Volume 49 June 2013 The mini in Williamsburg, VA in late April was fantastic. Organized by Jim and Bunny Neff, Mike and Maggie Hurd and Dave and Yvonne Campbell, we were treated to an event-packed reunion of 65 men and women. We even met Thomas Jefferson, who greeted us as we were assembling to board our bus to tour a lovely old plantation on Tuesday morning. He spoke about his role in the formation of Virginia and US governance institutions, the writing of the Declaration of Independence, and his views on slavery, among others. We also toured gardens and homes open to the public during Williamsburg Garden Week, had a most interesting series of lectures at the William and Mary, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, as well as a guided tour of the Monitor wing of the Mariner’s Museum. Many of us explored Colonial Williamsburg on our own, some played golf and tennis, and we all dined royally (and probably excessively, if my own waistline is any indication). All in all, it was a very educational and most enjoyable time. Elsewhere in this newsletter are many pictures of the attendees, taken by our unofficial class photographer, Ruth Reeve. During one of the cocktail parties, John Goodrich was inspired to come up with an idea for a mini reunion in Tuscany in 2015. Since that is well beyond my term as class president, I suggested that he contact the new team of officers after they’ve been elected. And speaking of new officers, John Ferries is assembling a small group of classmates to come up with a list of candidates for the class officers who will take over the administration of our class next summer, coincident with our 55th reunion. If you have any suggestions for John to consider, either on the nominating committee or as a prospective officer, please feel free to email him at ferriesj@earthlink.net. By the time you read this, you should have received a new Class Directory, dated April, 2013. Thanks to Al Munro and Jim Bybee, as well as some dedicated work by the Alumni Relations staff, a large number of errors in the earlier (October 2012) version have been corrected. If you haven’t received your copy, please let either Al or me know: amunro1@comcast.net or raybecker@acadia.net, and we’ll be glad to send you one. And if you’d like an extra copy, send Al a check for $8, and he’ll put one in the mail to you. Some of you may have received a letter from me asking for your email addresses so you can be kept informed of significant events and news of other classmates. I’ve received quite a few responses from that letter; if you’re still unsure, I’d urge you to give it a try. Unsubscribing is easy if it turns out to be unsatisfactory or a waste of time…but I’m pretty sure you’ll be a happy camper. Just send me an email, and I’ll put you on the list. Finally, our Hanover mini reunion planners, Dave Marshall and Charlie Pinkerton, are busy putting together a great agenda for our fall gathering in Hanover on October 10 – 12. As a special treat, it is timed to coincide with Homecoming, so there will be the annual alumni parade pep talk and bonfire. The registration form can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Don’t delay in making your plans, as local hotel space will be very hard to come by. -Ray Class Officers: Ray Becker, President - raybecker@acadia.net; Scott Palmer, Vice President - dspalmer@bu.edu; Al Munro, Secretary - amunro1@comcast.net; Art Quirk, Treasurer- artquirk@att,net; Chris Cundey, Alumni Council Rep. cjcundey@comcast.net; Pete Schreier, Class Head Agent - pschreier1@aol.com; Sue and Charlie Pinkerton / Cynthia and Dave Marshall, Mini-Reunions - cpink.nh@gmail.com; dmarsh1754@aol.com; Jim Bybee, Newsletter Editorjbybee@cox.net; Bill Sweet, Bequests & Trusts- wrs37@aol.com; Chuck Donovan, Webmaster – cdonovan@bellsouth.net The Williamsburg/Tidewater Spring Mini-Reunion, as Ray points out, was a sparkling success. Attended by 65 Classmates, Spouses, Girl Friends and Others over a period of four days, it appears at the very least from the photographs that they had a marvelous time. One can nearly conjure up a complete picture (if you will pardon the expression) from the attached collection of photographs. The photographs were all taken by Ruthie Reeve. You could have guessed that they are her work, from their quantity and quality. I have attempted to provide a “summary” set of photos in a format that provides a good example of the whole lot, without overwhelming myself and