RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE
Seeing the death of his beloved brother Aaron, Moses sees his own end. He sees
the death of Aaron and sees what he wishes for himself.
He wishes to die with a “kiss” as we say in Hebrew. He also wishes to leave this
world much like Aaron did – with a clear sense of who was to follow him. Aaron
had his sons set up in a line of succession – it was clear that by merit of tribe who
would in fact be the Cohanim. But political leadership is a very different animal –
thus, we read of G-d’s command to select Joshua.
As he is selected – Moshe places his hands upon Joshua’s head. The symbolism is
significant – Moshe was only commanded to choose him, not place his hands on
him. By Moshe doing more than he was commanded, he showed himself and the
people his complete faith in his choice.
