Files has guided the destiny of your school. The course has not always been smooth, for in these three decades wars and a depression have had their effects on our lives. In spite of adverse con ditions, your school life has moved along its chartered course with a fair degree of serenity and, I believe, a great measure of happiness. To a large, extent, this success was due to the leadership and stability of your principal, Ralph E. Files. Mr. Files, to an unusual degree, has been quick to accept good in the new while re taining the invaluable and unchanging of the old. His kindliness and understanding have been felt by all alike through the years. He has been confidant and guide to many of the boys and girls who have been under his supervision. His work will not be forgotten. It should be a satisfaction to know that one has contributed so much to the memories and to the future of so many thousands of boys and girls — boys and girls who as men and women will think of their school days and of Mr. Files with affectionate gratitude. As Mayor of our city, and as a personal friend, I wish Mr. Files much happiness in the years to come. C h a rle s H. M arte n s M ayor BO A RD O F ED U C A T IO N L eft to R ig h t: C. P. L. J ay C a l d w e l l Around Town in 1055 E arrive one bright sunny day in New York and park the latest LEON SCHINDEL model, a 1955 rocket ship, on the nearest roof-top garage. We are making a minor convention an excuse for hunting up E. 0 . graduates. It is 9 a.m., and we are off to see the won derful show at Madison Square Garden. In a few minutes we are inside the huge building and have found our seats. Open ing a program designed by a Miss JUDY BETTCHER, we find that the twin ballet act of PEGGY SCHMIEDER and DOROTHY SCHILLER will start the show. Next, amidst roars and thunderous applause, the famous lion impersonator, WILLIAM GOLDFARB, pads into the spotlight. After his humorous and enjoyable performance, dark-haired HELEN CAWLEY skates gracefully over the floor. HELEN is the champion roller skater of her day. Now there is an intermission, during which we read the brilliant criticism by LAWRENCE W ARBASSE of the rising young star, PAULA KAST, the most popular singer since Dinah Shore. ROBERT HAGUE, with his super-salesmanship, inveigled us into buying the $.50 program. The show is ended with a performance by dare-devil MARION SPENCE and her horses. At 12:30 we set- out for the famous SAVAGE - SALA restaurant, anxious to sample some of their world-famous cookies. We are half way across 43rd Street when we hear a loud crash, and who tumbles forth from a wrecked car but JACK BLAIR — and who is dragged out of the other twisted mess but ERNEST WARBURTON. The clang of the ambulance is heard imme d ia te ly , and with b r a k e s sc re e c h in g , GEORGE RATNER, the ambulance driver, deposits DR. JAM ES SHARPE and nurse LORETTA LA VERY at the scene of the accident. Dr. Sharpe proclaims the two men unhurt, and with a sigh of relief the crowd disperses at Police Officer O’DON NELL’S orders. Page Sixteen We enter the restaurant with a bottle of soda mints tucked under our arms. Having been seated, we look around, and our eyes fall on America’s woman bridge champion, JEA N BOMEISLER. With her is the chess champion, FRANKLIN HOWARD. In the corner ALLAN LLOYD and his orchestra, with singer DOT DEW, are softly playing “ Casey and His Strawberry Blonde,” which has just made the Hit Parade for the third time in a century. Across the room, statis tician JA NET SOUTHGATE and historian ROSALIE GALANTI discuss the whys and wherefores of King Wazahi’s tomb recently discovered by FLORENCE KRIEGER, eminent archaeologist. At the table next to them, TOM O’CON NOR and BILL ALBERT, who keep all America in stitches, are busily dissecting steaks. Their new show, “ Keep-em-laughi n g has just started on a tour of the coun try, and they are bidding their favorite eat ing place a fond farewell. As we are leav ing after a very enjoyable meal, we bump into the fashion columnist, PAT ROYER, and VIRGINIA KUGELMAN, the D. A.’s secretary. Pat mentions an exhibit at CLAY’S Department Store, and we decide to see it. MARGARET WHETTAM, dem onstrating the new McMANUS gooeychewy gum, bids us good-bye with a sam ple, and we’re on our way once more. On the way we pass the Chemical Re search Building and, as we look up at it with bated breath, we think, “ We knew them once.” For in that very building VAN CLEAVE ELSDON, BILL LEBO, and ARTHUR SCHWARTZ have just discov ered the 98th element, according to the last issue of the E. 0 . H. S. News. Arriving at Clay’s, we see the exhibit, then look around. On the 5th floor we see ELLEN JAN E PFEIL, HAZEL SPACE, and RUTH NIGHTINGALE modeling the new streamlined evening dresses designed by BETTY OWENS. On the 9th floor, JACK SCHREIHOFER is running