Oregon Coast Wineries
By Judy Fleagle
he Oregon Coast is
known for its uncrowded
beaches, rugged headlands,
charming towns, and—more and
more—for its unique wines. There are
only seven wineries, and they range from
one-man operations to slightly larger.
Three are located on the northern half
of the coast, and four are nestled within
Coos County on the southern half.
Shallon Winery, located in Astoria, is
a one-man operation where Paul van der
Veldt has been making fruit and chocolate
wines for the past 28 years. Ask about his
Chocolate–Orange wine. His tasting room
is open 365 days a year, and visitors may
also visit his lab and manufacturing room.

Nehalem Bay Winery, located a
mile off Highway 101 on Hwy 53 in
Mohler, has been producing wines since
1974 and hosts many cultural activities. The winery offers red, white, sweet,
and specialty wines. The tasting room
is open every day and a second tasting
room—the Cave at Depoe Bay—is also
open daily. (503-368-9463[Nehalem],

Flying Dutchman Winery, located
in Otter Rock, started producing wines as
a “micro” winery at the Inn at Otter Crest
in 1997. Now they have their own facility overlooking the Pacific, where they
produce reds, whites, and dessert wines.
Recently they opened a tasting room in
Astoria next to the Cannery Pier Hotel.
Both sites are open daily. Ask about their
award-winning Pinot Noir, Syrah, and
Cabernet Franc. (541-765-2553[Otter
Rock], 503-325-8110[Astoria]; dutchmanwinery.com)
Old Bridge Winery, located on
Hwy 42 in Remote, is best known for
its Cranberry wine. It also has Sweet
Blackberry, Dry Blackberry, and their
popular raspberry, as well as grape
varietals. The new Sparkling Cranberry
Champagne is fast becoming a favorite as
well as their Zinfandel Port. The tasting
room is open daily except Mondays May 1
through December 31 or by appointment.

out, and the second, a 2006 Baco Noir
just released, is selling well. Tours of
the winery with barrel tastings are
available, and the tasting room is open
May through October or by appointment.

Sea Mist Winery, located on 20
acres of cranberry bogs south of Bandon,
was Oregon’s first cranberry winery.
Their unique naturally fermented wines
include Cranberry, Semi-Dry Cranberry, Cranberry–Raspberry, and the
new Cranberry–Blueberry. A tasting
room will be open soon. Call for tours.

Old Coyote Winery, located in Myrtle
Point, began with 100 gallons in 2004 and
by 2007 was up to nearly 600 gallons of
berry wine. They use various combinations of cranberries, huckleberries, and
blackberries. Their new Cranberry–
Raspberry wine sold out last year, and this
year they’ve produced their first barrel of
grape wine. Tastings are by appointment.

hv Cellars (previously Hawks View
Winery & Wild Goose Vineyards) is
located at Milepost 11 on the Powers
Highway (access by Hwy 42). The winery
began producing grape varietals and fruit
wines in 2001. The first estate wine, a 2006
Chardonnay released December 2007, sold
