When she cried out for me, I quickly dressed her younger sister and we went to the hospital for stitches. She was in pain and crying when the doctor injected the anesthetic into the hand to numb the pain. With a firm, but quiet voice he looked at her and said, “Katy, does it still hurt?” She stopped all at once and said with a voice of wonder, “No.” He proceeded to stitch up the thumb and congratulated her on being brave. She thanked him and then talked about him for the rest of the day. I still remember the surprised look when she finally realized her thumb no longer hurt. She didn’t know that the anesthetic had taken effect because she expected to still be in pain. The ten lepers who met Jesus knew they couldn’t approach anyone and they had undoubtedly called out to others to help them. When Jesus told them to show themselves to the priests, they went their way not expecting to be cured and still deep in their isolation. Some inner voice made one leper suddenly aware that he had been made clean. He stopped, full of wonder. The priest would still have to inspect him before he could return to his community, but his desire to look at Jesus one more time and give thanks for his mercy had to come first. We don’t know what made him so mindful of his healing, but his response inspires us. How has Jesus touched and healed you? How will you thank him, and who will you tell? Mary Katharine Deeley U sundaybulletins@liguori.org U First Reading Exodus 17:8-13 (147C) When Moses raised his arms to God in prayer, the battle went well. So Aaron and Hur supported his arms, lest the attackers defeat Israel. When they got tired, they used a rock to keep his arms up. By sunset, Israel won the fight. Second Reading 2 Timothy 3:14—4:2 Paul urged Timothy to remain faithful to sacred Scripture because God inspired it. God’s inspired word, the source of wisdom in Christ, helps people learn goodness and holiness. Gospel Luke 18:1-8 Jesus taught a lesson about the power of persistent prayer by telling the story of a pushy widow who wore down a corrupt judge by continually demanding her rights. The judge issued a settlement in her favor, lest she do him in. A LESSON ON PRAYER The reader of this story is easiy caught up in the plea of the widow for a just hearing from the judge. Her perisitence is admirable and Jesus turns the encounter into a lesson on prayer. The honest of the dishonest and unwilling judge are contrasted with the just and speedy response by God to the pleas of the “chosen ones.” Jesus ststes that such prayer comes from fatith. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Please join the Respect Life Ministry each First Saturday of the month by attending the 7:30AM Mass, then travelling to the abortion clinic in Montclair to pray. RELIC CHAPEL MEMORIAL CANDLES FOR THE WEEK OF October 9, 2016 Intention Ann T. Schreck Stanley Baskette Saint St. Patrick St. Jude Given by Phil Schreck Al & Ann Lemme STEWARDSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” LUKE 17:18 Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you. Word of Life… “If you know someone…who has had an abortion, express your sympathy for her loss. Assure her of God’s unconditional love, and encourage her to seek healing and forgiveness.” www.HopeAfterAbortion.org — “Bridges of Mercy for Post-Abortion Healing,” www.goo.gl/MpC7RG USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities This month the Catholic Church celebrates Respect for Human Life, a time to reflect on the specialness and sanctity of all human life, from those yet born to those facing the end of their earthly journeys. Pope Francis during his visit to the United States last year spoke powerfully of the gift of creation by a loving God and the need to defend all life regardless of circumstances. We as Catholics, recipients of many gifts and blessing are called to be courageous advocates of the sanctity of life. Jesus, throughout his ministry, proclaimed his Gospel of love and life, speaking of the beauty of the human person, even the most crippled or marginalized. He reached out to everyone, from the very old to the young children. His message was clear, our God created us out of love and we must respond as individuals and as a society by taking affirmative action to assure all humanity is protected and prized. The Congress of the United States last year failed to enact legislation banning late-term abortions (abortions performed beyond twenty weeks) except those to protect the life of the mother. All but six other countries have laws prohibiting such abortions and it is a sad commentary on the moral values of our lawmakers that they refuse to enact such a humane law. Politics over a true sense of humanity! It appears some of us have lost our moral and ethical compass. This is why it is important for faithful Catholics and all people of faith to speak out against the devaluation of human life. For many people it is simply a question of convenience. What is easier for me? Why should I allow a baby to affect my lifestyle, my