St. Mary’s School Monday 29 June 2015 Newsletter No. 6; Term 2 www.stmaryshastings.school.nz Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whanau, We welcome Siolo, Tupu and Emmily-Rose Venasio, Kyra Epplett and Sophie Wahl to our St Marys School community. With open arms, minds and hearts we accept them into our community and pray God’s blessing on them. Farewell Mrs Haronga This week we farewell Mrs Haronga, as she leaves St Mary’s at the end of the term to take up her new teaching position at Mahora School. We thank Denise for her contribution to St Mary’s School over the past 16 years and wish her the very best for her new job. We will miss her. Catholic Character For some years now Catholic Schools throughout New Zealand have been supporting specific Catholic Schools in different parts of the world. This year St. John’s Dala and Takwa Primary Schools in the Solomon Islands will benefit from a “Mufti Mania” which will be held at our school this Friday, 3 July. The children will be able to wear mufti and contribute a gold coin donation which will be used for reading resources and sports equipment for these schools. Thank you for your support of this very worthy cause. Teresa Neilson, D.R.S. Photos from our First Holy Communion Mass last month "How beautiful are the footsteps of those who bring the good news" (Rom 10:15-17) Welcome We welcome Miss Anna Watson who will be teaching room 7 for terms three and four. Anna is looking forward to being part of the St Mary’s School community. Junior Novice Gymnastics Festival Well done to all our students who participated in the Festival. All your practicing certainly paid off! Here is Reid McGuigan starting his floor routine. Thanks to Mrs McDonald for training and preparing our students and to all the parents and whanau who came along to watch. It was a great afternoon. Junior Novice Gymnastics Festival Last week 19 children from Rooms 9, 10 and 7 represented our school at the Junior Novice Gymnastics Festival. All children performed to a very high standard and were proud of their efforts. Thank you to the parents who helped with transport and the many supporters who came to watch. Diana McDonald, Gym Co-ordinator The Cantor Group. Jo Ramsey, parishioner of the Faith Community of St. Peter Chanel and the Hastings Parish has successfully lead the Cantor Group from St. Mary’s for ten years now. This group leads the singing and sings the Responsorial Psalm at Sunday Mass on the first Sunday of each Mass. The school would like to support Jo in continuing this group so we are going to ask students from Year 4 and above to consider joining. It would mean a lunchtime practice on a Friday and a definite commitment to attending the 10am Mass at St. Peter Chanel every first Sunday of the month. We ask parents to talk this through with their children and encourage them to take on this active ministry within the Church – some of the First Communicants could well be interested. Teresa Neilson, D.R.S. ‘STEAM’ at St. Johns College Our Intermediate students have had a fantastic time this term participating in “STEAM’ AT St. Johns College. Once weekly students have taken part in a variety of science, physics, computer science and bio-chemistry lessons. ‘Move It’ Congratulations to all our students who have walked, scooted or cycled to school over the past four weeks. There has been a tremendous response to this programme and we have been thrilled with the efforts students and their parents have made. ‘Move It’ is now finished. It would be great if all our students could continue to come to school by these modes, thus promoting their own health and freeing up our roads from cars. Thank you parents for your support of the programme. Student, Teacher, Parent Conferences These will be held in week 5 of next term on Monday 17 August and Wednesday 19 August. Diary these dates now. The online booking facility for Conference times will be open next term. End of Term Two The school term ends this Friday at 2.50 pm and term three commences on Monday 20 July at 8.50 am. The staff wish you all a warm and relaxing school holiday break with your children! Keeping an ‘Eye Out’ If passing the school during the holiday break at any time of the day or night, we would appreciate you taking a walk/bike/ drive through the property (swing right around behind the Church) Your presence will be a deterrent to vandals. Should you see anything suspicious, please contact the Police immediately. Thank you. Week 11 Happenings at St. Mary’s... Monday Important Upcoming Events ... It is taking place in Hastings from 7-10 September and includes eight different sports as well as social activities to put the emphasis on fun. Seventy schools have already indicated that they are likely to attend, giving us an indicative figure of 1,400 young athletes taking part. Activities are $10 per student, apart from the opening ceremony, which is free. Super Sixes is as much about having fun off the courts and away from the fields as competing on them, and that’s why we have put together some fantastic social activities for students to socialise together. There is a section on this site for FAMILIES. Google nzmaths.co.nz and go to FAQs for families. Sometimes teachers talk about levels in maths and sometimes it’s stages. What’s the difference? Levels: The New Zealand Curriculum includes 4 levels of mathematical content which primary school students are taught. That’s one level of maths content for every two years at school. So Level 1 applies in particular to students in years 1 and 2 at school, Level 2 to students in years 3 and 4, Level 3 applies to students in years 5 and 6, and Level 4 applies to students in year 7 and 8. The levels apply to all parts of maths: number, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. Stages: The stages refer to stages of the Number Framework, and relate to number in particular. Over time, researchers observed that children tend to pass through different stages as they learn to solve number problems. These developmental stages are numbered consecutively. Each stage is a description of things students do, and they are quite different from the prescribed levels of content in the Curriculum.
