Dear Colleagues,
Our recent Dinner and Dance, which began with the auspicious lion dance to usher in
this Year of the Goat, brought us together for an evening of great enjoyment. I was happy
to see the camaraderie among all of us. This is the spirit of our KS family: we encourage
everyone among us to bond together and care for one other.
Each of us has an important role in our Group, and our combined efforts determine our
success. This year, the challenges on the business front will not be less than in the previous
year; hence, let us work in the spirit of the togetherness we shared at the Dinner and
Dance and deliver our best to our customers.
At KS Group, we champion the importance of healthy lifestyles, which are essential to
ensure our wellbeing. The Group has invested in various programmes including weekly
sports events in which all can participate. On our annual Sports Day, during which teams
from KS Energy and Citramas Group meet, we will have another occasion that brings us
together for a day of fun and networking.
Corporate social responsibilities have always been close to our hearts.
As a firm supporter of education, we have established the KS Bursary for employees’
children. This bursary recognises and rewards those of exemplary conduct who excel in
their studies. This will be the second year that this bursary is being awarded.
For our community project this year, we are working with Touch Centre for Independent
Living to create birthday cards for our employees.
I am focusing on employees’ wellbeing in this message because it is important that all
of us remain positive while our industry is facing strong headwinds. At times like this,
we have to coordinate and work even more closely with each other. By tapping on one
other’s strengths and networks, we can help to expand our collective contacts base and
make the most of the opportunities that exist in the markets. I urge everyone to stay
focused, committed, and be ready to seize the opportunities that arise.

Oil & Gas Industry
Review
By Nakul Gupta (KSD)
Weakening Oil Prices
Over the last decade, the rise in oil prices
was driven by strong economic growth
from the developing economies, steady
demand from the developed world and
uncertain supply lines due to civil unrest
in many oil exporting countries. The high
price of oil drove favorable economics
for countries to approve increased
investments to boost production of oil.
The same trend was witnessed across
US, as manufacturers found favorable
economics of oil price and lowered cost
of local oil production (cheaper manpower
and financing) and availability of new
technologies to drive investment in shale
extraction. The investments enabled US
manufacturers to double local production
of crude.
Increased production of shale pushed out
oil imports from Saudi, Nigeria and Algeria
to find a new home. Additionally, higher
production in exporting countries such as
Canada and Russia coupled with the return
to market of some offline production
centers such as Iran, Iraq, Libya increased
forced all producers to compete for
market share across Asian markets
resulting in oil price weakness witnessed
since December 2014.
However the fall in prices was linked not
only to high supply but also from demand
side changes. Global demand tapered as
Europe and developing world economies
continued weakening and consumer
demand for efficient vehicles (cars, planes,
and new ships) grew.
The resultant gap between global supply
and demand widened pushing West Texas
Intermediate (WTI) and Brent prices 40%
below its high of July 2014.
Oil Price Impact On
Exploration & Production
(E&P) Capital Spending
This year’s capital spend on E&P1 is
expected to reduce globally by 8.8%
from US$680 Bn in 2014 down to $619Bn
for 2015. These Oil & Gas budgets
were based on average annual prices
for 2015 to be at $70 / bbl Brent &
$65 / bbl WTI. However, analysts expect
the actual outlay to much lower as the
EIA, EIA Short Term Energy Outlook – May
2015, predicts 2015 prices to hover around
- WTI $ 53.32 / b and Brent $60.79 / b2.
Reference: 1Barclays Global 2015 E&P Spending
Outlook
Short Term Energy Outlook, EIA May 2015
2
The impact of such prices will be felt
across the international markets (ex.
North America) as most IOCs expect to
reduce spending in markets across Asia
Pacific, West Africa and North Sea by
approximately 13% (2015: $189Bn vs. 2014:
$219Bn). The IOCs would aim that such
a reduction in spend will help manage
declining cash flows and allocate the
differential capital to maintain dividend
payments to shareholders. IOCs spends
linked with exploration and earlier stage
development projects first are expected
to first cut from budgets.
However, Barclay’s estimates the E&P
spending across the India, Asia and
Australia markets to fall just 6.1% (2015:
$106Bn vs. 2014: $112Bn) as most
National Oil Companies (NOCs), across the
international markets, are budgeting only
a 1% decline in spend. The NOCs, who are
single largest contributors of the region’s
E&P spend, generally take a multi-year
approach to spend and are less dependent
on cash flows in comparison with IOCs
and International E&Ps are expected to
shore the regional spend. Fundamentally,
it bodes well for KSD.
Impact On Regional Rig
Counts
The impact of fallen prices has seen the
global rig counts (land / offshore – oil &
gas) 16% decline from a high of 1382 in
July 2014 to 1158 in May 2015 3. However,
over the same period the number of rigs
operational across Asia Pacific declined
14% only from 253 in July 2014 to 217
in May 2015 3. The biggest decline in
operational rigs was witnessed across
India, Australia and Vietnam. However,
countries such as Thailand, Malaysia,
Philippines and Indonesia have inversely
grown their rig count (May 2015: 62 vs.
July 2014: 56) by 6. Hence the fundamental
in our region’s drilling activities remain
steady.
Global Demand Outlook
Lower price of oil drives a reduction in price
of global commodities across most sectors.
This in turn reduces the operating cost
for companies, driving greater disposable
cash to invest. Similarly, lower oil prices
offers consumers with more disposable
income, increasing their purchasing
power, driving company revenues and
profits, and increasing employment.
As the impact of low oil kicks in, key
emerging markets, such as China and
India, and developed markets, like US,
are poised to drive a growth in global
consumption of petroleum and other
liquids by 1.2 million b/d in 2015 and an
additional 1.3 million b/d in 2016.
Additionally, the markets expect a
slowdown in production across producers
in US and OPEC as more rigs are expected
to offline which will help drive 2016 spot
prices (target oil price 2016: WTI $65.57 /
b and Brent $70.49 / b).
From a long term perspective, the industry
is still fundamentally strong as fossil fuels
are projected to provide the majority of
the world’s needs, fulfilling 2/3rds of the
world increase in energy demand.
The long term drive for fossil fuel energy
will be fueled by the new energy needs
of a projected 1.6 Billion additional
people in global population (2035 global
population at 8.7 Billion people). Whereas
economically, China and India will be key
drivers of non-OECD growth and are
projected to grow by 5.5% per annum
(p.a.) between 2013 and 2035. By 2035,
they will be the world’s largest and 3rd
largest economies respectively, jointly
accounting for about one-third of global
population and GDP.

