2012-2013 Nippers Annual Report NORTH NARRABEEN SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC Affiliated with the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia NORTH NARRABEEN JUNIOR SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB www.northnarraslsc.weebly.com North Narrabeen SLSC Junior Activities Committee Minutes of the Annual General Meeting Held on 18th March 2012 Commencing at 2pm Present See Attendance Sheet Welcome Peter Smyth (Chairperson) opened the meeting at 2pm. Peter welcomed all Nippers and their families to the meeting. Previous AGM Minutes Moved by Peter Smyth and seconded by Geoff Halpin that the previous minutes be accepted. General Business Peter thanked the Executive Committee members, all the Age Managers and Coaches for their efforts during the season. Committee Positions Peter Smyth stepped down as Chairperson and all positions were declared vacant. Darren Marshall was then elected as Junior Activities Chairperson. A list of positions filled is attached. The meeting closed at 2:20pm. North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 2 President’s Report Well I have to say that it has been a most challenging season after the tragic loss of one our youngest Nippers, Elizabeth Tucker, before the season had even commenced late September 2012. The weather and surf conditions have been less than favourable, especially since Christmas, to the point where we were unable to complete the Club Championships in all age groups which was somewhat disappointing. Despite this, I think we have managed to build on the strong foundations left by Peter Smyth and the outgoing committee and are again in a good position to further develop next season. Before I do get on to some of the highlights of the season I would like to thank all the members of this year’s Junior Committee, not all positions where filled and everyone has been working especially hard this season to keep the engine moving, in particular: Geoff Halpin (Secretary) for your support all season and assistance recruiting age managers. Peter Smyth (Assistant Secretary) for guiding me through my first season as Chairperson. Rob Kaines (Senior Club Treasurer) who stepped in to assist after the resignation of Rod Tucker, Rob’s experience was invaluable. Colleen Hill (Registrar) by default put in a lot of overtime at the start of the season to complete the paperwork and keep the registrations up to date. Josh Holmes (Competition Secretary) who has diligently managed the attendance roles and competition entries, as well as stepping in to fill the Under 10 Age Manager position. Dean Ralston (Newsletter) who has done a fabulous job producing the best SLS newsletter on the Northern Beaches from what I have seen. Glen Jones (Water Safety Officer) for running an efficient operation under challenging conditions most weeks. Sarah Monteleone (Clothing) with regular assistance from Leanne McNeil did a brilliant job looking after the clothing for a second season. Katina Hurd and Kate Marshall (BBQ Coordinators) who, along with Kenny Holmes, have done an awesome job each Sunday morning, often with limited assistance All of these tasks are unrelenting and we couldn’t manage without anyone of them, your commitment to the Club is most appreciated. A big thank you also goes out to all of the Age Managers, many in their first season, who have the arduous task of channeling a lot of youthful energy each week, and from what I can see have all made excellent progress. Thanks also to Janice Wordley, Senior Club President, and Senior Club Committee who have provided financial assistance as well as resources for proficiency assessments and valuable advice throughout the season. North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 3 As for highlights of the season I would have to say our March Past team at the Northern Beaches Branch Championships was pretty special; it is amazing what can be achieved in a short period with a little bit of hard work and dedication! Well done and a big thank you to Leanne Hickey and Antionella Ryan for coaching the team. Not to be outdone, Jason Smyth picked up our only Gold medal at the Branch Championships and backed it up with a Bronze at the State Championships; our first State medal for a couple of Years now. Congratulations Jason! There were plenty of other great results at all of this season’s carnivals and hopefully we can build on that and turn them into gold medals next season. Thanks to our major sponsor ‘Eden Brae Homes’; enabling us once again to kit out our carnival competitors in new ‘high-vis’ lycra singlets and sell them at a subsidised cost to all Club members. Thanks also to ‘Entendre Group’ for design and distribution of our weekly newsletter, the Newport Arms Hotel for providing awards and Bonds for provision of rashies; your support is greatly appreciated. As everyone takes to their respective winter sports please consider what you can do for the Club next year. We operated quite lean this season and it isn’t sustainable going forward. We can only continue to develop if we have more Age Managers, Water Safety and Committee Members, so before the commencement of next season we will again be looking for parents to undertake Bronze Training, Officials Courses or even just helping out at a clean-up day. Personally, I can see so much opportunity but it won’t be realised without adequate support and guidance. Finally I would like to thank all the parents and kids for a fun season. Whilst I love to see the kids compete well, the expression on an Under 9’s face after the crack at a great wave or get ‘smoked’ by a big set is still something I get a kick out every time I go to the beach. North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 5 Age Manager’s Reports Under 6 girls I really can’t believe how quick this year went. I remember more than fifty girls showing up on the first Sunday of the season. Luckily there were Fiona, Fran, Kirralee, Jeroen and a good number of helping parents to keep these very energetic girls going during the Nippers sessions. Busy we were indeed as the morning was always fully packed with lots of activities. During the year the girls have greatly improved their sprinting as we would usually start the day with a couple of sprints (to warm up those muscles) followed by a relay and flags. With the relays we did not only improve our beach sprinting skills but also our concentration (where do I have to run to, after how many runs do I have to sit down etc?) and team work. In that respect we think the girls really improved during the year as we saw some great races in the last couple of weeks. Flags, as mentioned before was of course also part of the fun. I think every girl improved in that area as well. Flags is a combination of many skill e.g. concentration (when can I get up, where are the flags?), reaction (being able to get up quick), sprinting, and diving. During the year we have focused on all these skills and the result is that we now have a number of competitive girls in this discipline. Whilst everybody enjoyed doing flags and relays, I think it is almost an understatement to say that the girls thoroughly enjoyed the water. Unfortunately, Pluvius, the Roman god of rain, was not very kind to us this season so the total number of days that we could go in the surf was only two, but fortunately we could go in the lagoon. Every week we would end the day with a wade in the lagoon or a swim in the surf on the days when that was possible. The wades always took place in the lagoon where the water is not too deep and where there is a bit of current. We did many runs through the water and combined the running with a bit of swimming as well. Everybody showed great swimming skills and we saw many dolphin dives too. Great work there! The days that we were able to get in the surf were big events for the girls. The ocean is big, there are currents and of course waves that can easily knock you over (not to mention sharks and blue bottles) so there was a little bit of uneasiness the first time we went in. However, everybody did go in and we never looked back. We have all conquered the surf – bring out the surf boards! We all think it was a great and I think everybody deserved a trophy, unfortunately we could only give away two trophies and this year the trophies go to Manon and Sophie! Well done everybody and we all hope to see you again in the next season. Fiona Smyth, Jeroen Krabbe, Fran Young, Kirralee Julius Under 6 Boys What a fantastic first year of nippers for the boys. Here is a sport the boys see on TV, and now every Sunday morning in summer, they are all motivated to try a new sport, surf life saving, nippers style. The boys experienced sprints, sprint relays, flags, the North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 6 wade, the swim and the board events. All the children improved throughout the season, gaining valuable experience especially the use of the lake with its different tides and water depth. The boys loved the use of the boards, experiencing "the art of balance", a wonderful sight. With this new found confidence, the boys attempted their first IRON MAN event with great success, WELL DONE BOYS. The boys also enjoyed building sand castles and TUG OF WAR against the parents (untill the rope broke). This season has been very rewarding for Jason and myself, we would just like to thank all the boys for their enthusiasm and participation, THANKS BOYS. We would also like to thank all the parents for bringing the children down to nippers each week as well as assisting us with support and water safety, THANK YOU. Jason Green and Greg Kelly Under 7 Girls The first tentative steps on the sand this year was no reflection of how the girls finished. The confidence gained was amazing to watch throughout the year. There was 35 girls start the year & we regularly had over 20 attend each week. We have some really fast girls in the group constantly pushing each other in a friendly yet competitive nature. This was defined in our last series of flags & sprints against the Under 7 Boys, they really thought the girls were push overs, it was not the case & the girls carried themselves well & were more than competitive. The biggest & most important improvement was in the water. The girls & I mean all the girls grew an extra set of legs when it came to the surf. The conditions all year were not ideal, with dangerous currents & big waves throwing up many reasons for the girls to back out, most pleasing was they didn’t. No squealing, listening & doing what they were told when they were told really made them a pleasure to be with. I can remember a couple of times watching the concern on the Patrols watching nervously only to see them sit down & watch in amazement at the confidence & ability that the girls possessed in the surf. Getting them in was never a drama, getting them out was harder. Special thanks to all the parents that contributed to the achievements of the girls this year, it would not have been possible without you. Hopefully the girls are inspired enough to come back next year. Geoff Halpin and Darren Fairhall Under 7 Boys What a great year for the boys, it was fantastic to see the numbers were up