It is events such as this one that strengthen the industry as a whole by drawing attention to Canadian productions, developing talent and fostering creative collaboration. At Telefilm, our objective is to support talent throughout Canada, and to encourage the production of content that appeals to audiences at home and abroad. Our cinema entertains, enlightens, informs and challenges; it fosters dialogue about our identity and our values. It represents us on the international stage, shapes our sense of belonging and contributes to the diversity of our society. Thank you to the organizers of Reel 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth for bringing us together year after year. This event will provide festival-goers with an opportunity to discover outstanding works and to enjoy the latest in home-grown cinema. Enjoy the festival! ------Michel Roy------ Chair of the Board, Telefilm Canada MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a parent, filmmaker and, now, as chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada, I believe we have a responsibility to ensure that Canadian youth have the option of enjoying quality, socially responsible, made-in-Canada media productions – and the know-how and tools to create their own. I know that Reel 2 Real shares our commitment. For over a decade, it has been active in helping young audiences to go beyond the traditional movie-going experience and deepen their understanding of filmmaking — be it through connecting with directors or acquiring actual handson media-creation expertise. That’s why we’re delighted to again be a part of R2R. And why we’re complementing our great selection of NFB films for youth with outstanding festival activities. Once again this year, we’re providing three animation workstations so young festival-goers can learn how to create their own animated tales and make some movie magic of their own. We’re again presenting the Best Animated Film Award as part of the NFB’s ongoing commitment to animation excellence in every region of Canada. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to visit our online Screening Room – we’re celebrating its first anniversary by adding High Definition and 3D films to a collection of over 1,400 productions already accessible there. Watch them on the web or on our popular new NFB iPhone app. Visit <NFB.ca> today and start watching! ------Tom Perlmutter-----Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada REEL 2 REAL ONLINE AUCTION The cuts in provincial funding for the arts are having a disastrous impact on arts organizations across the Province. These cuts meant that Reel 2 Real had to curtail the popular animation workshops offered year-round at the Museum of Vancouver. In an effort to make up for this unexpected funding shortfall, Reel 2 Real launched an online auction in January 2010. We would like to thank all who participated in our online auction: Real Decoy who created the auction site, the generous donors who supplied our items, everyone who forwarded the link to friends and family, and all of our bidders. Thank you for helping us to make a difference in the lives of youth. In German with English subtitles Ten-year-old Hannes must pass a dare before he can join the coolest group of kids in town, known as the Crocodiles. He must climb the roof of the old brickyard. On his way down, the rusty ladder gives way. Kai, who had an accident that left him quadriplegic, sees Hannes dangling from the roof through his telescope and calls for help. The Crocodiles are grateful, but divided. Hannes suggests making Kai a Crocodile, but the others are against it. How can wheelchair-bound Kai be a useful member? Everything changes when the shop run by Hannes’ Mom is robbed, and Kai’s unique skills are needed to help the Crocodiles on their quest to catch the thieves. DIARIES 13+ Diari Attilio Azzola / Italy / 2008 / 93 min Three different characters are brought together by chance: sixteen-year-old Leo is looking for a way to reach her father, who left her ten years ago; Alì Trabelsi is a talented manga artist who tries to win the love of his schoolmate, creating a parallel identity on the web; and Michele Mancia is a distinguished retired professor with two great passions: old tango melodies and his love for Maria. The film was awarded the Grand Prix Ecrans Juniors award at the 2008 Cannes film festival. PG: course language FRENCH GIRL 13+ Française Souad El-Bouhati / France/Morocco / 2008 / 84 min In French with English subtitles “So which are you: French, African, Moroccan or Arab?” This loaded question is posed to ten-year-old Sophia, the middle daughter of a Moroccan family living in a French suburb. When her father suddenly finds himself out of work, the family must return to their homeland. Eight years later, Sofia is a precocious, questioning and headstrong university student, who rebels against Moroccan tradition and becomes consumed by an overwhelming desire to return to her beloved France. Souad El-Bouhati’s finely observed debut feature explores issues of origin, dislocation, hybrid identity, and cultural contradiction. 