you, the viewers. For those that cannot get enough from my arbitrary selection, you can get a wonderful summary from a Shutterfly page on the Internet, contact Ruthie at ruthreeve@gmail.com . The point being, we want you to see and share as much of the experience as possible in order to entice you to come and be with us now and then. Our next event is the Hanover Fall Mini as described by Ray Becker on Page 1. We do these every year, in the fall. It is actually the Class Meeting, with as many other things as we can squeeze in as possible. Like Homecoming with its accompanying football game, and a lot of good things to eat. For me, the most exciting part is another chance to see and be with Classmates once again. The Fall Mini tends to be slightly smaller, but it has the potential for a lot of social interaction in a variety of venues. I did a lot of my growing up in Hanover from ’55 to ’59 and every visit is a home coming, along with some precious “family” re-connections in the old familiar places. There are quite a number of Classmates living in the Hanover area now, so the chances of seeing more old friends are good. It also heightens the anticipation for such visits with family and friends from the wonderful past. Everyone living within a half days drive from Hanover should make plans to be there. Look through the photos in this Newsletter and see if you don’t spot someone that you would really enjoy seeing again. You may not get the chance to see them again for a long while. We are getting old, no question about it. So start making plans to come to Hanover in October. I promise that I will buy you a drink. I might even come to the football game and march in Homecoming parade. How great would that be! Make plans and do it. --Jim Bybee Newsletter Editor Page 2 The Williamsburg Mini-Reunion Photo Album Jim and Linda Pinkerton Art Quirk, Robert Watson et al Jane Egner and Laura Werner Kitty Quirk Linda and Jim Pinkerton Fritz Arens and Group Joanne Wise, Lauretta Economou Fritz Arens Susan Boyle, Arlene Johnson Fran Ferese / Chuck Donovan Helen and Lee Gilliatt Stu and Bee Summers Tom and Margo Brackett Joe and Mary Lou Scardapane Art Quirk Dick Hoehn and Friends Lauretta and Stew Economou Doug Wise and Stew Economou Martha and Bill Beshore Jewel and Tippy Blake Arlyss and Ray Becker Joan and Wayne French Jay Herpel and John Goodrich Carol and Mike Hirsh Susan and Bill Boyle Margo and Tom Brackett and Joanne Wise Bill Beshore, Jay Herpel, Joyce Bush Mary and Bob Ogg Jim Neff and Marti Beshore Page Three Bracketts and Economous Jane Kirk and Jay Herpel Donna Margetts and Maggie Hurd Carol Hirsh and Tina Colehower Carol Hirsh and Maryann Goodrich Art Quirk and Robert Watson Tippy Blake and Bill Beshore Jewel and Tippy Blake Ray Becker and Marti Beshore Susan and Bill Boyle, Yvonne Campbell Doug Wise and Wayne French Kitty and Art Quirk Doug and Joanne Wise Carol Hirsh, Kitty Quirk and Jane Egner Ellie Hoehn and Judith Body Dick Hoehn and Dave Campbell Jewell, Margo and Tom Brackett Jim Neff ,Tina, Marilyn, Lauretta, Joan John Goodrich, Robert Watson Arlene Johnson, Fritz Arens B. He was born in Ambon, Indonesia. Ubed entered Dartmouth from Univeritas Airlangga Fracultas Hukum in Surabaya, East Java. He graduated from Dartmouth with a double major in Economics and Geography. Ubed kneels in the first row close to John Towle ‘59 in the Alpha Theta Fraternity picture in the 1959 Aegis. He was a loyal Dartmouth graduate. John Towle remembers Ubed emailing him for John’s bank account number so he could send a gift to the Dartmouth College Fund. Ubed’s daughter-in-law, Shinta Bamahry, emailed that Ubed had fond memories about Dartmouth and his friends. He often talked to his family including his grandchildren for hours about the College. When he took his family to visit Dartmouth several years ago, Shinta felt that she “knew the campus like the palm of her hand”. She added that Ubed was proud to be a Dartmouth alumnus and a member of the Class of 1959. After graduation in 1959 Ubed returned to Jakarta and worked at Pertamina (the National Oil Company) until his retirement in 2003. His last position at the oil company was as the Director of Pension Funds of Oil and Gas. His two sons, his daughter and six grandchildren survive Ubed. Daniel Marvin Nafie Date of Death: December 31, 2011 Daniel Marvin Nafie passed away on December 31, 2011 in Grass Valley, California. He entered Dartmouth from Clifford J. Scott High School, East