Four years have gone by since those Quarter finals against New Zealand, the 2011 champion. There is nothing else to be waiting for. The 2015 World Cup has started, in the lands where this beloved sport was born. The 31 Argentine players, together with the technical staff, are facing this remarkable challenge: a World Cup that is promising to break all records. These last four years have not been the usual journey to a World Cup: it included four series of the Rugby Championship and the confirmation of the incorporation of the Argentine franchise to the Super Rugby. The stage is set for this World Cup to be special and I believe it will certainly be that way. CARLOS ARAUJO ARGENTINE RUGBY UNION PRESIDENT 3 Once more, I would like to express my thanks to the press for their non-stop work and for following and backing our national teams. To the sponsors, who are constantly giving us their support. I wish everybody to perform a great job in the World Cup and hope that those travelling to London will fully enjoy this competition. An immeasurable number of people have participated in the Argentine rugby history to get to this present: directors, coaches, players, UAR professionals, every single Argentine club, and all their people. We are ALL part of this World Cup that has already begun. Let us start enjoying it! Formed at the club San Luis de la Plata, he played in all its divisions and was team captain of the first division for a decade. In his time as a player, he was part of the UAR’s Second National Team, he played in the Representative Team of the city of La Plata and was awarded 10 Honour Pennants at his club. His passion for rugby spread to other areas, where he was coordinator and trainer at kids’ and junior rugby levels, as well as the coach of the Senior Division of the Club San Luis, with whom he achieved two promotions to First Division in 1992 and 1994. As a rugby director, he filled different positions at his club and, in 1996, was member of the first Board of Directors of the URBA (Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires). He became President of that Union in 2007 and returned to the UAR in 2012. He has been the UAR’s First Vice-president for a year now. He has been the Pumas’ Head Coach since October 2013. He started his career as player in the club Universitario de Tucumán, where he then made his first steps as rugby trainer at junior and senior levels and later became the coach of the Representative Team of the province of Tucumán. He also collaborated in the Junior and Sevens National Teams. His career in international rugby started in Portugal, where he managed to coach the National Team that in 2007 played a World Cup for the first time in the history of the country. After a brief time in the French rugby, Hourcade returned to his native country to join the national staff. In Argentina, Hourcade coached the ICBC Pampas XV and the Jaguars for several years, taking an important role in the big growth experienced by the Argentine Representative Teams. Consequently, in November 2013, he found himself leading his first matches as the Pumas’ Head Coach. A player from Duendes Rugby Club in Rosario from 1983 to 2001, Raúl played for the Pumas National Team from 1992 to 2000, period in which he played 20 Tests Matches. As a coach, he has been connected with his club, Duendes, where he started coaching the U18 and U19 teams but quickly took control of the first division with which he enjoyed two successful seasons. He has worked for the National Teams as video analyst in the technical staff led by Santiago Phelan and coached the Jaguars from 2008 to 2010. In 2011 he became part of the UAR Coaches Staff, first as the ICBC Pampas XV coach and then as the Pumas’ Assistant Coach. Germán was a player at Olivos Rugby Club until 1999, when he stepped off the field to start his coaching career. At the beginning, he worked for the coaching staff at his club, at Champagnat and at CASI, where he worked next to Santiago Phelan. In 2008, he started working for the National Teams, first as video analyst, then as skills coach and now as Assistant Coach to Daniel Hourcade. Pablo Bouza, a player that started at Duendes Rugby Club, where he stood out as lock and third-row player, had his chance at the international rugby playing for Harlequins and Leeds, both in England. With the Pumas, he played 36 matches, standing out with his 4 tries in the 2003 World Cup and his participation in the historic tie against the British & Irish Lions in 2005. In 2010, he was called by Daniel Hourcade to go on his last tour as player with a National Team, the Jaguars. At the age of 37, Bouza was an important player in the tough tour around