The focus of attention will be how to sensitize educators to subtle non-verbal signals that condition the climate of the classroom and help improve the instruction process. Objective of this course is to identify various physiological and psychological addictions in students, recognize the potential dispositions, examine the causes, explore effective prevention strategies, and how to initiate appropriate intervention techniques. S16-01021 COPING WITH DISRUPTIVE STUDENT CLASSROOM BEHAVIORS Robert Vulpis - 1 Credit – Inservice - EAST MEADOW 3 SESSIONS – July 11 - 13, 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM This course will focus on developing techniques and strategies targeted at coping with disruptive student behaviors manifested in the classroom. Topics of discussion will include: proven methods found to de-escalate student-teacher conflict. Additionally, paradigms will be explored that build self-imaging and are proven effective tools in promoting conflict resolution and modifying student behaviors. FEE: $5.00. S16-01022 SEXUALITY AND YOUTH: POSITIVE MESSAGES FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE TODAY Heather Simonson, LMSW—heathersimonson14@gmail.com 3 Credits - Inservice - June 27 - August 15 This course presents a holistic view of human sexuality based on scientific study and research in the field of sexology. It explores issues in sexuality relating to teachers and the educational system from the biological, psychological and social perspectives. More than sexuality-related issues are affecting the educational environment. While there are materials and resources specifically for parents and adolescents, educational professionals are still largely unsupported and without resources. This curriculum seeks to address this rarity by leading educational professionals through a series of sexuality education-related activities to increase knowledge, assess personal values and build skills. This course is also a turnkey program which highlights highly effective methods and techniques to be used with youth. Topics: healthy versus harmful foods, debate over the value of school lunches, candy, soda and other high sugar foods in schools, fast food restaurants, the effect of diet and exercise on the brain and on academic student performance. Participants will examine the causes of stress and anxiety and understand methods to alleviate these issues in the classroom. Participants will learn how to implement strategies that reduce conflict and anxiety in the classroom setting. No matter where you live, there is probably a National Park Site near you. Hidden within each National Park is an exciting story waiting to be discovered. It would be impossible for a teacher to bring his or her class to visit all of them, but thanks to the World Wide Web, it is now possible for students to take virtual field trips without ever leaving the classroom. Each on-line session will be devoted to exploring ways that National Parks can be used in class. S16-06029 CREATIVE COLLAGE TECHNIQUES Julia Lang-Shapiro - 3 Credits – Inservice LONG BEACH—5 SESSIONS—July 25—29—8:00 AM—5:30 PM This course is designed as an introduction to various collage techniques. Creating artwork is not something that should be intimidating or scary. Collage is the perfect medium because you are not starting from scratch. Source material for collages can be anything: fabric, paper, even a candy wrapper! Open your imagination and experiment with some creative collage techniques.