Orange, New Jersey. In high school, Dan was a talented athlete, co-captaining the football and basketball teams and playing varsity baseball. At Dartmouth, Dan played on the freshman football team before leaving the college after his freshman year. He joined the U.S. Air Force. After the Air Force he was employed by Motorola Corporation in Georgia and rose to Vice President of Two Way Communications. He retired after 25 years with Motorola. After 30 years of marriage, Dan’s wife, Carol Lee, passed away in 1994. After he remarried, he lived in Las Vegas for three or four years until his wife, Sakae, passed away. Dan moved to Grass Valley, California to be near his oldest daughter, Danielle Rubino. Dan enjoyed skiing and fishing. He was a huge golf enthusiast and was a strong player. When he became ill with PSP (Progressive Subranuclear Palsy) he moved in with Danielle. He suffered with this progressively debilitating disease for several years before succumbing to it. His two daughters, four brothers, a sister and six grandchildren survive him. Page Eight Paul Clyde Downing Paul Clyde Downing passed away on March 7, 2013 at his home in Intervale, New Hampshire. He moved to Intervale in 2006 after living his entire life in Saugus, Massachusetts. Paul entered Dartmouth from Saugus High School. At Saugus High School he was Class Vice President his senior year and was a National Honor Society and Student Council member. He was in the Glee Club and played varsity football his junior and senior years. At Dartmouth, Paul was a brother of Chi Phi and President his senior year. He was active in the Dormitory Committee, Interfraternity Treasurers Council, Shocktroop Club, and Marine Platoon Leader Class and during his freshman year on the Crew Team. Linda, his wife, met at Chi Phi in May 1961 and were married the following August. They would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in May 2013. After Dartmouth, Paul tried corporate life at B.F.Goodrich, Akron, Ohio but soon decided to return home to teach English, his Dartmouth major, for 40 years at Saugus High School. Greg Stark ’5 9, a fraternity brother, says that when Paul retired it was like a second “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”, with the school naming the classroom he used for 40 years in his honor. Greg and Paul stayed in touch and had fun talking about Carnival, The College and good times at Chi Phi. One of Paul’s Saugus High School students was Bob Gaudet ‘81 who is now the Dartmouth Men’s Hockey Coach. Bob emailed that Paul was very influential in his life: “Paul saw the potential in me to attend Dartmouth and helped give me the confidence to succeed at Dartmouth. He was a wonderful teacher and role model and was a great man. Our relationship grew from teacher/student to friendship over the years. Paul cheered for the Dartmouth hockey team and always cared so much about me and my family”. Paul even taught his own sister, Evelyn, and loved it when she had to call him Mr. Downing. John Miller ’59, a Chi Phi brother, pays tribute to Paul: “Paul had that rare gift that everyone who met him liked him. He always had time for a smile and a friendly word. He exemplified what, at the time, made a Dartmouth man”. Dick Press ’59 adds: Paul was as “bombastic and joyful” as ever at our 50 th Reunion when we celebrated at Chi Phi. As a former student of Paul’s wrote: “The measure of a life well lived is not how much money we had nor what possessions we have accumulated, but rather the lives we touched and the sorrow we leave behind…you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived and loved by so many”. Paul was a softball and soccer coach when his children played and served as a Warden of Prankers Pond for 25 years. Linda says he liked to move around the pond at night making ghost noises to discourage teenagers from fooling around. Paul loved the theatre. Linda and he had season tickets to the North Shore Music Theatre for 45 years. Paul worked for 17 years at a local liquor store where he held court with friends and former students. Paul had the honor of presenting the Dartmouth Book Prize to his granddaughter when she graduated from Saugus High School. A friend eulogized at his funeral that Paul was the happiest person she had ever met. He lived by the mantra “Don’t worry; be happy!” His wife, Linda, sons Michael and Christopher, daughter Susan and two granddaughters, Nicole and Marissa, survive him. Page Nine George H.