Russia, where he shared the team with several young players such as Martín Landajo, Tomás Cubelli, Nicolás Sánchez, Joaquín Tuculet, Leonardo Senatore and Santiago González Iglesias. As a coach, he worked at the club Duendes and was in charge of the High Performance Plan in the Litoral Region (PLAR Litoral). He was then called by Daniel Hourcade to become part of the technical staff, focusing on the line-out and the defence system. Moreover, he was the U20 National Team’s Manager in 2013. Born in Paraná, he started playing rugby at the club Estudiantes from that city and then moved to Atlético del Rosario while he was studying odontology, where he graduated. He was an U19 Pumita in 1994 and 1995. He reached his best rugby level in the team of Santa Fe, was then part of the Buenos Aires representative team and was called to play for the Pumas, playing 3 matches with the team. In 2002, he started his experience in England, where he played as prop for Bristol and the Saracens. An injury in his knee made him come back and shelter once more in the club that had witnessed his arrival at the age of seven: Estudiantes de Paraná. He stopped playing and began his career as coach of the team. He had an experience at the French Rouen that lasted two year and the joined the coaches’ staff of the representative teams of Entre Ríos. He was next to Hourcade along the year 2012 with the ICBC Pampas XV and the Jaguars in the American Rugby Championship and had already been working for the UAR at the High Performance Centres. Martín Gaitán is, together with Germán Fernández, the only survivors of the Pumas technical staff from the previous World Cup. With a really fortunate career as player, Gaitán played around ten Test Matches wearing the Pumas jersey and was able to stand out in the French club Biarritz Olympique. After an early end of his playing career due to a heart condition, this player formed in the club Estudiantes de Paraná, started his career as coach in the junior teams at the Biarritz. His return to the national teams, this time on the technical side, came with Santiago Phelan, with whom he worked together in the Pumas Staff from 2008 to 2013. This season, Gaitán has been called by Daniel Hourcade to join the Senior National Team staff and he shares his experience and knowledge both in defence and in aspects related to individual skills. The “Cheto”, as he is known in the rugby world, was born and brought up in Tucumán Rugby. He started playing at the age of 7 and at 19 he had already made his debut in first division and was playing the Seven de la República with the representative team of Tucumán. He was champion with Tucumán Rugby eight times and with the representative team of Tucumán seven times, where he was team captain from 1991 to 1998. With the Pumas he made his debut in 1991 against New Zealand and then played the 1991 World Cup in England. His second World Cup was in South Africa in 1995. He played a total amount of 23 Test Matches in a period of six years. At present, as a Sports Manager, the former third-row player from Tucumán has a key role in the relationship between the players and the technical staff, as well as with the UAR directors. He has a very respectable career path for his position. He is one of the most memorable faces, due to the fact that he has been with the UAR national teams since the year 1992. Boasting an extensive career in the field of medicine, he graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and then specialized in orthopaedics and traumatology and arthroscopies. He is a renowned doctor, a sports injury and knee specialist as well, and is a key staff member as regards the health of the Argentine national team. At the same time, he is the official spokesperson when it comes to giving medical reports on the team or on any player who suffers from an injury. The former first-row player from San Cirano is an eminent doctor and a wellrecognized source of sports medicine knowledge. Formed at Hindú club, where he got to play at first division as prop, Lucas Toro was able to continue related to rugby due to his studies in physiotherapy. He is a referent and multi-champion with his club Don Torcuato, where was part of the team that won 4 times the URBA championship between 2006 and 2009. In 2010 he wanted to stop playing rugby but his friends convinced him to play for one more year. His work with the Pumas took him to the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand and he keeps on giving his professional support to players, a key aspect before and after each match. As a half-scrum, he called the attention at the club Córdoba Athletic. He was then part of the Dogos representative team