This is changing, however, as Jewish communal leaders have realized that JCCs serve as entry portals for Jews who are connecting for the first time with the Jewish community. That being the case, Rabbi Fenton’s job will be to teach Judaism and conduct programs for the JCC membership that help them to appreciate the heritage that is theirs and to assist them in deepening their participation in Jewish communal life. He hopes to build links with the local synagogues and to encourage unaffiliated Jews to join congregations where they and their children can worship and more fully learn and experience Torah. Rabbi Fenton has already made contact with Daniel Pressman, Rabbi of the Conservative shul in San Jose and son of Rabbi Jack and Margie, who is one of the leading rabbis in Northern California, and he looks forward to establishing cordial relationships with his other colleagues in the area. My dear friend, Rabbi Joshua Fenton was ordained by the Rabbinical Assembly and the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies on May 21, 2007. Many of us have come to know him as Yoshi, but from now on we shall refer to him as Rabbi Fenton. During the past year he ably served Temple Beth Am as our Rabbinic Intern, and it has been my honor and pleasure to be his mentor. As Intern he assisted Rabbi Susan Leider in conducting the Neshamah Minyan High Holiday services and coordinated and taught at our Daily Minyan Shabbat Mincha – Maariv program. Rabbi Fenton proved to be a wonderful teacher of Talmud and Midrash and a fine preacher. He quickly endeared himself to the members of our congregation, especially those who daven in the Shabbat afternoon minyan, which includes a number of our senior lay leaders and rabbis. He also frequently Rabbi Fenton, his wife Claire and their led BAIT Tefillah services during Rabbi Rabbi Joshua Fenton twins will soon be leaving L.A. and resetNetter’s sabbatical leave and preached in tling in the Bay Area. As we say shalom to the Shir Hadash service in the Sanctuary. Rabbi Fenton will them and bid them farewell, we also say Todah Rabbah to tell you that his work at Beth Am enabled him to hone his Rabbi Fenton for all the personal and spiritual gifts he has many God-given skills and provided him with innumer- given us. We have been blessed over the past number of able opportunities to learn first hand about how a Jewish years to have had a group of outstanding Ziegler students community functions and how to respond to the needs of serve our shul as Rabbinic Interns, and Rabbi Fenton has its constituents. continued that tradition of excellence. We pray that Rabbi Rabbi Fenton is deeply devoted to finding contemporary meaning in the ancient traditions of our people, and he is very capable of applying the wisdom of Torah to the subtleties of everyday human experience. Judaism, for him, is a constantly evolving corpus of Divine wisdom. He is a seeker of God and a very spiritual person who is eager to help others achieve an awareness of God. He has a caring and empathetic soul and readily wins the trust of the people with whom he works. He is also deeply committed to reaching out to Jews who find themselves on the margins of the Jewish community and who need guidance in making their way into active Jewish life. With that in mind, Rabbi Fenton applied for and was offered the position of Rabbi of the Jewish Community Center in San Jose, CA. He accepted the post and in so doing was among the first in his class at Ziegler to receive a position. JCCs historically have not had rabbis on staff because they typically have offered programming that was less focused on the religious side of Jewish life and more on social and Fenton and his family find great joy and satisfaction in San Jose, and we look forward to shepping much nachas from the wonderful contributions to the American Jewish community he will make. Tzeitkhem l’shalom haverim y’karim; go in peace dear friends. Rabbi Joel Rembaum Welcome Danya Ruttenberg Even as Rabbi Fenton leaves us, we welcome our new Ziegler Rabbinic Intern, Danya Ruttenberg, who will soon return from her year of study in Israel, get married (Mazal Tov!) and then join us during the summer to pick up where Rabbi Fenton left off. You will read more about her in the next Kol Ha’am, and when you meet her be sure to give her a warm hello. I know she will be a great addition to the Beth Am staff, and I look forward to working with her in the coming months. Kol ha’aM Temple Beth Am FROM OUR PRESIDENT Shul Year-End Recap . . . While it is hard to believe I am commencing my second year as President, it seemed a good time to take a brief look back on some the events, work, and special projects that took place these past twelve months. We should all be proud of our committed