PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Enjoyable weather prevailed
for most of July and the forecast is for a
hotter August which will bring on some
good looking field crops as well as local
gardens.
I am also looking forward to September when we start back to regular programming at our
Friendly Centre! September is when we start-up our annual fun(d) raising events. Last year we had to defer the Annual President’s Dinner as Nord-Bridge was co-host of the
very successful Grey Matters Conference. In October, we
will be attending the Grey Matters Conference in Red
Deer.
We will be holding our “5th Annual President’s
Dinner & Auction” on Tuesday, September 16. Don’t
forget to bring your auction item to Nord-Bridge soon as
we are collecting items now. The Auction time is changed
and will start at 5 pm followed by supper and entertainment by the CLASSIC LEGENDS. Community members
are welcome, so bring your friends and family!
At our last Finance Committee meeting we were
advised that we had adequate funds to match the
$109,000 grant we received in the past year, thanks to the
successful fundraising events held in the past years.
Randy has most of the contracts completed for the external improvements to our building. These improvements
will also enhance the visible profile of our Centre. There
are a number of people who think our Centre is still the
best kept secret in Lethbridge!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Greetings Members;
This month you will be seeing NordBridge support the Lethbridge Whoop-up
Days celebration. Activities kickoff with the
parade on Tuesday, August 19 (Whoop-Up
Days continues through Aug 23). The NordRandy Smith
Bridge Whoop-up Pancake Breakfast will
run Wednesday, August 20, from 8:00 to
11:00 am. This event will feature entertainment from our
Nord-Bridge Jammers, and great food supplied by various
City businesses, and ably cooked and served by a large
team of dedicated volunteers.
We have celebrated Whoop-up Days for many years at
Nord-Bridge, likely since our move to the City’s Bill Kergan
building on 13th Street in 1984. (Nord-Bridge was established at the Westminster Community Centre in 1980). In the
early days, we always set up bleachers or chairs in the Kergan parking lot to watch the parade. We featured various
meal events, some served from the parking lot (along with a
turkey dinner served at the Exhibition). Today’s Pancake
Breakfast format started in 2001.
In connection with Whoop-up Days, musical entertainment has always been a major part of the Centre’s
programming. At the Kergan, Whoop-up entertainers included the late Bob Ankill, Ernie Komm, and Annie Olsen.
Life members Oscar Odney and Clark Figenshau also supported the event. The Outreach Program also benefitted
from the above musical performers, along with musicians Bill
Oleksy, Evelyn Beattie, Tom & Curt, and the Nord-Bridge
Music Makers. At our new Centre the Monday Jam program started in 2001 with musicians Doug Youngren, Roy
Swidinsky, Dean Oseen, Gladys Rushfeldt, Anne Pauls,
Johnny Andrejcin, Bart Kesler, Nick Bloudoff and others. To
this list of musicians supporting Nord-Bridge add Floyd

LOGO HISTORY
The Nord-Bridge Seniors logo represents
three people linked together, after the fashion of
the Lethbridge Canadian Pacific High Level
Bridge. Just as the crisscrossing of the support
beams within the trestle adds strength to a bridge, seniors linked
together in friendship, activity and unity receive strength from
one another. The colors of the logo represent the diversity of
individual members within Nord-Bridge, and pays tribute to the
many ethnic origins and histories of our City residents. NordBridge prides itself as being “the Friendly Centre”. We hope you
remember this message each time you look at our logo.

From the Desk of Val
Programmer’s Report by
July has been a quiet month, but Heather and I have
been busy reorganizing the Front Desk, cleaning up computer
files and researching Outreach and Travel Programs. Soon
we’ll be organized and ready to welcome you all back and sign
you up for our fall programs, fall trips, plus new and renewed
memberships with a friendly smile. We would like to update our
member’s photos for our New Photo Gallery. Stop by for a new photo the next
time you are looking particularly beautiful or handsome!
Thanks to my volunteers for coming in this past month to do one shift.
We welcome Wendy Redel who has been filling in while the regular volunteers
have been away. Come fall, Wendy will assume her regularly scheduled weekly Wednesday afternoon shift which was previously held by Roberta Soenen.
Roberta has decided to take a rest after working at the Front Desk for a number of years but will fill in as needed. All volunteers: Mark your calendar for
a welcome back coffee chit chat on Monday, September 8 th at 1:30 p.m.
Our summer trips have gone well with everyone coming back to tell us
what a great time they had, especially the MYSTERY TRIPS; seven in total
and all sold out. The trips fill up fast so sign up early or you’ll miss some great
outings. Like the saying goes, “You snooze, you lose!” Effective October 1,
non-members will have to pay an additional $20 (up from $10) when going on
our trips. We would like everyone to become a member of our Centre. Our
fees are reasonable so there is no need to pay extra for a trip – you will not
regret being a member at Nord-Bridge.
David
We are hoping AUGUST brings lots of sunshine (especially yours truly
who will take a break at the end of the month). Drop by your Friendly Centre
for a coffee or try a tasty ice cream sandwich or banana split which our kitchen
staff will be happy to make for you in the hot days to come. Valerie
Our office is more than happy to assist you in navigating
your way through Federal Government services.
We regularly help constituents:
 Contact Federal departments and agencies;
 Obtain Canadian pins and flags;
 Request a meeting;
 Make claim inquires about Employment Insurance,
Canada Pension Plan, or Citizenship and Immigration;
 Order congratulatory certificates for birthdays or anniversaries;
 Access information on Government legislation, and
 Submit a petition to the House of Commons.
These are just a few ways we can be of service to you. If you
have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact my office.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow, children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon.
There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who anoint them for burial with greedy claws
And murder them for a merchants profit and gain.
There are men too gentle for a corporate world