10 HUNGRY HILLS 13+ Rob King / Canada / 2009 / 92 min In Italian with English subtitles PG: violence George Ryga’s After two years in a welfare residence for boys, fifteen-year-old Snit Mandolin is eager to return home to his family farm in Saskatchewan, and his reclusive Aunt Matilda. Faced by a community that still shuns him, confronted by the impossibility of surviving on his aunt’s farm, Snit falls in with Johnny Swift, who makes moonshine and sells it through a local bootlegger. The boys work together and become fast friends. Soon Snit finds first love with a free-spirited local girl, Robin. Their adventure is interrupted by the enigmatic and unpredictable Roy Kane, the district’s private cop, who uses the boys to get to the bootlegger. Dogged by Kane, betrayed by a bootlegger and plagued by the ghosts of the past, the boys’ friendship is broken. Alone once more in the community that rejected him, Snit comes to a violent crossroads. This beautiful adaptation of the acclaimed Canadian novel by George Ryga stars two Vancouver actors, Gabrielle Rose and Alexia Fast. Gary Fisher wrote the screenplay. PG: course language; violence THE INDIAN 6+ De indiaan Ineke Houtman / Netherlands / 2009 / 90 min In Dutch with English subtitles Eight-year-old Koos is very close to his loving Dutch parents who adopted him from Peru when he was a baby. When he finds out that his mother is expecting a baby, Koos worries that his parents won’t love him as much as their own biological baby. Through a chance meeting with a Peruvian boy named Illari, Koos learns that he is an Indian and a descendant of the Inca people. Determined to embrace his roots, Koos goes on a journey of self-discovery in order to find out who he really is and where he comes from. This sensitive and insightful film looks at the fears and curiosities some adopted children experience. The Indian is also a wonderful reminder that the love between a parent and child isn’t defined by geography or ancestry, but by the love a family shares with one another. 11 SCHOOL DAYS WITH A PIG 8+ Buta gaita Kyoushitsu Tetsu Maeda / Japan / 2008 / 106 min THE SECRET OF KELLS 8+ Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey / Ireland/France/ Belgium / 2009 / 75 min English subtitles will be read aloud by an experienced reader. He decides that in their final year of elementary school, the class will adopt a piglet and care for it over the course of a year, but at the end of the year, the pig will be eaten. The students eagerly accept the challenge. They name the piglet “P-Chan,” build a home for it, and take turns caring for it. The more attached they grow to P-Chan, the more difficult the question of the pig’s fate becomes. Based on a true story that became a subject of national controversy in Japan, School Days With a Pig is a thoughtful and warmhearted engagement with issues of consumption, quality of life, and personal responsibility. Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. A new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. Reel Focus workshops include: Claymation, Cut-Out Animation, Chalk Animation, Digital Filmmaking, Green Screen, Handmade Film, Pixilation, and Storyboarding. Talent Lab (April 16) Talent Lab aims to ensure that students are inspired and equipped to analyze, appreciate, explore, create and share screen media. Through film viewing and master classes, students get to work with and learn from some of Vancouver’s top film industry professionals. Students attend a program of short films in the morning, and a workshop of their choice in the afternoon. The goal of the Talent Lab Master Classes is to give students a chance to work with a professional artist in their area of expertise. Master Classes are lecturebased with some hands-on activities and interactive discussions, providing students with new insights, skills, and creative ideas. This program is recommended for high school students in grades 8-12. School groups and individual students are welcome. Master Classes include: Animation, Digital Filmmaking, Directing, Documentary, Green Screen, Screenwriting, Sound Design, and Writing for Shorts. Youth Jury Program Our Youth Jury Program fosters a deeper appreciation for independent film from Canada and around the globe. This popular program includes a feature film screening, followed by a free workshop in film criticism. A challenging and interactive experience, students sharpen their critical eye, gain an appreciation for different genres of film, and learn what makes a film great. Two Youth Juries are chosen from among many successful workshop graduates (ages 9-12 and 13-19). These juries evaluate every film in their age category, and chose the award winners. Young Filmmakers Showcase Sunday, April 11, 5:00 pm at the Vancity Theatre Join us to celebrate the work of talented young filmmakers from British Columbia. All submissions can be viewed on our website. A one-hour program of selected films will be screened, and are eligible to win one of five prizes. Year-round programs In our effort to seek innovative ways to engage youth in discovering their community’s stories and learning the history of our multicultural city, Reel to Real also presents a variety of year-round programs and screenings. Animating History is an innovative workshop program for youth that connects media literacy and storytelling with building a sense of community through the creative exploration of local history. During these workshops youth create a one-minute historical animated film at the Museum of Vancouver and Port Moody Station Museum. Students work with a professional animator and learn “hands on” all parts of the animation process. The full day course includes a museum tour, storyboarding the film’s plot, art making, camera-work, and editing. BC Stories empowers youth in inner-city and rural schools to conceive, plan, shoot, edit, and screen short animated films that speak about their lives, language and community. The workshops provide low income and Aboriginal youth unprecedented access to innovative training and facilities for digital image making. The program also improves access to media arts and technology education to the many talented youth who are not served by the traditional education system. Family Films Series Throughout the year, children ages eight and up can enjoy Sunday afternoon screenings of the best international children’s films.
