L E T H B R I D G E • A L B E R TA • C A N A DA About Let hbridgeABOUT LETHBRIDGE Lethbridge residents enjoy a comfortable, dry climate with warm summers and mild winters. In fact, Lethbridge has the mildest Canadian climate east of British Columbia and Southern Alberta enjoys the greatest number of hours of sunshine per year in Canada. Its proximity to the Rocky Mountains provide Chinook winds which warm in winter and cool in summer. Lethbridge is Alberta’s third largest city, with a population of over 70,000. Even growth has allowed for well-planned streets, parks, recreational facilities, and business and residential neighborhoods – making Lethbridge a remarkably easy city to navigate. Lethbridge is currently enjoying record construction rates in both commercial and residential sectors which is evidence of its vitality. Lethbridge has also often been voted one of the cleanest and prettiest cities in the country. In September 1999, Lethbridge entered in the World in Bloom" Competition and was awarded a total of 5 blooms out of a possible 5 with special recognition for "coulee conservation" in the Communities in Bloom International category. Few cities the size of Lethbridge have as many opportunities for recreation. Parks, lakes, golf courses, fitness centres, swimming pools and sports facilities make it the ideal place to host virtually any sport or physical activity. From equestrian trails in Pavan Park, to fishing in several city lakes, almost any activity can be enjoyed in Lethbridge. With the friendliness of a small town, but the opportunities of a large city, the diverstiy of opportunity is enhanced by the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge Community College and the Research Station. The citizens of Lethbridge welcome visitors with pride in what it has to offer. On the cultural scene: Lethbridge is home to the Yates and Sterndale Bennet Theatres, Sir Alexander Galt Museum & Archives, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, Fort Whoop-Up Interpretive Centre, the Bowman Arts Centre, and the University of Lethbridge Performing Arts Centre and the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery. The Downtown is the heart of the Lethbridge cultural scene and it houses many restaurants, coffee and cappuccino bars, bistros and nightclubs. It boasts one of the biggest revitalization zones around, with over 700 businesses in the area, making for many kinds of activity with a variety of special events, many of them in the summer in the city’s urban heart – Galt Gardens. Lethbridge is also easy to access for visitors. Being located at the crossroads of four major highways, and with many daily scheduled flights through the Lethbridge airport connecting to Edmonton via Integra Air and Calgary via Air Canada Jazz, Lethbridge visitors have a variety of travel options to choose from and a variety of things to do. To the west, spectacular mountains lure visitors and locals to Waterton Lakes National Park. Driving southwest to Waterton from Lethbridge, the mountains rise above the prairie in a sudden and spectacular sweep. To the north, foothills smooth the transition between prairie and the mountains, and to the south, travelers are greeted by the beauty of dryland prairie, agricultural lands and softly rolling hills. The U.S. border and Montana are only 1 hour away. L E T H B R I D G E • A L B E R TA • C A N A DA Let hbridge Highlights ABOUT LETHBRIDGE Parks The City of Lethbridge maintains 4,300 acres of urban parks. This system of parks has been developed along the beautiful Oldman River as it meanders through the city in a deep wooded valley. Residents are often seen walking, jogging, roller blading and cycling through the parks and trails in almost every type of weather. Some of the lakes that are located within the city’s parks are stocked with fish, including trout. As well as the parks, 70 green strips, small playgrounds and fields are located in various areas throughout the city. Nestled amongst the cottonwoods and coulees of the Oldman River Valley and framed beneath the magnificent High Level Bridge, the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre introduces visitors to the 81-hectare Lethbridge Nature Reserve. The Centre itself provides a variety of programs such as nature walks, self-guided trails, exhibits and children's programs on a year-round basis. Henderson Lake Park located on Mayor Magrath Drive and South Parkside Drive features a 60 acre man made lake with concessions, picnic areas and playgrounds. The park has a variety of trails for walkers, joggers and cyclists. A campground is located next to the park. Nicholas Sheran Park located in West Lethbridge, was first introduced as a regional park concept in 1969, was positioned and constructed in 1974. The original design of the park was based on concepts that have functioned beautifully for the past 20 years and have also created opportunities for change as the park matures and the community grows. Museum Lethbridge is also home to the Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives where guided and self guided tours, frequently changing exhibits, and numerous special events and programs bring 100 years of Southern Alberta heritage to life. Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden The Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, located adjacent to Henderson Lake Park, is a summer tourist attraction in which visitors are given the opportunity to experience Japanese culture as well as viewing the breathtaking gardens. High Level Bridge The High Level Bridge completed in 1909 is the longest and highest of its type of construction in North America, extending over 1.6 Km across the coulees to Lethbridge. It is 314 feet high. L E T H B R I D G E • A L B E R TA • C A N A DA City Services ABOUT LETHBRIDGE The City of Lethbridge maintains 4,300 acres of urban park. This system of parks has been developed along the Oldman River which meanders through the city in the area’s famous coulees. As well, a large number of green strips, small playgrounds and fields are located in various areas throughout the city. This. coupled with a wealth of pools, sport fields, and arenas, makes Lethbridge ideal for holding major sport competitions. The City of Lethbridge has developed a system to help organizations host events within the City of Lethbridge. If the event or some aspect of the event is to be held in or on a city park, roadway or public open space, a special event permit is required from the city’s Leisure Services Department-3rd floor, 910-4 Ave. S. (403) 320-3011. These registered events, in receipt of a City of Lethbridge permit will take precedence over all unregistered events, should a conflict for use of space arise. The City of Lethbridge encourages and supports this type of participation within the city by providing services such as delivering bleachers, and picking up garbage. A Community Event van and a show mobile are just two of the ideas that may be useful to your organization. More information or answers to your questions or concerns is available by calling 320-3011. TRANSPORTATION: The use of buses provided by Lethbridge Transit in conjunction with smaller passenger vans, courtesy of local car dealerships, has provided effective and efficient shuttle and transportation service when Lethbridge has hosted other large events in the city. Major arterial roadways link the downtown core to all hotels and motels as well as most city facilities. DINING AND SHOPPING: Well over 100 restaurants, from fine dining and trendy eateries to fast food outlets and coffee houses are found throughout the city. After-hours clubs and pubs cater to all tastes; there are establishments offering pleasant, intimate surroundings, high energy rock and roll, country, and English style pub ambience. The city is southern Alberta's shopping mecca, featuring seven shopping centres and vibrant downtown area with ample parking and quick access. Because Lethbridge serves as the hub for a trading area of about 275,000 people, the city has more retail and personal services than would normally be found in a city its size.