from last year, 39 to 41 boys . Every one excelled this year .The improvement in the water was incredible. Alex was very strong in and out of the ocean . Ashton, improved in flags and went well every time he hit the ocean. Benjamin always tried hard when he was there and became fearless in the water. Boden is getting better with flags and was one of our strongest in the water. Brandon, good to always see you there, great improvement in the flags. Charlie is always polite and keen , big improvement in the ocean. Connor had a great first year he improved out of site and I hope his dreams come true. Daniel Grundy, one of the strong all rounders keep it up. Daniel Kelly we need more like you, great effort all round , very strong. Emilio always went well in flags and pushed him self when he entered the ocean. Ethan was one of our best on the sand, fastest off the mark in flags. Harry swam well and had plenty of pace on the sand. Jai had another great year, one some events early in the season North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 7 and was very polite as usual. Jake Allan, a real competitor, strong all round. Jake Robinson, good effort on the sand and in the ocean. Jason what an improvement ,never stopped trying and was always competing. Jessie Milne, good work , a real character strong at backstroke in the surf. Jessie Roberts did well at flags and gave his all in the surf. Jordan was one of our strongest all rounders once again. Joshua Tydman always put in 100% good work. Josh Myers tried hard whenever he was on the beach or in the surf. Kalan had great second season in all aspects, always thanking me after a session. Lewis went well on the sand and in the ocean this season. Lucas another character had a good year improving with flags and swimming really well . Mason had a sensational first year taking out quite a few flags events and swimming great. Max was a real competitor in his first season and was one of the strong swimmers. Michael had an exceptional season he was always at the front of the pack when racing. Mitchell always goes we'll and even competed with a cast on his arm. Nate was a our number one in the flags and was hard to beat when competing, he also swam strong. Nathan was one of top competitors in flags and could swim with the best of them. Noah had a great year in every aspect. putting in a huge effort . Oscar swam really well, was fast on the sand and always had a big smile. Patrick Familton was always in the running when competing on the beach and in the water. Patrick Felice was consistently with the leaders in the water and had plenty of pace on the sand. Soloman has gone from not going near the water to being told its time to get out , we are finished buddy ,well done. Taj put in a big effort this year always competing well. Toby was one of the quiet achieves improving a huge amount in all areas. Tommy gun had big first year, he always looked like he was loving it ,competing really well in the run swim runs. Billy started the season in great form , swimming exceptionally, but was missed when dad had to work out of state . William Patrick was another one of our best all rounders giving 100 % every week. Zach was also a great all rounder, improving out of sight. I was extra proud of the boys this year, their ocean swimming improved so much and their confidence has grown with that. Thank you boys for making my job so easy, you should all be very proud of your efforts and special thank you to all the parents, it would be impossible without you. Hope to see you all next year. Neil Baker and Sean Wilkinson Under 8 Girls Firstly we would like to say what an enjoyable summer it has been with our group of girls and also with a very supportive group of parents helping out every Sunday- thank you to you all. At the start of the summer we had girls with varying abilities in the water. By the end of the summer the girls have all improved, this is evident by the closeness of the races and the girls wanting to do more water events than beach events. Getting the girls out of the water at the end of summer was harder than getting some of them in at the start of the season. For us that means a successful season, as we did really try to concentrate on the water, rather than the beach. Well done girls. Congratulations to the girls who have won the point scores, the club championships and our age managers’ awards, you fully deserved them. Also thanks must go to Lesley (Imogen’s mum) for being our ghost writer for the newsletter. North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 8 Next year the girls move on to the under 9s which means more time in the surf and on the boards and I hope all the girls come back, especially the out of area girls (bring your friends). Jason Alkire and Peter Smyth Under 8 Boys Congratulations to all the U/8 Boys, you all stepped up this year with each year gaining more confidence and ability. The swimming, running and listening has improved dramaticially from the beginning of the season and the passion for the water is unbelievable (I think by far the favourite event). Good Luck to all the boys, I think its been a great year. A massive Thank you to all the parents that have helped out as Nippers couldn't run smoothly each week without your assistance - so Thank you !! Also well done to all the boys that have competed in the Carnival events, its a lot harder competing against other clubs than your own and it a whole other level of competition - Good Job !! Looking forward to seeing you all next year. Peter Domanski and Adam Cauvin Under 9 Girls This season we set goals for the