professional staff, our Executive Committee and Board, and all of the wonderful volunteers who give of their valuable time to make sure our busy shul programs and services run smoothly. For those of you who attended the May 20th Annual Meeting, some of this will sound familiar, but it bears repeating as much has transpired: * We welcomed Rabbi Susan Leider as a wonderful new addition to our rabbinic staff; * A stellar year of programming: From our new outreach efforts for joint Purim and Shavuot Tikkun programs with some of our local shuls (i.e. Ikar, Nashuva, Egal, and Pico Shtibl), to an inspired Master Teacher Lecture Series, to collecting needed items for Israeli soldiers, to our Bait Midrash classes that included new learning sessions with our Rabbis to prepare for the High Holidays, to a Passover Hunger project that doubled its participation and fundraising from the previous year by providing needed funds to Israeli organizations dealing with serious issues of hunger in Israel, to a joyous Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration. Much thanks to Rabbi Rembaum, Rabbi Netter, Rabbi Leider, Hazzan Lipton, our VP of Programming Sandra Braun, and our Israel Committee, chaired by Ron Alberts, for your efforts in making this such a rich programmatic year for our community; * We embarked upon an ambitious but necessary strategic planning phase for our congregation - and to date hundreds have participated. Special thanks to Strategic Planning Committee Chairs Jill Sperling and Mike Cohn, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, our Board, and our members for supporting and taking on this important project for our shul’s future. We will continue to update the congregation on the planning process. * Our By-Laws are being updated by our able Chair, Melissa Berenbaum, and a dedicated (and detailed) By Laws Review Committee; * Larry Miller, VP of Budget and Finance, and his Budget Committee presented the budget, as promised, earlier than ever before, enabling our financial planning to meet to our operational needs; * We received funding from the Department of Homeland Security and upgraded security for our entire facility; * The first-ever group of TBA members traveled together to the AIPAC conference, chaired by Fran Grossman; * TBA’s first Family Mission to Israel traveled together during the summer of 2006 under the leadership of Executive Director Sheryl Goldman; * Shir Shabbat, a Shabbat morning Service for families with young children, was launched by Rabbi Susan Leider and Francine Farkas; * There was record attendance at the Ramah Shabbaton with Rabbi Netter, chaired by Stacey Datnow; * The House & Grounds Committee began the “greening of TBA” with the installation of energy efficient lighting and window film in the School and Temple buildings; * Together with Pressman Academy, we are getting ready to launch a new and improved look for our website - thank you to VP Membership Robert Ring and our Executive Director, Sheryl Goldman for spearheading this effort on the shul’s behalf; * Our Education Cabinet led by our VP of Education, Susan Green, our Educational Director, Rabbi Mitch Malkus and all of his devoted staff continued their dedicated work to make all of our Pressman schools an example of excellence in Jewish Education. * We continued to address our shul and school space issues, including construction on the Corning property, and we will be sharing some additional exciting details of these efforts in the coming year; * And of course we celebrate Shabbat, Daily Minyan, and holidays as a vibrant, committed, and participatory community! While the above list is by no means exhaustive, it is indicative of a productive year, a busy shul, and, of course, more to do . . . Once again, I thank each and every person who makes our shul buzz with activity--we are a true community and you are all an inspiration. Looking forward to the year ahead! Vivian Alberts TOWN HALL Strategic Planning Focus Group At Temple Beth Am Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. All members of the congregation – married, single, new members, long-time members, young and young-at-heart are invited to help shape the future of our congregation. As I write these words only two weeks have passed since my return from the first part of my Sabbatical. I have daily been touched by the warm and enthusiastic greetings that I have received from members of our community. Most of these recent interactions have fallen into two distinct categories: “Didn’t you just begin your Sabbatical? It seemed like you left just a few days ago!”