Page 3 Consider the Gift that Keeps Giving! An “In Honour” donation is a unique way to celebrate those who are special to us. Occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or the holidays are just a few examples when this type of donation may be considered. Remembering someone close to you with an “In Honour” donation as an alternative to flowers or a more traditional gift, means a lasting contribution to someone in need. Donors receive an official tax receipt for a minimum $10.00 donation & we will send a card acknowledging the donation with the appropriate occasion being celebrated. “In Honour donations are great to give and, of course, wonderful to receive. Contributions would stay in our community supporting and enhancing the programs and services provided by Community Care. The next time you are struggling to find that perfect gift, consider the gift that keeps on giving. A LESSON IN POLITICAL SPIN Judy Wallman, a professional genealogical researcher, discovered that Hillary Clinton's great-great uncle, Remus Rodham, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture is this inscription: "Remus Rodham; horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889." Judy e-mailed Hillary Clinton for comments. Hillary's staff of professional image adjusters sent back the following biographical sketch: "Remus Rodham was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honour when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed." And THAT is how it's done folks! Everyday, a young man would leave his office building at lunchtime and, as he passed the pretzel stand, he would leave her $1.00 - but never take a pretzel !! This offering went on for more than 3 years. The two of them never spoke. One day, as the young man passed the old lady's stand and left his dollar as usual, the pretzel lady spoke to him for the first time in over 3 years. Without blinking an eye, she said, "They're $1.25 now." Page 6 We have a variety of Programs we offer to seniors in the community which require the support of VOLUNTEERS. The campaign was designed to promote the challenge of senior’s hunger and the role Meals on Wheels plays in our community to address this challenge. The Mayor’s for Meals campaign began as an annual event in the United States to increase public awareness, recruit new volunteers and increase funding for Meals on Wheels organizations, the event has extended to Ontario, with events being held across Canada. Mayors from around the country were asked to help deliver meals with their local Senior Nutrition Program to seniors in their community. However, in 2014 this single day that was known as Mayors for Page 16 Meals, has been become a week-long celebration called Community Champions Week. During the third week of March – Monday, March 17 through Friday, March 21 local officials, celebrities, athletes and/or business owners are being encouraged to get out, speak up, deliver meals and raise awareness about senior hunger by participating in the March for Meals campaign. This as an international campaign provides the opportunity to shed light on our valuable services, celebrate our homebound neighbours and generate the resources needed to address senior hunger. Elinor White and Ellen FeganWright, Board Members for the Marmora Food Bank assisted with preparing the soup for delivery. The Marmora Helping Hands Food Bank provides an essential service in the community. The Marmora Helping Hands Food Bank is located in the basement of the Marmora Library on the main street. Ford of Canada’s unique event, known as Drive 4UR Community, is a way for local Ford Dealerships to support a local community or school partner in their fundraising events. For every test drive that is completed during the daylong event, Ford of Canada donates $20.00 to the partner, up to $6000.00. This event began in 2010 and so far more than $4 million have been raised for the community partners. Pat Dobb, the Executive Director for CCCH stated that ―Community Care for Central Hastings is thrilled that Hunter Ford chose our agency as this year’s partner in in the Drive 4UR Community Event. Only 66% of our funding comes from the Southeast Local Health Integration Network, CCCH is responsible for fundraising the additional 34% required to run our programs and these funds will definitely help.‖ Scott Gougeon from Hunter Ford indicated that ―Hunter Ford was happy to partner up with Community Care for Central Hastings for this year’s Drive One for Your Community Event. We feel privileged to work with a group that plays such an important role in our community. “Thanks to the support of the community, the event, which was held in Tweed, raised $2820.00 for Community Care for Central Hastings. (Continued next page) Page 18 (cont’d) On Sept 4/14, Scott Gougeon, along with his staff, presented Lynn Bird, CCCH’s Transportation Coordinator, and Veronica Flint, Meals on Wheels Coordinator, with a cheque for the funds raised during the Test Drive Event. The staff of Community Care for Central Hastings would like to take this opportunity to thank Hunter Ford, Ford of Canada, Pizza Latina for the loan of their parking lot, and the community of Central Hastings for their support. Lynn Bird, CCCH’s Transportation Coordinator, expressed her gratitude towards Hunter Ford and said that Hunter Ford has always been a huge supporter of CCCH, especially the Transportation Program. She further said that ―Hunter Ford partnering with CCCH for this event has been overwhelming.‖ Indicating that the funds raised through this event will go a long way in supporting the Transportation Program. This program provides seniors in our community with both medical and personal transportation trips. In 2013, 7988 trips were completed by 53 dedicated volunteers. By working together, we can make a difference. "Chutzpah" is a Yiddish word meaning gall or brazen nerve, sheer guts plus Arrogance.