Work At Height
One of the biggest causes of major injuries
and fatalities at a workplace is falling from
height, and common causes include falls
from ladders and fragile roofs. All these
accidents can be prevented and minimized
by taking the following precautions:
• Ensure all work at height is properly
planned and organized;
• Those involved in work at height are
competent;
• The risks from work at height are
assessed and appropriate work
equipment is selected and used;
• The risks from fragile surfaces are
properly controlled;
• Equipment for work at height is properly
inspected and maintained.
To further lessen the probability of
accidents from work at height, the
following should also be considered:
• Avoid work at height where possible
(Elimination)
• Use work equipment or other measures
to prevent falls where work at height is
unavoidable (Substitution)
•Use work equipment or other
measures to minimize the distance
and consequences of a fall should one
occur (Engineering and Administrative
Control, Personal Protective Equipment)
By Wayne Chan (SSH)
Fellow colleagues who are planning to
work at height are required to take the
following measures:
• Install temporary edge protection.
• Install proper access to work areas.
• Reduce height of storage so as to reduce
the distance of potential falls.
• Wear the right footwear and ensure the
soles are clean
• Barricade open edges at all times when
not in use.
• Place warning signs to alert and keep
people away from removable sides.
• Ensure fellow colleagues who are new
to the work area are briefed about the
hazards prior to starting work.
SSH Process
Improvement
Why is this same problem not resolved
after repeated occurrences? Can we agree
on an action plan to resolve this problem?
What are the issues that we face repeatedly
in the course of work?
The SSH Logistics and Purchasing team,
a total of 14 members, had the
opportunity to come together to
identify the areas for improvement and
brainstorm for solutions.
The project was divided into 3 phases:
interview, solutioning and progress
tracking.
In the interview phase, the Logistics and
Purchasing team were separately assisted
by Adlerblick Pte Ltd., a company that was
engaged to facilitate the process and guide
the members. Each team used the tools
of Flow Analysis and Process Mapping
to identify 5 issues in their respective
areas. Team members collated data on
the frequency of occurrences to arrive at
3 key issues for them to undertake.
By Goh Sock Choo (KSD)
During the Solutioning phase, both
teams came together to use Cause and
Analysis (aka Fishbone diagram) to narrow
down to 4 key projects. The projects
identified were:
• To improve the efficiency of the GRN
(Goods Received Note ) process
• To improve the efficiency of the Pick
Ticket process
• Control/handling of Random Length
(of pipes)
• Control/handling of Damaged Goods
Team leaders were further guided by
the facilitators through 2 follow-up
progress meetings to arrive at the final
solutions which they will share at the
next Employee’s Conference. So let’s look
forward to that!

5-S Introduction – 13 May 2015
Trainer Mr. Riston Leonard – HSE
Executive PT.AT Oceanic Offshore
5S is the name of a workplace organization
method that uses a list of five Japanese
words: seiri (sort), seiton (straighten),
seiso (shine), seiketsu (standardize),
and shitsuke (sustain). Transliterated or
translated into English, they all start with
the letter “S”. PT ATOO held an internal
training on 5S on the 13th of May. Selected
representatives of each department were
tasked to attend this training course. They
underwent simulation exercises to identify
areas in which application of 5S concepts
would be relevant. This could then be
implemented in the various departments.