– or, conversely, “It’s wonderful to have you back! It seemed like you were gone forever!!” From my perspective, this first, three-month period seemed to fly by at breakneck speed, as I traveled back and forth across the country, visiting eleven different congregations on the east coast, in the midwest and southwest, and attending five different types of services (Kabbalat Shabbat, Shabbat morning, Shabbat Mincha/Ma’ariv, Erev Purim and Erev Pesach), where I attended services and conferred with colleagues in our sister synagogues. Even though each shul that I chose to visit, by design, was a large Conservative congregation (plus one neighborhood Orthodox shul), many with seemingly vibrant musical programs and a wonderful professional staff, my experiences as an ordinary davener, not as Clergy, provided me with an extremely different worship experience in each of these various communities. During my preparation for my Sabbatical I had specifically requested of my Cantorial and Rabbinic colleagues that they not call upon me in a professional capacity because I wished to remain “incognito” as it were (though honors were offered, I respectfully declined in each of the venues), there to daven from a congregant’s point of view. My self imposed limitation in the services, as a regular davener and not as one of the primary facilitators, was integral to my experience in each of the venues that I visited and provided me a unique, and in some instances, eye-opening, perspective that will undoubtedly continue to influence the way I view my role as Hazzan of Temple Beth Am for many years to come. This time then was a precious gift, for to be able to experience the Conservative movement in the context of what may seem mundane to the average shul goer (of course, not at Temple Beth Am, though how many of us really venture beyond the comfort zone of our community on a regular basis?), presented to me a unique vanatage point of life on the other side of the bima. In sum, the ultimate effect of my visits in each of these extraordinary shuls was for me a revelation, and more significantly perhaps, they affirmed, as I suspected that they would, the truly singular nature of our Temple Beth Am community and its diverse davening community. In each of the congregations that I visited I had the opportunity to meet, confer and exchange ideas and impressions with numerous professional and lay congregational leaders. Of course, each of my Cantorial and Rabbinic colleagues are aware of the vibrancy of our TBA community, of its reputation for diversity and inclusion, and they were especially curious to hear about the changes that we have made in our worship venues over the past year and a half, especially in our Sanctuary’s Shir Hadash minyan, which remains unique, a model service among Conservative congregations. What continues to make Shir Hadash exceptional is its unwavering commitment to our coveted liturgical and musical traditions that are fused within a contemporary musical framework (one whose basis relies on tonal music, not on modal music, from which nusach hat’fillah is based), an accompanied service that is truly interactive, whose effects have not only enhanced participation, but have also intensified individual davener’s spiritual experience. To date I have not witnessed another Shabbat morning service in the United States that incorporates all of the elements of nusach hat’fillah together with an interactive, supportive musical accompaniment, and the kind of congregational participation that fully maintains and integrates the liturgical authenticity that we have created in Shir Hadash. Even though some of the services that I attended made use of a variety of musical accompaniments (some quite exotic), these services were not organically, in a musical sense, related to nusach hat’fillah, nor did they have as their main goal the idea that communal participation might be heightened; instead they were often presentational and entertainment-like in their format and intention. Although I recognized each of these disparate elements and qualities in each of these services, the unification of them within a unified whole was lacking. I boast, proudly, that Temple Beth Am can be extremely proud of the potent synergy that exists in our congregation. During the next several months I will begin to share with you many of my impressions and experiences from my Sabbatical through regular, monthly KHA articles that I hope you will find both interesting and enlightening. Embedded within the macro topic that I want to explore, I will consider the following: What is the range of possibilities in terms of what the individual davener might expect to find when they walk into a Conservative congregation for Shabbat services? I will share my thoughts and impressions about who I believe attends shul on Shabbat, and address not only why they attend, but perhaps why they do not. I will explore and further flesh