Annual Report
Dear Library Friends,
I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with leading
your Community Library at a time when libraries worldwide
face unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Also, I
am delighted to become part of this vibrant and embracing
community. Since my arrival in July 2013, I have come to
appreciate what an outstanding library we have.
At the Community Library, we are developing ideas to
make the Library an even more vital cultural resource for
you. Our new mission is bringing information, ideas and individuals together to
enhance the cultural life of the community. The success of our efforts, however,
depends in large part on you, your neighbors and your friends. As a private,
not-for-profit organization, we receive no dedicated tax monies. And, contrary
to what some people might think, our Gold Mine stores cover less than one-half
of our costs.
So, please, help us to remain the extraordinary resource that so many of you
have told me you consider the Community Library to be. Give generously to this
Annual Appeal. Remember that no gift is too small, and all gifts are appreciated,
greatly. Thank you for the opportunity to join your community and to lead your
library,

Cultural Programming has become the Community
Library’s signature offering. Since Sun Valley attracts the world’s top
business, financial and scholarly leaders—as well as celebrities—the
Library has the opportunity to connect these individuals to residents
and visitors through its lectures, presentations and film screenings. So
far this year, more than 4,000 people attended over 100 programs.
The Information Systems Department strives to
bridge the “digital divide” in our community through its 30 public
access computers, free public Wi-Fi, and iPads and Nooks, all
backed by a 100 Mb/s, fiber-optic internet connection. In 2013,
our IS Outreach became the “hottest” hallmark of the Library; class
offerings grew to 13, plus four hours a week of free “Office Hours”
providing answers to our patrons’ toughest tech questions.
The Regional History Department (RHD) is
the foundation upon which our community’s past rests. Home
to tens of thousands of archival items, RHD is the definitive
source on the history of the Wood River Valley. This year, we
launched our online database of images, documents and oral
histories at rhd.thecommunitylibrary.org, cataloged 39 years of
Sun Valley Magazine and received a trove of digital images from
the private collection of Sun Valley photographer Bob Lee.
The Collections of the Community Library feature more
than 130,000 items including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, Nooks,
iPads, newspapers, periodicals, online subscriptions and more. This
is the heart of our library services. By mid September, CLA librarians
conducted ¼-million check-ins, checkouts, holds and renewals to
our 15,000 active cardholders from all over the world.
3
The Children’s Library is committed to enhancing the
community through programming, education and quality literature
for kids. Our collection includes juvenile talking books, children’s
magazines, family and educational films, foreign language books,
music CDs and reference materials as well as fiction and nonfiction
titles. In 2013, nearly 200 children read for more than 100,000
minutes during our seven-week Summer Reading Program!
The Young Adult (YA) Library provides a quality
collection of informational texts, talking books and films related to
Young Adult themes. The YA Library also offers an appealing study
space to promote reading, writing and literature for “Tween” library
users. In 2013, the Young Adult Library established a Book Club
and Young Writer’s Workshop with participants from the Wood River
Schools, The Community School, Sage School and visiting teens.
The Reference Room is a vibrant community space
that provides free access to a travel collection, language learning
materials, 20 public Internet computers, in-house use of iPads,
a Business Workstation and an Assistive Technology Workstation
for people with disabilities. The Departure Lounge features over
1,800 travel guides, travelogues, pictorials and DVDs. The
Library also implemented a new online information guide: the Job
Hunter’s Toolkit in 2013!
The Gold Mine Thrift Store is where the story of
the Community Library began nearly 60 years ago. Since then, it
has become an invaluable retail resource for the community with
fashions, books, housewares, electronics, sports gear, children’s
wear, music, shoes, furniture and artwork. In March 2013, Gold
Mine Consign joined the Community Library family. The Gold Mine
stores served nearly 200,000 shoppers in 2013, grossing more
than $1 million in sales*.
*Net profits meet less than one-half of the Library’s operating costs.

> Moving Forward
The Community Library is Moving Forward for You! The Community Library
has served the intellectual and cultural needs of the Wood River Valley for nearly
60 years. Since its inception, when a group of forward-thinking women founded
it in 1955, the Library has encouraged individuals’ educational and personal growth,
and enriched the community through its collections, the legendary Gold Mine
Thrift Store and grassroots fundraising. That visionary approach continues today
with the Library’s stimulating programs, technology services and community focus.
Our goal is to be THE “go-to” place for everyone in the community! Here’s what
we want to do for YOU:

technology adoption
in Library collections,
programs and services

Our Children’s librarians
visit Blaine County Schools
offering presentations to teachers
with collection materials that
support the Idaho Core Standards
for student learning. This outreach
keeps teachers and parents informed
about the Library’s offerings in
support of local education efforts.
In the Children’s Library, outreach
includes the annual Fiesta para los
Niños, Tuesday Science Time and
both English and Spanish Story Time
Saturdays.
Our Technology Outreach
program, commonly known
as 'Tech Office Hours',
provides residents and visitors with
the expertise of one of our
Information Systems specialists
who answers any and all technical
questions about iPads, iPhones and
most personal technology devices.
This popular outreach provides a
gateway to greater understanding of
the evolving technological world.
Cultural Programming
has become a hallmark of
the Community Library . . .
This complimentary service enriches
residents’ and visitors’ intellectual
and cultural lives with a wide range
of speakers and presentations. It is
where the community conversation
begins.

From the Hunger Coalition
I was so impressed with your
hospitality and positive energy.
You made us feel very welcome
and cared for—and the space was
perfect for our needs.
regarding our Library Staff
Every time I walk into the Library, I
have an immediate sense of warmth.
Your staff is the best, period. They
are friendly, competent, and have a
sense of humor. I am reminded by
your organization repeatedly why I
feel wonderful to be living here.
From A valley resident
We recently moved to Hailey, but
still can’t imagine life without the
Library’s many joys and glories,
and over the 20+ years we’ve lived
in the valley we have indeed led
many friends, family members and
visitors through your portals—and
shall continue to do so.
About the Beaver Creek Fire
Thanks for what you all do at the
Library. You were a source of comfort
and information during tough times
for many.
Quiet Spaces
There are plenty of nice quiet
places in the Library. I personally
think a friendly atmosphere is the
most important thing (after finding
information and borrowing books),
and the Community Library is the
most welcoming there is. Keep up
the good work!

About our Summer
Reading Program
We have had parent after parent
after parent tell us that this
program and its incentive made
a huge difference in their child’s
summer reading this year. One boy
in particular was so motivated by
the possibility of winning a bike
that he, according to his brother,
“read and read and read” and that
“he didn’t even like to read.”
About Our Technology
Classes
Today a lady went out of her way
to come up to us at the Circulation
Desk to let us know that Paul has
changed her life. She said she was
afraid to even turn on her iPad until
attending these classes and now
she is taking it on business trips
and doing business, listening to
music and all sorts of good things
that she couldn’t before. She said it
has literally made her happier and
more successful in her business.
From Dr. Paul Tucker,
Ph.D. and one of America’s
foremost authorities
on Claude Monet and
Impressionism
Thank you for your wonderful
attention to all of the details for the
talk last evening. Your publicity
efforts in particular were nothing
short of remarkable and they
were clearly rewarded; what an
overwhelming turnout! It was truly
gratifying to have so many people
there. And then to have such a
warm response from them; all was
heartwarming indeed. I trust that
M. Monet was equally pleased!