girls to achieve greater surf awareness, safety and confidence. This included identifying flags on the beach, hand signals, currents and rips. All girls advanced their knowledge and are becoming ever more comfortable within a surf beach environment. Well done This is the first year the girls were allowed to challenge themselves with swimming and board paddling out into the waves and around the marker buoys. This was a major step up for everybody (including a few dads) as most of the girls had only spent time in the lake and pool previously, and of course, being North Narra there was always tough conditions and a fair swell to deal with. The girls consistently tried hard in the swim, showing strength and determination to push out through the waves and body surf some nice waves back in to the beach. On the boards the girls learnt how to roll off and on when paddling out through the waves. There were some entertaining white knuckled rides back to the beach. Special mention to Andrew and Darren for your assistance. On the sand, we worked hard on our starts, reaction time and finishes with some great dives at the flags. Our sprints and relays were also strongly contested with different girls challenging for places each week. We added different starting techniques and as their beach running fitness improved the girls performances increased. General improvement across the group was evident with fierce competition every week. A big thank you to the parents who have helped out throughout the year, I really appreciate your assistance. Being able to swim with your daughter, enabled them to complete the event safely and boost their confidence. Thank you to Paul who has been a great co-age manager, thanks heaps for all your help and support. The girls are getting physically stronger and faster and are keen to give it a go. They love competing hard against each other but more importantly are developing strong team spirit as a group and building some great friendships. They are a great bunch of girls who are always happy with smiling faces and are always respectful, polite and friendly towards each other. Well done to all for a great season of nippers. John Tyson and Paul Millet Under 9 Boys Despite beach & surf conditions being unpredictable we saw a huge improvement in the boys swimming and surf awareness. North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 9 It was great to see most of the boys with their heads down doing freestyle & dolphin diving during the ocean swims. The board racing reached a higher level with the boys learning to judge the waves and Eskimo roll. Once again a big thank you to all the parents who helped out each week and I look forward to seeing you all next season. Mitch Smith Under 10 Girls The under 10 girls have had a wonderful season, showing great sportsmanship and excelling at all of their events. At the start of the season most of the girls didn't like the water events very much at all, now they have conquered the water events showing great confidence in both the swim and the boards and some even competing in the carnivals. They always worked together as a team, and at carnival they received a 3rd place in the relay event, and placed in the flag event too. In the beach sprint they are very competitive and only seconds apart, all trying there hardest to improve their skills. Well done girls. Samantha Fairhall Under 10 Boys The 2012/2013 season saw a core group of boys return for the new season, with Alex, Angus, Fin, Henry, Jai, Ky and Tristan making up the regulars attending. We welcomed 3 new nippers to North Narrabeen under 10’s this year with Calvin, Jonah and Matthew joining us for their first experience at Nippers. All 3 boys learnt the new skills required to participate quickly and enjoyed the weekly competition. Angus, Fin, Henry, Jai and Tristan made up our representative competition group and made strong improvements in all 5 carnivals this season. Henry took several places throughout the season. Congratulations also to our 10’s carnival boys who made up the major part of the North Narrabeen March past team. Back on our own beach, Alex and Ky showed great improvement with Alex taking regular places on the board and Ky consistently taking out the Beach events. The Club Championships were a tough day at the Beach with Angus dominating the water events and Ky winning both Beach events. Congratulations must go to the most consistent and hardworking nipper of the season who always gave his best and achieved placings in all 4 events was Tristan. Josh Holmes Under 11, 12 & 13 Girls. Well another summer season has come to a close. It started out very positively and we had some great conditions up to Christmas and January but came crashing to the ground with a thud in February! Brendan Hulme and myself were the Age Managers for the 11, 12 & 13 year old girls. It was great to join the girls together to give the younger ones some confidence in the surf and also to give the older girls a push along and to try and keep them off social media for more than hour! None the less it was a strong start to the season and we had a combined number of 23 girls registered between the 3 age groups. We also had 18 of these girls proficient which is great. Unfortunately the numbers started to drop steadily over the course of the season and we averaged approximately 12 girls each Sunday. Overall the girls have progressed well, have gained confidence in the surf and even enjoyed catching waves on the board. They have also cemented friendships, which has been great to watch. On behalf of Brendan and myself, I would like to thank