But Washington the president was every bit the giant that Washington the general was—shaping and defining the executive role on the fly, serving the country even before there was a city on the Potomac that would bear his name. (He was sworn in at Manhattan’s Federal Hall and served his presidency there and in Philadelphia.) With the same resourcefulness and calm that he used to motivate his ragtag troops during the Revolutionary War, Washington deftly held together a fledgling government riven by discord. Among the most contentious voices in his Cabinet were its two most prominent members: Alexander Hamilton, a proponent of strong federal power, and Thomas Jefferson, an advocate of states’ rights. Washington, however, had little stomach for backroom rough-and-tumble. He hoped that the United States would not have political parties at all, arguing that “the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of Party are sufficient to make it in the interest and the duty of a wise People to discourage and restrain it.” A bit too kumbaya for a revolutionary? Maybe. But while this vision proved naïve, such were his mediating skills that he guided his country and government through a period of deep philosophical schisms, making tough choices when he had to, such as endorsing Hamilton’s idea of establishing a semi-public Bank of the United States over Jefferson’s full-throated protest. He created the Cabinet system, asserted executive authority over foreign policy, set the two-term precedent, and kept his promise to visit all 13 former colonies. And in a feat not repeated by any president since, Washington even returned to active military duty, saddling up for battle in 1794, to help put down the Whiskey Rebellion, a short-lived revolt by some Pennsylvania farmers who were up in arms over a high federal excise tax on booze. A reluctant president who had hoped to retire to his Virginia farm, Mount Vernon, after his first term expired, Washington was nevertheless the one man in America who conveyed the strength, decency, and might—he stood six feet two, weighed around two hundred pounds, and was, by all reports, physically imposing—to play the role of paterfamilias of what would prove to be a huge, dynamic, and unruly family. —david kamp 8 va ni t y fair’s presidential profiles va ni t y fair’s presidential profiles 000 portfolio / logo design PARK portfolio / FIELD logo design LIFE CARE SOLUTIONS Advocacy | Empathy | Integrity 5) EAGLES EY , Colorado, McWhinney is a team of talented people who are passionate s for people and providing fabled experiences to our customers.