out the role of those facilitating services from the amud as well as the role of those who enhance the worship experience from within the kahal. My goal in sharing these thoughts with you is not merely to offer a comparison, or to proffer criticism, but instead to perhaps draw upon my experiences as a catalyst for personal and institutional self examination, with a goal toward strengthening our already thriving TBA communal davening experiences. I look forward to my continuation of this work in the concluding three-month portion of my Sabbatical (October 6 – January 6). Several of our own TBA congregants with whom I have recently spoken have asked, “So, what was it like to walk into another Conservative congregation in New York, or Chicago, or Houston, or Los Angeles, and know that you were not going to be leading services that morning?” In addition to not serving as shaliach tsibur, the congregation’s representative in prayer, I was also not responsible for making sure that others who participate in leading portions of the services on Shabbat (such as B’nei Mitzvah or other lay people) were prepared, proficient, emotionally whole and completely supported, both before, during and after the service. At first, I must admit, I was completely disoriented. Decades of patterns of behavior, minus a few weeks per year of family vacation, are not easily modified. After getting over the initial shock, and going through mild-to-severe withdrawal from the malady of “acute bima-itis,” I looked around me to see those individuals who comprised these congregations. At those moments, I consciously released all of my expectations and preconceptions about what the service was going to be, and immersed myself in the kahal, allowing them to guide my experience. Continued on Page 7 Kol ha’aM Temple Beth Am KOL HA’NESHAMA: Voice of the Soul A midrash was told in the name of Rabbi Meir: When the Israelites came to Mount Sinai to receive God’s word, God was not willing to give them the Torah without proof that they would cherish this precious gift. God said to Israel: “Give Me guarantors that you will treasure My Torah.” . . .The Israelites said to God: “If You will give us Your Torah, we will offer You our children.” And God said, “Since your offer Me your children as your guarantors, I will give you My Torah.” —Shir Ha Shirim Rabbah 1:4 This midrash demonstrates what so many of us see everyday at Temple Beth Am and at Pressman Academy: the children of this community are the guarantors of Torah and of the future. As the school year comes to an end around the city, TBA children will be engaging in many summer activities- camp, special trips with family and some lazy days sandwiched between fun activities. But summer is also the perfect time to re-connect with Shabbat through our year-round program - Shabbat Yeladim. Shabbat Yeladim (Shabbat Kids) happens every Shabbat morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. during every season of the year. In this program, kids ages 6 months to 6th grade, enjoy activities and services geared to their specific age group. Kids who experience this program on a regular basis understand that Shabbat is a vibrant and integral part of being Jewish. Children who frequent this program during the year experience an easier transition into the High Holiday Children’s program because they are familiar with Shabbat Yeladim. By bringing our Shabbat Morning Learner’s Minyan with Rabbi Susan Leider – June 23 On June 23, we will meet at 9:45 a.m. in the Pilch Hall to pray Psukei D’Zimra, the introductory portion of the Shabbat morning service. At 10:15 a.m., we will meet in the Lainer Libray to learn more about Psukei D’Zimra together. If you would like to receive a monthly email reminder with location, start time and topic, please email dgaines@tbala.org to be added to our Learner’s Minyan email list. For any questions about this service, please contact Rabbi Susan Leider at 310-652-7354, x230. June 21 - Ruth’s Circle – not for women only! Facilitated by Rabbi Susan Leider and Dr. Karen Kass Please join us for the next meeting of Ruth’s Circle at 7:30 p.m. in the Lainer Library. Ruth’s Circle offers a safe space to learn together and to discuss issues related to Judaism by Choice. The program is open to members and non-members alike. There are no “reservations” required in advance and the staff always welcomes children. So roll out of bed on a warm summer morning and bring the kids to shul! This demonstrates to your kids that you cherish Torah and you cherish them! As I visited this diverse group of congregations a series of recurring questions emerged and enabled me to understand why my experience was as it was: Who were the people around me in the kahal? Why were they here on this particular