There are men too gentle for an accountant’s world
Who dream instead of Easter eggs and fragrant grass.
And search for beauty in the mystery of the sky.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES by Eva Deringer
We don't have any special luncheons planned for July or
August but we have plenty of summer activities for our members.
This summer our Monday Morning (10 a.m.) Music Jams will continue. Stop in and enjoy the music in our nicely air-conditioned Dunford Diner where you can also enjoy coffee, snacks, homemade
soups, meals, and ice cream sandwiches or banana splits.
Don’t forget our Whoop-Up Toonie Pancake Breakfast on
Wednesday, August 20 th. Wear your western duds and join us for
a traditional breakfast of pancakes, sausage, & beverages, and enjoy the sounds of our “Nord-Bridge Jammers”. Yahoo!
Helen Gepneris is working out the details of another “NordBridge Jam Night”, featuring the music of our own “Nord-Bridge
Jammers” on Friday, October 24. Tickets will be available in advance at Nord-Bridge and at the door.
GO BULLS GO!
During June & July, 29 Nord-Bridge
members & friends helped out the Lethbridge
Bulls by volunteering at all home games. Our
members sold game programs and manned
admission gates which helped the Bulls limit
“gate jumpers” thereby improving their bottom
line. The Bulls finished in first place and we wish them well in the
upcoming Western Major Baseball League playoffs beginning Friday, August 1, at Spitz Stadium. Nord-Bridge volunteers included:
Marie Areshanko, Val Arkinstall, Katrina Baylock, Jordan & Tracy Beauchemin, Mike, Diane & Amy Bennett, Pat Chizek, Lil
Colwill, Eva Deringer, Judy Enevold, Donna Farkas, Ali Freng,
Charlotte George, Hugh Gordon, Rodger Halvorsen, Riley Johnson, Clara LaPointe, Marie Lundgren, Johanna McKenzie, Bill
McTighe, Randy Smith, Roberta Svennes, Donna Takeda, Bob
Tarleck, Shirley Trefan, Frances Wallace, Naomi Yamada and
Volunteer Co-Ordinator Delores Bourk. Delores reported that our
volunteers thoroughly enjoyed their assignments and many have
stepped up to cover the playoff games. She also noted that building
co-operative relationships with community organizations helps our
own programs and special events by generating reciprocal support.

new state-of-the-art bingo console, including two, new number display boards. Frances’ $10,000 donation made this
much needed upgrade possible. Frances demonstrated a
wonderful example of charitable giving, by supporting NordBridge, her Centre, where she spends time with friends and
volunteers. Donating to charities that a person is personally
involved at is a great way to support the community, the individual member, and their friends. In Frances’ case, she
choose to make a gift of stock shares to the Centre. Thus
instead of incurring a capital gain which would have been
taxed by the federal government, she transferred shares, and
received a tax receipt from Nord-Bridge for the current value
of the shares. Nord-Bridge could in turn redeem the shares
without capital gains tax implications. Thus the donation
provided benefits to both parties. The equipment will also
help future Nord-Bridge fundraising.
Our In-House Bingo generated $18,538 in 2013, a significant amount, which benefits all Centre programming. InHouse Bingo volunteers include: Clay Olsen, Harry Fischer,
Frances Wallace, Shirley Cavanaugh, Eva Deringer, Janet Bobinec, Donna Takada, Blaine Hyggen, Pat Chizek and others.
We thank Frances and all of her fellow volunteers.

July was a busy month for travel. We offered two fantastic MYSTERY TRIPS. The first one went to the Ft. Macleod Buffalo Jump where we watched the First Nations Drum and Dance
program on a hot afternoon. The second trip journeyed to Nanton to
the World of Miniatures Museum on another hot-humid day. Our
Annual Waterton Lakes visit was another exciting adventure, travelling on the Care Free Express luxury bus. We also took in a local
Yates show starring the Big Band with guests, Jeff Carlson and
Mark Campbell, in a performance of “The Ritz”. Thanks to drivers,
Jack, Lucy and (new driver) Pat.