the new type electric train he has just invented, try ing to improve it, and amusing himself as well as the children who are wandering around. H a n c e THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE HE SOCIAL COMMITTEE, consisting this year of James Sharpe (chairman), Mary Burke, June Ulmer, George Beekman, and Janet Lees, deserves a crown for its untiring efforts. On the evening of February 7, it arranged to have the Junior-Senior Prom, which was both a financial and a social success. Before the date selected, considerable excitement arose over the problem of securing an orchestra to replace the one originally chosen, the latter having received a contract with a suburban supper club. The final choice was Gene Gibba’s Orchestra, a happy choice apparently, because everyone agrees that he had a “ super” time at this dance. The Committee’s second social success was the grad dance on May 2. All of the socially inclined students enjoyed to the full this last dance of the year and, in the case of seniors, of their high school days. Left to R igh t: G. Beekman, M. Burke, J. Ulmer, J . In stead of the joint concert of our own band and orchestra, we combined, on May sev enth, with those of Scott High School to present a most entertaining recital. Outside of its usual activities, the orchestra has done less playing for the students than in former years, and has not done anything with the Glee Clubs, but on the occasions that it did play, it was enthusiastically re ceived. As usual, we had the oportunity to send students to the All-State Orchestra, but only one, Janet Southgate, represented us. Page Sixty-two THE BAND f O UIDED by Mr. Herfurth, the band 5=^ proved a real source of entertainment to the student body this year, especially during the football season, when, led by Allan Lloyd, it added extra spirit to the games with its rousing marches. Although it presented no individual concert, the band worked well, and the members did their best in the main concert. Our band improves with time and with the increasing number of students that join every year, we can look forward to a con tinuance of its good work. P a g e Sixty-three DRAMATICS Q /N D ER the able direction of Miss LAs Jeannette Bjorneby and Mr. Lau rence Goodrich, the students in the depart ment of dramatics did consistently out standing work. One new experi ment was the organization of the Freshman Class so that each home room could send representatives to the class council. A sec ond was the presentation of the variety show at night instead of during the day, and the charging of admission. The ar rangement made possible a more entertain ing and successful show. The Council also turned the sale of the Syllabus over to the members of the Class Council, each one of whom canvassed his home room for subscriptions. Another in novation was the playing, during lunch hour, of records chosen by the students themselves. The Council functioned so admirably this year in its task of carrying out activi ties for the general good of the student body that members of councils came from other schools to study our system and see it in action. S e le r a e n « g s » ^ ’- ( V i c e .p r e s .), G I R L S ’ ATHLETIC A S S O C I A T I O N HIS year, because of the able plan ning of our physical education instruc tors, the East Orange High School program is the most varied of any offered in the New Jersey public schools. Besides their skillfully varied class program, the instruc tors advise the G. A. A., which during the year sponsors a very full program of after school activities: swimming, tennis, hockey, bowling, and riding in the fa ll; basketball, badminton, bowling, volley ball, and rid ing in the winter: and swimming, baseball, and tennis in the spring. A girl becomes a member if she goes out for some activity, such as swimming or tennis, in the fall. Even though she does not continue in the spring, she remains a member. Each quarter the entire Associa tion meets to be awarded chevrons and let ters for activity awards. A member receives P age Ninety-six a chevron if she goes out for an activity for half the number of times it is offered. (For example, if basketball is offered for eight een weeks and the member participates nine times, she is entitled to a chevron.) When a member has five chevrons, she is entitled to an E. 0 . monogram; when she has ten, she is entitled to a star. The Association’s very active board this year, Anna Schettino (President), Sue Smith (Vice-President), Audrey Braunsdorff (Secretary), and Janice Jordan (Hostess), is responsible for much of its success. It is one of the busiest of school organizations; not only has it supplied many entertainments but also, with the assistance of other girls in the school, the members have knitted many sweaters and mufflers for the Red Cross and Britain.