all the girls for the year gone and hope to see all of them back again next North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 10 year with renewed confidence and great big smiles. We would also like to thank many of the parents who helped out during the year and it would greatly appreciate if more could help out next year. assistant. To all the boys and your families enjoy the winter months and I hope to see all of you back next season. Great Year Under 11,12 &13 Girls. See you next Year! Under 12 Girls Craig McDonald and Brendan Hulme. Under 11 Boys It only feels like the start of the season and here we are at the end of the nipper’s year again. Whilst we lost some of the boys from last year, we were joined by Tomas a wonderful state pool swimmer who quickly showed us that he was going to be a force in the surf as well. Nathan, Lawrence, Max, Oscar, Michael, Daniel and Mitch all returned for another year and it has been great to see the confidence in all the boys in the water. Whilst Lawrence and Oscar have always had confidence in the surf, the other boys it has not come as quickly and in fact I was not a prouder age manager when a few weeks before the end of the season both Michael and Mitch entered the surf swim in a very long time and both finished in the top 6. A little confidence goes a long way….. All the boys have had a great year on the beach but it has been a tight tussle between Nathan, Lawrence and Mitch in most of the beach activities. Daniel has also improved so much this year especially with his confidence in the surf and on the board. I would like to thank Claire and Kathy and all the parents who have helped me each week but a very big thank you must go to Peter (Tomas’s Dad) who travels close to an hour each week to bring Tomas and the family to nippers but week in, week out is there helping me as my unofficial Vicki Halpin. See Under 11 Girls Under 12 Boys Under 12 Boys were thrown in with the 13’s &14’s this year though you would never have known they were the younger they competed brilliantly against the older kids. Their skills & enthusiasm grew each week as you could see they enjoyed taking on the older kids. With a good core group they turned up weekly & took on anything we threw at them. The surf rescue I think was a favourite with a combination of Ben & Luke (U14) taking out one of our earlier challenges – no one at that time realized how fast Ben was in the water. Well done to all your carnival efforts. Jason winning gold at branch was a brilliant effort. James, Tom & Ben also competing with the NN spirit. Sad to see the Boon family go. Good luck but we now you won’t keep away. Austin, Raff and the rest of the boys it’s always fun having you amongst the group. Hope to see you all next year, It’s been great, Leanne Hickey and Tom Winny U13 Girls See Under 11 Girls U13 Boys Well done boys another great season. Only a small group left but great camaraderie between the boys. Went to all the carnivals and always competed well. Jason & Cam ready & eager to give their all a go in the water. Some great results in both swim & board and very impressive fourth in surf rescue. Jake, Luka & Conor always North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2012/2013 Page 11 competed well with our water boys at NN though at the carnivals were more focused on the beach. Some great results from the carnivals, Conor gained a second in the flags & usually made the finals in the sprint. Jake decided to join the carnival competing at branch and did really well but as it goes luck can be with you or against you. It has been a great season, we joined the 13’s with the 12’s & 14’s this year to make our “Snr” group & how good did they all go. Didn’t matter size or age no one gave an inch to let any other get the better ( unless there was a crash tackle or two) Tom, Mick & Dan are fantastic with the boys improving their skills every week. Well done to all the boys, it’s been fun. Come back next year bring a few friend, it’s the last & we will make it the best. Leanne Hickey and Tom Winny Under 14 Girls We had 2 girls to finish off their nippers career and I believe they are the two longest serving members in their age group. Much to their disgust they had to share most of their events with the U12 and U14 boys. They both enjoyed their last year with the highlights being Jasmine finishing 10th in the swim at the Narrabeen Carnival and I Mick Malone managing to get Kate McKay to do one final swim (honestly it was like asking her to let me perform amateur dentistry). I wish them both the best of luck for their futures and hope they stay associated with Surf Life Saving. The boys attended all the allotted carnivals this year other than state, with some challenging swims, and they had a bit of fun in the board rescue as well, (we all had smiles on our face when they got smashed in the shorey at Queensie) Both Luke and Jye have progress in their surf lifesaving, completing their SRC and patrolling regularly. Also, assisting with water safety week to week. Great work guys, that’s what you set out to achieve in U6s! I’m personally very proud of the boys completing their nippers, as it takes a great deal of commitment over the years as the numbers start to drop. Best of luck in the future boys, I hope to see you competing in the seniors or on patrol. Dan McDonough and Mick Malone Dan McDonough and Mick Malone U14 Boys. Well the season was a bit hit and miss but the boys managed to get a couple good beach days in. Combining with the U13s and U12s for most weeks worked well this year to boost numbers and a little competition.
