Digitization is the force that will drive business transformation for
the next decade. Big data, global networks, and the continued
rise of automation are revolutionalising business models,
organizational structures, and customer interactions at
exponential speeds. Human capabilities, their mindset and behavior are adapting at a
much slower pace. Many companies have up to five generations
working together. This situation yields wonderful learning
opportunities, but there is no doubt that it is complicated.
On the one hand, people in generations Y and Z understand the
utility of, and integrate, emerging technologies with greater ease
than most people older than they are. On the other hand, there is
no doubt that these same younger people bring new values to
the workplace, many of which challenge existing organizational
cultures. Thus the age-old conflict between youth and
experience is heightened. Many company surveys report that
people of all ages and at all organizational levels are experiencing
unprecedented levels of insecurity which are, in turn, negatively
impacting personal and organizational well-being.
New technologies genuinely threaten people and businesses. At
the same time, they offer vast opportunities to both. This is “creative destruction” (Schumpeter) and this is the environment in
which today’s business leaders are working, whether they want
to or not. Tried and tested leadership approaches will not
develop organizations with cultures that are agile and innovative
enough to succeed.
