Will be giving a talk
I hope you all are bearing up with the winter weather, the
Field days have been lucky, not too wet this year. Courses
and workshops have been well supported but we would like
some feedback on what workshops you would be interested
in having.
Grant Sidaway, as usual, presented a very interesting
workshop on Wearable Technology. This seems to be the
next big “thing” with watches, fit bits etc. These devices can
record your pulse, check how you are sleeping, how many
steps you have walked during the day plus many other things
regarding your health. They also can tell the time!!
The opening hours of the Café at the Centre have been
changed. Monday, Wednesday and Friday they are open
8.00am to 1.00pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays. 9.00 to
11.00am.
If you are going to a course on Friday the 24th June, the foyer
will be closed due to the carpet having to be replaced. You
can still access our classroom by the front side door by Grey
Power.
We still have about 79 members who have not paid their subs
for this year. If you no longer wish to be a member could you
please email me pvdm@xtra.co.nz and let me know so I can
delete you from our records.
Meanwhile, enjoy your computing.

Send Word documents to someone who can’t open “.docx” files.
Save the document in RTF format – this will open in any word processor application. RTF (Rich Text
Format) is a universal format for virtually all word processor applications, irrespective of the operating system
(Windows, Apple, Linux, etc.) and age of the application.
To save a document in RTF format. Click on “File” (the blue tab at top left of the ribbon); click on “Save
As”; select “Rich Text Format (*.rtf)” in the drop-down menu; click on “Save”. Neal Utting
ONLINE BANKING (By Marilyn Goodwin Warkworth S/N)
Password Safety
Your Customer ID (or Access Code) & “Password” are the keys to your Bank Account.
Just as you would look after the keys to your home or your car, you must look after the keys to
your Bank Account
If your Bank requires a user-generated password in order to access online accounts, make sure
you choose one that is strong.
Some guidelines for password safety:
Choose Passwords that are hard to guess: The best way to achieve this is by making
it long & a mix of upper & lower case letters, numbers & special characters, as many of these
as allowed by your Bank. Always avoid using any common words or phrases & never create a
password that contains your name, initials, your date of birth, or your pets name.
Use your Online Banking password exclusively for banking.
Do Not use it for anything else.
Never write your Password down. It is something you have to remember. If you find
remembering all your passwords a problem, consider a Password Manager such as “Keepass,
LastPass, RoboForm, etc.”
Never share your Password.
Nobody (with the exception of the person who has Enduring Power of Attorney) should have
access to your Password, including your children & grandchildren.
Change your Password every few months, if your Bank allows it.
Never click on the “Save my Password” option, in the dedicated box that may be there
for you to tick or may appear to a pop–up on your screen
Do not set your browser to “Auto-complete” your login details.
Never change your security details in a public place. Someone maybe observing you
when you enter your customer Number or Password.
Windows 10 Task view and virtual desktops
One of the best things about Windows 10 is how it handles virtual desktops. The fact that it
finally handles them at all, out of the box, is a great step, since Mac OS X and Linux users
have had that capability for a long time. It lets you set up a series of tasks and windows on
your desktop, your email and Twitter window on another, and a third for general Web
browsing and research. To get started, click the Task View icon on the taskbar (immediately to
the right of the Search box), or hold down the Windows key (abbreviated throughout as Win)
and Tab. You can also drag an app to a new virtual desktop by bringing it over to the +New
Desktop option at the lower right.
Make the desktop more stylish
Windows 10 lets you personalize your desktop more thoroughly than before. Head to Start >
Settings > Personalization > Colors, and choose Show color on taskbar and Start Menu. You
can also tell it to automatically pick a color from your wallpaper and apply it underneath icons
of open apps, and you can remove the Start Menu’s translucent opti
Print to PDF
You can finally print a document (or rather, save it) as PDF without using a third-party
utility. This makes it much easier to save and distribute documents that aren’t easily
modified. Another long overdue feature makes it in under the radar
Schedule Windows updates
Instead of getting ambushed whenever Microsoft decides to push out a patch, you can schedule
restarts to install updates by going to Start > Settings > Updates and Recovery > Windows
Update. You can do this for future updates as well by selecting Notify to Schedule Res