and played three test matches with the Pumas, where he scored a try. His passion for medicine took him to the field of physiotherapy. He specialized in High Performance Sports Rehabilitation. He has collaborated in the representative team of Córdoba and he has been part of the UAR teams since 2011. Apart from the Sevens, he was also with the ICBC Pampas XV and with the Jaguars. His job, as well as Toro’s job, is key for the players’ recovery after every encounter and during the week for the preparation for the following matches. Gonzalo Santos was a great third-row player that got to be the captain of his club, Olivos. Once he decided to stop playing rugby, with his physical preparation degree in his hand, moved on to start working for rugby: first at his club and then with the UAR national teams. The physical preparation specialist’s role demands dedication and knowledge. Thus, Santos is a key part in the development of the High Performance national teams and daily work with the players from the National Teams. Coming from the club Asociación Alumni, Rodrigo has been working with the UAR for more than a decade so far. He was first involved in the Trust Fund (Fondo Solidario), then was appointed the Logistics Director and finally became the Argentine team’s Manager in 2008. He knows every single corner of the Union and is in charge of everything that involves the Pumas: facilities, training sessions, fields, equipment, etc. His task demands great dedication and time and he manages to fulfil it with soundness in every tour or local presentation made by the Pumas. Next to Daniel Hourcade, Rodrigo Jiménez Salice has travelled well in advance to analyse and decide on the venues and facilities where the Pumas will be staying during the 2015 World Cup in England. Daniel Pérez began to be related to rugby ever since the last year of kids’ rugby moving on to the junior categories. He eventually became a renowned person in the province of Tucumán and in the country with respect to his rugby-related coverage as journalist, having the experience of three Senior World Cups and one Junior World Cup. He started his career in video analysis in Tucuman Rugby club and Tucumán’s representative team in 2007 and that is how he reached, in 2008, the National Teams: the Pumitas and the Jaguars, where he worked together with Daniel Hourcade. When Hourcade took over the Senior National Team, Pérez became the video analyst of the Pumas, a task that demands great accuracy and speed when it comes to the match analysis. Logistics is crucial for a national team and Jorge Ruarte challenges the timing and spaces. Born and brought up in the Patagonia region, he started playing rugby in Puerto Madryn and when he finished studying he moved to Buenos Aires. He studied and graduated in sports journalism, worked in his profession and at the beginning of the 21st century he entered the UAR. He has been working with the Union for more than ten years now and is very well respected in his position. So far, he has been next to the Pumas in two World Cups and since 2007, he has been in charge of the team’s logistics. He’s been present at 86 test matches with the team, apart from having worked for the other national teams, Jaguars and Pampas XV —team with whom he won the 2011 Vodacom Cup and the two series of the Pacific Rugby Cup in 2014 and 2015. Jorge is always willing to satisfy any requirement from the players and the staff. He is key to the technical staff. 7 Manager Video Analyst Logistics ARGENTINA STAFF PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD RAFAEL LARIA ARGENTINA STAFF HEAD TO HEAD KEIR WENHAM-FLATT Media Manager Strength and Conditioning Coach Club: Lomas Athletic Date of Birth: 03/07/1980 Club: Northampton Demons Rugby League Date of Birth: 21/09/1985 Rafael Laría, as well as most staff members, has been connected to rugby all his life. He made his debut in 2005 with the U21 National Team at the Junior World Cup held in Mendoza. Besides, he participated in the Pumas 7s and in Argentina A. He started his career with the Pumas in December 2005, in a match against Samoa where he scored a try. After several good presentations, the powerful wing played his first World Cup in 2007 in France and scored a try in the memorable victory against Ireland. During that World Cup, Horacio was a regular first-team player in the six matches played by Argentina. At the beginning of the 2007/2008 season, Horacio left his initial club, Hindú Club, and started gaining experience in the French rugby. After a short participation in Dax, the fast wing moved to Brive and finally to the English club Leicester Tigers in 2010, where he stood out until mid-2012. During