full enjoyment of life? Sadly, it is all about me rather than about living according to God’s sacred law. Over the past forty-three years since the Supreme Court of the United States ruling on Roe v. Wade, over fifty-eight million abortions have occurred in the United States alone! The number is staggering and the devastation to the human spirit beyond comprehension. When we do not value life in the womb, we also do not value human life at all stages of development. As science and medicine progresses we become more aware that the fetus is truly a human person capable of feeling and awareness, much more than just a blob of cells. We cannot remain silent. We cannot allow ourselves to become indifferent to the slaughter of innocent lives. Pope Francis calls upon each one of us to be active disciples of Christ. Let us pray and speak out that the inherent dignity of all human life is respected and safeguarded. It is our call to discipleship. October 9, 2016 – Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time #621 page 5 OFFICE OF FAMILY LIFE MINISTRIES October is SIDS, Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month NEW HOPE, INC. A collection will be taken at that time. Please be generous! New Hope is an alternative to abortion program mentoring moms during their pregnancies and afterwards for three years as they seek further education, help with their rent and/or child care, stability, and a meaningful faith journey. For more information call (201) 408-4726. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY The Respect Life Ministry and the Knights of Columbus will be selling "Roses for Life" appliqués at the doors of the church this weekend, October 8 & 9 after all Masses for $1. The proceeds will benefit Birthright of Bergen County, a non-profit charitable organization that provides love and support to women facing unplanned pregnancies. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY 40 DAYS FOR LIFE-FALL CAMPAIGN A “40 Days for Life” effort of prayer and fasting, organized by LIFENET, for an end to abortion in America continues through Sunday, November 6th. We are asking people to come and pray for 1 hour per week between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM on the public thoroughfare outside the Social Security Building in Montclair, 396 Bloomfield Ave. (across the street from a high-volume abortion center.) For more information or to sign-up to volunteer, call Lisa at 973-769-4422 or email lisahartpt@yahoo.com. Prayer saves lives. OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY AND RESPECT LIFE… Monday, October 10 Eucharistic Adoration in the LaSalle Center from 9:30am to 5pm. Pro-Life Meditations will be recited Each day, in areas across the world, expectant moms will feel their baby’s first kick; parents will listen to their newborn’s first cry; and families will celebrate the birthday of a healthy baby. Also day, 13 babies will be lost to SIDS and other sudden, unexpected infant deaths; more than 70 new parents will have listened sadly to their stillborn baby’s silence; and countless lives will be lost to miscarriage and other causes of infant death.. In particular, October 15th is called “National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day”. On this day in many parts of the world, people will light a candle and offer prayers in memory of those lost babies, born and unborn. In solidarity let us join together and do the same here in our homes. If we light a candle and let it burn for at least 1 hour, there will be a continual wave of light across the world all day. May these children celebrate in heaven in the comfort of our Savior’s arms. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM We are praying for babies whose mothers are contemplating abortion. Information will be placed at the doors of the Church along with prayer cards this weekend, October 8 & 9. Please choose a name for a boy or girl that you would like to “spiritually” adopt and then write it on the back of the card. Keep this prayer card and on a separate paper give the name of the baby to Patty Howard, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Lyndhurst. You may also drop it in the collection basket marked “Spiritual Adoption Program” and the names will be given to Patty. The names of these precious babies will be entered in one book. We ask that you pray for your baby for nine months. Then on Saturday evening, May 13, 2017, we will meet at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Lyndhurst for a “Living Rosary.” At that time, we will present a rose to our Blessed Mother for each baby written in our book that we hope was saved from abortion. And maybe someday, when we get to heaven, we will be gifted to embrace the baby that we have prayed for while here on earth. God Bless You! As an accommodation to those people wishing to purchase a Mass Card who are unable to do so in person during the revised office hours, they can call the Parish Office during regular business hours and reserve a Mass by telephone.
