Ruben Martell, a Soldier with 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, reaches for a cargo net to get to his next destination on the High Ropes Challenge Course at the Soldier Activity Center here Saturday. The next high ropes event, which is open to the public, is scheduled for Aug. 29. Albert Alvarez, recreation specialist at the Soldier Activity Center at Fort Bliss, demonstrates how to climb the broken ladder with wood separations to get to the High Ropes Challenge Course Saturday at the SAC. The broken ladder is one of three ways to get to the obstacle course. High Ropes course builds confidence, good work out By Virginia Reza Garrison Public Affairs High Ropes Challenge Course participants had three climbing choices hanging 35 feet from the ground on Saturday at the Soldier Activity Center on East Fort Bliss. The ropes course is open to the public, including the surrounding community, every last Saturday of the month, and it had a share of customers waiting in line to take on the challenging course. The very daring and physically fit climbed to the top through the broken ladder with wood separations, which takes lots of muscle and agility. Others tried the rotating wooden beam with rock climbing hooks, described as rock climbing in motion. And supposedly, the less difficult was the flexible ladder, which although most struggled, many were still able to climb. At the top, however, as safe as patrons are hooked and harnessed, seven intimidating obstacles, including the Tarzan swing, wide beams, cargo net, single beam, zig zag beam, broken bridge and hell’s bells awaited the adventurous. “I recommend (the high ropes) for the mental and challenge part of facing your fears,” said Albert Alvarez, a certified high ropes instructor and recreation specialist at the Soldier Activity Center. “People need to get out of their comfort zone. Doing things that are not normal to them, motivates them to try new things. It gives them confidence and I think that’s your biggest benefit. Next time they are faced with other problems, they will think, ‘if I was able to climb and hang for 30 minutes doing obstacles then learning math is not that hard.’” The course is available to everyone by reservation. It could be used for unit training, private parties, to build confidence, or just for strengthening muscles. It is fun, physically demanding, mentally challenging and a full body workout, said Alvarez. “The course was epic,” said Chastity Ro- sales, a participant who showed up with her family and friends. “It was so amazing! We enjoyed it! It was such a pleasure to watch my kids do it. There is one who is afraid of heights and watching him get through the course was just amazing for me as a parent. Bring your family it is a great family teambuilding exercise. It is a great confidence builder for your children and it is fun. Thank you MWR.” The High Ropes course is one of many recreational activities sponsored by the Fort Bliss Family, Morale Welfare and Recreation. Next open High Ropes event is Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To reserve the high ropes course, a minimum of 10 and up to 50 people is required. The Outdoor Recreation personnel will gladly staff it. Children have to be big enough to wear the safety equipment. Basically, the course is for 14 and older, or children who are about 3 ½ feet tall and taller. The day began with a motivational run, music, a reading of the regiment’s history and a remembrance moment of Soldiers who have fallen in combat since the attacks of September 11. The regiment was founded in 1918 on the battlefields of France in the First World War as the 17th Tank Battalion. It suffered heavy casualties from numerous anti-tank mines, which are remembered prominently on the regiment’s crest. After the First World War, the 17th Tank Battalion, 19th Tank Battalion, and a third Tank Battalion combined to form the 2nd Tank Regiment. The 2nd Tank Regiment then converted and re-designated Oct. 25, 1932 as the 67th Infantry Regiment (medium tanks) and on July 15, 1940 it converted and re-designated as the 67th Armor Regiment assigned to 2nd Armored Division, Company A, 67th Armor Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia. The 67th Armor Regiment and its ancestral units participated in World War I, World War II, The Korean War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. FORT BLISS BUGLE • July 30, 2015 • 13B Bigger, faster, stronger By Rachel Rio Fort Bliss Bugle Staff It’s never fun warming the bench during a high school athletic career. A former football player and a current Soldier experienced just that during his sophomore year at Chapin High School; however, after attending the Strength and Conditioning camp here, he went from sitting on the bench to a starting defensive lineman. Through a phone conversation, 2nd Lt. Isaac Lewis, with 554th Engineer Training Battalion and student at the Basic Officer Leadership Course in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was that kid who was determined to play ball. “I wanted to play on the varsity team at Chapin High School, but instead I was riding the bench on the Junior Varsity team,” Lewis Alexander Briggs, a camp participant, sprints to measure his performance improvement throughout the duration of the Strength and Conditioning camp July 24, at Stout Gym here. Duraznos o Nectarinas Amarillas o Blancos White or Regular Peaches or Nectarines 77 ¢ LB. said. “The camp really taught me a lot of the basics (to) build a workout routine around.” Doug Briggs, Fort Bliss director of human performance and creator of the Strength and Conditioning course, helped Lewis reach his goal of becoming a better athlete. Briggs, a certified strength and condition specialist, a registered strength and conditioning coach with the National Strength and Conditioning Association who also has a background in Olympic training, has the perfect qualifications to train young athletes and help them increase their performance. “I wanted to start this program here because I wanted to help the high school students of Soldiers to become better athletes and to perform better in the local community,” Briggs said. The Strength and Conditioning camp has been around Fort Bliss since 2007. The purpose of the program is to take Soldiers, family members and children ages 13-18 and put them in advance strength and conditioning camp which practices include speed and agility, Briggs said. The summer program is six weeks long, Monday through Friday. The course includes weight training, speed and agility exercises and TRX core training. Alexander Briggs, Doug’s 15-year-old son, who is a middle infielder for Canutillo High School baseball team, is being scouted for several colleges. “My goal was to get bigger, faster and stronger,” Alexander said. “(By) working (hard) over these past couple of weeks, I accomplished that. I gained a lot of knowledge from not only my dad but the whole Human Performance team.” The Strength and Conditioning camp has a history of success stories, including, an athlete drafted into the NFL and to two females making it all the way to the softball world series. The camp is during the summer months and costs $149 for the six weeks. Also, included is an Under Armor backpack, two Under Armor shirts, a water bottle and supervised workout and testing. “I honestly give almost all the credit to him (Briggs) because most of all my knowledge, from working out at football and now in the military, I learned from this camp,” Lewis said. If you would like to enroll in one of Briggs’ camps or for more information, call 568-6458 or 568-2892.