Shabbat? When I walked into shul was the choice I made regarding the location of my seat a factor in my congregational experience? How much did my knowledge about the service–the structure, the musical forms, the language, the rituals that accompanied each of the various liturgical components, as well as my ability to anticipate the liturgical format and rhythms of the associate davening–influence those around me? As a congregant what was my relationship with the Clergy, facilitators and the participants on the bima? How did the participation of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah child and his/her family influence the flow and the aesthetic of the service and of my own davening experience? How did my familiarity, or lack of it in terms of a particular synagogue’s liturgical and/or musical traditions affect my ability to “participate,” actively or reflectively? In those congregations where musical accompaniment was used, did it enhance or detract from my tefillah experience, and if so, how? Did I feel liturgically and spiritually satisfied during and at the conclusion of services? How did I feel as a stranger in the community? What was the communal experience like for me as a stranger after services were over? Was the sum total of my Shabbat experience ultimately more dependent upon personal or communal factors? My response to each of these questions varied depending upon the shul I visited, the personality of the congregation and the lay leaders and/or Clergy. At this point in my journey (at least for now), the specific answers to these and many other questions are not the most important part of my experience. Rather, the learning for me was and is the very fact that I was confronted with asking myself these questions in each of the new environments that I visited. This process encouraged me to reflect back to our congregation and imagine myself as a participant in any one of our three regular minyanim. The view from the bima will most certainly never be the same! In the words of my predecessor, Hazzan Samuel Kelemer, “to be continued...” During the week of May 6, I participated in the 60th Cantors Assembly Conference, which this year took place in Los Angeles. During the week, in addition to many hours of learning and reflection, we installed our new President of the Cantors Assembly, my friend and colleague, Cantor Joseph Gole of Sinai Temple. I also look forward to sharing my reflections on this international gathering with you in the next issue of KHA. B’shalom, Hazzan Jeremy Lipton Kol ha’aM Temple Beth Am TBA CONGRATULATES OUR GRADS! The students stayed at host family homes and lived life for ten days as Israelis. Our parents joined the students for some touring days of Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv and Masada, and then had tours of their own. Our school twinning is a program of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation’s Tel Aviv-Los Angeles Partnership. Rabbi Susan Leider Principal Day School Profile: Lori Shuman By Beth Dror I just finished my interview with Pressman Academy Middle School teacher Lori Shuman and feel like I got a double macchiato latte for the price of a small coffee. For now I have two insights - one into a great teacher and one into the minds of adolescents. You can’t discuss the joys and challenges of teaching middle school without knowing the unique qualities of middle schoolers. Lori is a teacher who not only understands and respects them, but is also able to meet their academic needs. As Lori explains it, “Middle schoolers need to express their unique and emerging strengths and talents.” The projects Lori assigns allow her students to do just that. Here are a few examples. Read them as if you’re in middle school. You’re sure to be impressed. 6th grade Creative Arts: Write an ode to someone or something of great importance in your life. Make it vocabulary rich. Fill it with detail. Enjoy this opportunity for creative expression filled with personal meaning. 6th grade Social Studies: Work in a collaborative group to research a subspecies of Early Humans. Create an original product that reflects your knowledge - a diorama, 3-d poster, power point presentation, or skit. Present your findings to the class so everyone can learn. 