It will emphasize the development of fluency and accuracy. 6-8 Students will learn and review grammatical features such as verb tenses, the parts of speech, sentence patterns, pronouns, troublesome verbs, and subject-verb agreement. This course develops key cognitive skills such as analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating - as well as developing the language skills essential for academic success. www.vanwest.com 14 | 15 PM2 Electives Class Name Listening Tactics 1 Levels 1-3 Description This course breaks down the selective listening process into understandable parts where participants are taught how to control distractions, concentrate on the message and interpret messages as they listen. Learners are guided through various types of practice as they participate in short conversation on familiar topics. Power Speaking 1 Students will practice simple phrases used in everyday English social situations, and sentences containing new and 1-3 familiar vocabulary. For example, students will learn and practice how to give responses to yes/no and wh- questions in familiar contexts, give oral descriptions of routine activities, objects, people and places, and learn strategies to check for comprehension. Individuals will study and practice the essential aspects of pronunciation. The first level focuses on sound production and correction. The students will learn to form and contrast vowel sounds such as /iy/ and /e/, and to distinguish the sounds of Pronunciation 1 1+ consonants such as /p/ and /b/ and /t/ and /d/. Upon successful completion of this course the learner will be able to distinguish, form, and recognize the different English vowel and consonant sounds. A substantial amount of time is spent on oral practice with linking, contractions, stress and intonation and rhythm patterns Power Speaking 2 4-5 being the foundation of the program. Students will practice stress patterns in multi-syllable words and learn to identify content words in sentences and interrogative words in questions. Class work includes extensive practice with linking, reductions, stress, rhythm and intonation. Students will 5+ learn to recognize and reproduce the sound patterns of statements and questions, as well as greetings, commands, offers and requests. This class's focus on business dialogue will improve both speaking and listening scores on BULATS and similar tests. This course emphasizes natural, impromptu speech and will greatly improve speaking confidence in stressful English speaking situations. Students will practice and record unscripted weekly video journals on everyday high-interest topics. Digital Expression 5+ Through the use of activities using video and social media, student’s pronunciation and fluency will improve while learning new vocabulary, idioms and everyday expressions. Journals are uploaded weekly and students will receive direct teacher and group feedback. Learners should bring their iPhone and be prepared to speak –speak – speak! This course emphasizes strategies to develop listening skills at an advanced level. Students, listening to a range of subject materials varying in length and complexity, will learn how to predict before listening, and how to identify main ideas in Listening Tactics 3 6+ lectures and presentations. Learners will be taught how to take effective notes while listening for particular details. This class includes student presentations (group, pair, individual). Presentations will be videotaped and the class will watch the presentations and give critical analysis/feedback to their peers. Feedback will be based upon a pre-established rubric that outlines what the requirements are to be successful. Students will explore one documentary per week. Video documentaries are a springboard to encourage critical thinking on Think, Speak, Write 3 non-sensitive issues, expand vocabulary, and increase listening and pronunciation skills at an advanced level culminating in 6+ a written response. Written responses will be completed in-class at the end of the week with students taking turn to present.
