WOOD Director SYNOPSIS OF SPRING AWAKENING The play ‘Spring Awakening’ is set in a provincial German township in the mid 19th century. The children of this time are raised into strict homes and schools; each teenager of the cast is struggling with breaking free from the conventional lifestyle. All teenagers want to express their individuality and sexuality, yet they are confused and frightened of judgment or punishment. The casts feel that they are trapped and turn to drastic measures to escape. Throughout the play, rock musical numbers break out which adds a new dimension to the play as it allows the cast to express their struggles in a different way. It then premiered on June 15, 2006 at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City. It then transferred to Broadway opening on December 10th, 2006. The play on Broadway has spawned several other productions worldwide. The play was awarded many prestigious awards including the ‘Tony Award’ for best musical, best book and best score.