8th grade English: Research a literary movement or period. Focus on the reasons it started, major writers and their works, themes, controversy, and lasting effects. Analyze your impressions and synthesize everything into a speech and visual aid. (Ahh . . . . teaching at its best!) Now back to the unique qualities of adolescents because you’re sure to find this interesting and relevant (if you have, will have, or have had them in your home), and it will instill you with great admiration for Lori Shuman. In Lori’s words, “They are going through a multitude of changes - emotionally, physically, psychologically. They are molding themselves, finding out who they are and who they want to become. They need a solid foundation, direction, guidance, advice, and sometimes tough love. At times you may feel you’re not getting through to them, but in actuality they remember and have processed every word you said and every piece of advice you gave. They are mature enough to discuss world issues, controversial issues, and begin to explore the meaning of life and the direction theirs will take. It’s an exciting time in a child’s life and I enjoy being a small 12 part of it.” Lori - you are a very big part of it and your understanding of this stage of development is truly impressive. Lori was a little girl when she decided she wanted to become a teacher and never changed her mind. In her words while an undergrad, “I wanted to be a constant in a child’s life, someone he/she could count on, a positive role model and support system.” Lori’s students are very fortunate to have a teacher who both inspires them with creative, open-ended assignments and truly cares about them as individuals. Lori also serves as Yearbook Advisor for Pressman Academy. She puts the entire yearbook together with help from her 8th grade Creative Arts class. In her free time, she enjoys running, spinning, yoga, and traveling. Her family includes her mom, her sister, Lisa Friedman, who works at the temple, and her dog, Birdy, who always makes her laugh. When asked to share a special fact that people may not know about her, Lori replied, “I went to religious school here and had my Bat Mitzvah at TBA 20 years ago!” And we’re very glad that Lori’s path brought her back this way to make an incredible difference in the lives of Pressman middle schoolers. A GOOD JEWISH EDUCATION LASTS A LIFETIME Pressman Academy Religious Schools helps your child live a Jewish life that is stimulating, social, spiritual…and Fun. June/JulY 2007 TEMPLE BETH AM HAPPY SENIORS Shalom, The Temple Beth Am Happy Seniors have been regularly attracting new members. Our luncheons are the usually on the second Thursday of each month and include a speaker from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a delicious kosher lunch followed by fabulous entertainment. The cost for the entire program is only $10. You don’t have to be a member of the group to attend our lunches but we invite your membership at $15 ($25 couple) for a year. The Mother’s Day/Father’s Day lunch on May 10th was a huge success; everyone who attended received a gift and a carnation. We would like to thank Doyle Kutch for donating the carnations. Our next luncheon is Thursday, June 14, 2007. The medical lecture topic is “Skin cancer and heat related problems” and our entertainers are “3 For The Show.” In July, our luncheon will be held July 12th (the third Thursday) and the topic and entertainer will be announced. We are also working on a trip for July, details to follow. The group will once again be selling Entertainment Books; great gift idea for the holidays. Look for more information in August. Reservations for lunch may be made by calling Charlene at 310 652-7353. For more information on our group or upcoming activities call Miriam at 310 652-7354 x521. Services take place on the Pilch Rooftop Playground of the Rena E. Ganzberg Education Center, and are followed by a catered Shabbat Dinner. SHIR SHABBAT UNDER THE STARS Rachel Graffy and her family were adopted by Temple Beth Am in 2002, two years after her husband Ariel was murdered by a sniper’s bullet on his way home from work as a civilian employee of the IDF. Through an organization called One Family, Rachel and her children Nofar, Mor and Dor were connected with the TBA community, and over $15,000 was sent from Beth Am members to Rachel via the Los Angeles Jewish Federation. Every year at Yom Ha’atzmaut, parents of the Pressman Academy visit the Graffy family at their home in Petach Tikva, sending good wishes and sharing stories to honor the memory of Ariel. On June 9, 2007, Dor Graffy will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. This year’s delegation brought Dor a certificate of Bar Mitzvah signed by Rabbi Rembaum, as well as other gifts from TBA’s Sisterhood, Brotherhood and USY, along with contributions towards his continuing education from TBA members. Rabbi Helene Kornsgold delivered hugs, kisses and a personal Bar Mitzvah blessing. Rachel and her children (front) are shown here with Pressman parents and staff (standing, lft to rt): Josh Sharfman, Lori Port, Rabbi Helene Kornsgold, Sheryl Katchen, Marlisse Bacharach, Audrey Chesed, Sara Vanunu, Deb Kollin, Rachael Gordon, Julie Shuer, Miriam Prum Hess, Perry Tessel.