the following seasons, he played in Bath. In 2011 he played his second World Cup in New Zealand, where he was present in the five games contested by the National Team. The player, originated in Belgrano Athletic Club, can take either the centre or fly-half position. This versatility opened up the doors of the Biarritz Olympique, where he played for several years, and now the English Saracens are the ones who are enjoying the skills of the Argentine player. Marcelo made his debut with the Pumas in 2007, during an Italy tour in the country. Unfortunately, for a while, some injuries left him out of the squad list and could not be taken into account by the national coaches. However, he then recovered and was part of the Pumas in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand, being one of the key players in the Argentine team. After playing the four Personal Rugby Championships with the Pumas, “Chelo” is one of the players who has had more appearances in the team for the last years. 31 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA STAFF ARGENTINA SQUAD CLICK TO VIEW UPDATE PROFILE ONLINE HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE Tests: 12 (15 points – 3 tries) 2015: 16/05 v. With his great performance in the junior national teams and the Pumas 7s, Cordero made his first tour with the Senior National Team in November 2012, although his debut against a big rival would have to wait still further for a year, when, under Daniel Hourcade’s directions, he finally entered the field against England. Formed in Regatas de Bella Vista club, where he still plays, Cordero had the chance to wear the Barbarians FC jersey in the friendly match held in November 2013 against Fiji. In turn, his good performance with the ICBC Pampas XV places him as a strong option to get his place within the initial fifteen. 33 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA STAFF ARGENTINA SQUAD CLICK TO VIEW UPDATE PROFILE ONLINE CREEVY, Agustín AGE: 30 TESTS: 40 Points: 10 Complete Name: Agustín Creevy Weight & Height: 110 kg - 1.81mts. His courage and dedication in every match played with the national team are a true demonstration of the values transmitted by the Pumas and which make the Argentine rugby so proud. 61 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF CLICK TO VIEW UPDATE PROFILE ONLINE HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE Tests: 16 (10 points – 2 tries) 2015: 16/05 v. It only took the payer, who comes from the club Asociación Alumni, two years to stand out with the U20 Pumitas when they played the 2012 and 2013 World Cups. This triggered a quick incorporation to the Pumas squad and the young 20-year-old became a permanent third-row player in the senior national team. In 2013, Pablo played in all the representative teams: Pumitas, Pampas XV, Sevens and the Pumas. This made the club Leicester Tigers notice him and contract him to play in the English tournament. Due to an injury suffered at the beginning of the 2014 Rugby Championship, he was forced to stay off the field until his return to the National team in the historic victory against South Africa in Durban. 63 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA STAFF ARGENTINA SQUAD CLICK TO VIEW UPDATE PROFILE ONLINE HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE Tests: 16 (10 points – 2 tries) 2015: 16/05 v. U19: Tours: 2 2015: New Zealand - South Africa PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF MONTOYA, Julián Julián Montoya has been growing at a quick pace for the last years. The year 2013 was a great year for this hooker and the starting point of his career in the National Teams. With the Pumitas, he achieved the fourth position in the Junior World Cup and that triggered his participation at the end of the season with the Jaguars in the Americas Rugby Championship. He had a very good season outset in 2014 with the ICBC Pampas XV and with the Pumas in the South American Championship, which gave him the possibility to make his debut at international level in the June window, when he played against Ireland and Scotland. Not having a place in the Rugby Championship, the player from the club Newman participated once more in the Americas. This season, his regularity allowed him to be the first option to substitute the team captain, Agustín Creevy. In turn, he participated in the matches against South Africa and in the match held in Mendoza against the Wallabies. Montoya boasts very good skills in the loose game, great physical power and has improved a lot in the scrum. Apart from taking the hooker position, he is also training to become an option as left-side prop. 65 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE