanked me for sponsoring her. But, it was I who needed
to thank her for the opportunity of being her sponsor. I am a recently
retired RN; as my nursing career had drawn to a close, another woman,
Anitha, began her nursing career.
My mother is also a FCN sponsor. I met Sr. Jythishna Devi, whom
Sue meets Rangaswami Raju Kapp
my mother had sponsored. Sister recently professed her final vows.

friends, aunts and uncles and even grandparents! Our guest professor is the Very Reverend Paul Stein, Rector of St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University.
It’s an opportunity to have Mass and then learn about philosophy
through the eyes of some of the greatest thinkers of all time. The
5 sessions include: What is Philosophy and Why is it Important,
Socrates’ Apology, Plato’s Cave, Aristotle’s Metaphysics and
Aquinas’ Transubstantiation.
The sessions will take place each Tuesday in April, beginning April
2, from 10am-12pm at Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church in Elk
Grove Village.
Register Today! Call Fr. Mike Scherschel at St. Joseph College
Seminary at (773) 973-8848 or email: mscherschel@luc.edu
Please include your name and the number of people you plan to
bring, including the ages of any teens. There will be an area set
aside for small children outside of the church, but parents will be

Interview with an Exodus Trekker
It's All about Family for Our Deacon, A Stay-at-Home Dad
On a nippy February afternoon, Matthew M. Hahn, 48, could be seen
fast pedaling his bicycle down Harvard Avenue. Several yards behind him,
also on bikes, were his son and two daughters who, a mile ago, Dad had met
as they left grammar school.
Matt, a slim, six-foot-one-inch former U.S. Marine Corps sergeant,
wheeled his bike into the home garage, soon followed by the kids, who, unlike
their father, were breathing a bit hard. This caravan-on-wheels has been a
family practice for almost nine years, ever since Matt, one of five deacons at
St. James Catholic Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois, chose to become a stay-at-home dad. His employed wife gladly
went along with the decision. ……
(Now...a quicker way to go directly to this interview on the internet….)
THIS INTERVIEW, along with several other inspiring ones of our St. James parishioners, will continue on our new and amazing
parish web page all during April. To quickly ( and easily ) go to this interview, go to the ADDRESS BAR (not the " Search " bar which appears on the homepage of your internet service provider ) and type in: http://exodustrekkers.blogspot.com/ . (The address bar is that
narrow, sometimes long, window which appears at the very top of your internet home page. ) Or, you can go to our parish home page at
"stjamesah.org" and then type in " Exodus Trekkers " ( or another key word ) in the small "Search " window at the top. )
We support in prayer those who serve our country in the armed forces….
