The four passages included in tefillin are basic to Judaism. Two speak to the exodus from Egypt, and a Jew’s responsibility to G-d. The two passages from the Shema express the concept of the Oneness of G-d and His Kingship, reward and punishment, and the responsibility to observe the commandments. All of these concepts must always be with us, upon our arm that symbolizes action and is opposite the heart, which is the seat of emotion. And they must be upon our head, the seat of intellect, which enables us to be conscious of our responsibilities. The message of the Exodus is more than basic, it is something that we must be ever vigilant about, so we wear tefillin which become those constant reminders to remember what they are and to do the commandments. Whether these mitzvot are minor or major is not the issue, because they will forever reinforce our faith Kneseth Israel is your spiritual home Congregation Kneseth Israel MAKING THE ORDINARY EXTRAORDINARY SHABBAT SHALOM Baruchim HaBaem - A warm welcome to our guests.