PUMAS RWC PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF CLICK TO VIEW UPDATE PROFILE ONLINE HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE Tests: 4 2015: 25/07 v. He scored a try against Ireland and another try against Scotland that same year and therefore earned his place in the Personal Rugby Championship as an initial XV, where he continued to demonstrate his abilities scroring two tries. Besides, he played the three matches in the November window. Coming from the club Los Tilos, Joaquín made his debut in 2012 against Italy during the June window and participated in the two matches against France. On the European tour in November, he played the three games against Italy, Wales and France. Since Daniel Hourcade has taken over, Joaquín has become the Head Coach’s first option as fullback, choice which is supported by his level. 85 HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE 86 ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF HEAD TO HEAD PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE KINGSHOLM STADIUM LEICESTER CITY STADIUM WEMBLEY STADIUM Capacity: 16,500. Gloucester’s ground has an enviable history when it comes to international rugby. Kingsholm hosted its first Test match way back in 1900, when Billy Bancroft led Wales to a 13-3 victory over England. His opposite number that day was one Octopus Gamlin, or Herbert to his mother. Kingsholm didn’t host another international for 91 years and when it did, 12,000 fans watched world champions New Zealand score eight tries as they cruised past the USA 46-6 in RWC 1991 thanks to a hat-trick from full back Terry Wright. It was later the venue for a 2000 Rugby League World Cup match between New Zealand and Lebanon. Home to Aviva Premiership side Gloucester, Kingsholm is widely regarded as the noisiest crowd in the league, largely due to the boisterous inhabitants of The Shed stand. In 2007 the main grandstand was redeveloped, increasing the total capacity to 16,500. Capacity: 32,321. Like Midlands counterpart Pride Park, the Leicester City Stadium replaced a decaying old ground with a state-of-the-art all-seater facility. It has seen significant oval ball action already: Leicester Tigers have played six matches here, including a 2005 Heineken Cup semi-final, which they lost to Toulouse, and a 2006 quarter-final in the same tournament, which saw them defeated by Bath. The jinx was broken by a win over Llanelli in a European Cup semi in 2007, and they’ve since got revenge over Bath on the ground, too. In 2006, to celebrate the centenary of Springbok overseas tours, the stadium hosted a World XV v South Africa contest. The Springboks took the honours 32-7. Capacity: 90,000. The original Wembley Stadium hosted five of football’s European cup finals, the 1966 World Cup Final, the landmark 1985 Live Aid concert, and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1948 Olympic Games. Already, the new Wembley Stadium has staged huge concerts, a UEFA Champions League final, Olympic football, NFL matches, both codes of rugby and motor sport. Wembley hosted its first rugby international in 1992, when England defeated a touring Canada side 26-13 while Twickenham underwent redevelopment, but Wales have played the most games here: contesting seven internationals while the Millennium Stadium was being built in the late 1990s. A cherished memory for many Wales fans is Scott Gibbs’ late try against England in 1999, which denied the ‘away’ side a Grand Slam as Wales recorded a famous 32-31 Five Nations victory FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2015 ARGENTINA v GEORGIA SUNDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2015 ARGENTINA v NAMIBIA SUNDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2015 ARGENTINA v TONGA SUNDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2015 NEW ZEALAND v ARGENTINA STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF HEAD TO HEAD HANBURY MANOR MARRIOTT HOTEL AND COUNTRY CLUB Address: Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 0SD, UK. 13TH - 25TH SEPTEMBER 2015 87 PUMAS STATISTICS PUMAS RWC STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS CHELTENHAM CHASE HOTEL Address: Shurdington Road, Brockworth, Gloucestershire GL3 4PB, UK. 23TH - 26TH SEPTEMBER 2015 MEDIA SCHEDULE CONTACT MEDIA FIXTURE SAINT GEORGE’S PARK (THE FA) Address: Burton Tatenhill, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, UK. 27TH SEPTEMBER - 12TH OCTOBER 2015 STADIUMS, HOTELS & TRAINING LOCATIONS PRESIDENT´S MESSAGE ARGENTINA SQUAD ARGENTINA STAFF HEAD TO HEAD CHELTENHAM RFC Established in 1889, Cheltenham RFC, also known as “The Tigers”, is a rugby club with a rich heritage.