Year-End Dinner Of KSD Vietnam
In the cold air of coming spring, with the rush of the last days of the year, the

We hope next year will bring more success.
08
(Dinner And Dance 2015)
Planning began in December of 2014,
with colleagues from across the company
coming together to work on different
aspects of the event; practice sessions
were conducted, prizes for the lucky draw
started flowing in, and everyone played
a part in ensuring that the event will be
a success.
On the day itself, most employees who
participated in the event left the office
by 3pm to doll up to fit the theme – from
hippies to Austin Powers to the local kopi
boy, it was truly a conglomeration of life
in the 60s.
Before the main event started, guests were
invited to play games such as Tikam Tikam
and Tic-Tac-Toe. Activities also included
photo taking and munching on Kachang
Puteh, a popular snack that consists of
assorted nuts and crackers for movie-goers
in that era. The studio was transformed
into a “Kampung” with music that harken
back to old times, dinner concept that is
reminiscent of life then, with a crew of
“Kampung boys and girls” serving food.
The main event began with the
resounding beats of a group of Bhangra
dancers leading guests into the hall and
having them seated. Opening the event,
Chairman Pak Kris Wiluan addressed the
audience. After which, he shared the stage
with colleagues who have dedicated
decades of their lives to the company.
Dinner began with a Chinese New Year
“Lou Hei” followed by many local
delights such as Satay, Otah, Chili Crab,
etc. Everybody started tucking into
their food, while the performances and
games continued into the night. The
audience was thoroughly entertained
by performances of internal staff, as well
as the impeccable hosting of Moe Alkaff.
The event drew to a close after the lucky
draw had been conducted, and as The
Quests started to play their final song,
the participants slowly made their way
out of the event hall, satisfied by the fun
had and gifts received during this Dinner
and Dance.

I queued for about 4 hours in the afternoon to pay my final respects to our Founding Father
Mr Lee Kuan Yew. It was a great honour to be presented with the opportunity to participate in
this event. I truly admire his passion for the country. He made Singapore such a peaceful and
beautiful island. I am definitely proud to be a Singaporean. I am thankful for the volunteers,
officers, ushers & others who had contributed their share at the tribute venues. I feel blessed
to have experienced the togetherness of Singapore.

park-connector-network). It is identified
by the purple line on the map. This is
a very scenic route along Ponggol /
Sengkang waterways. I usually do about
2 to 3 hours of cycling per trip with a
20 minutes break midway. Overtime,
I had made a few friends who are regular
cyclists too. There is a French cyclist, Pierre,
who made a remarkable recovery from
cancer. He continues to cycle to stay fit and
strong. I am of the opinion that exercise
is important in maintaining health, and
strongly advocate that we should prioritize
and find time in our hectic lives to exercise
regulary. I have been cycling for 9 years.
Compared to when I first started, I have
slimmed down to the point that I am
wearing clothes that are 1 size smaller
on a more toned body. I feel more more
energetic too.
What are your hobbies?
The Editorial Team had the pleasure
of personally connecting with John.
In a simple interview, we posed some
questions to get an insight into his
personality.
What are your afterwork
activities like?
Both my wife Sharon and I look forward
to spending time with our children. This
is despite the fact that they are all grown
up and busy with their own activities.
Weekdays’ nights are mostly spent with
Sharon. We enjoyed going for after dinner
walks around our estate. We also chat via
Skype regularly with our son Benjamin,
who is currently studying in the University
of Nottingham. Our daughter, Rachel, is
busy with her college life and we give her
our support as much as we can too.
What about your weekends?
Saturdays are usually spent with the older
folks. We will fetch my mother-in-law over
for the day. She and my mother enjoy each
other’s company, and would spend their
time chatting till dinner time.
Weekends are also time for
recreational activities.
I cycle almost every weekend to keep
fit. More often than not, I will take the
North Eastern Riverine Loop. Check this
out on N Parks website: (https://www.
How did you cope with
shouldering such a great
responsibility at work?
I believe we need to take time off to chill,
and to re-charge.
In Jan 2015, I had the opportunity to go on
a trip with my Singapore Poly classmates
(Mariners) to Chiang Mai. We spent 4 days
golfing at Alpine Golf Course, visiting their
3D studio and singing in Karaokes, it was
fun and we agreed to do it again. Each day,
we sent pictures of our trip to our families,
Sharon commented “It is nice to see you
guys become boys again!” This is one way
of coping, “Catch up with some good old
childhood friends and have fun together.”

I enjoy Botany. Studying about plants
and gardening is a form of relaxation. At
some point in my life, I dream to pursue an
education in Botany and work in beautiful
parks around the world. LOL, I do love the
rainforests and all the species of plants,
animals, insects, that can be found in them.
It never fails to put me in awe that tropical
rainforests took between 60 and 100
million years to evolve. They are believed
to be the oldest and most complex landbased ecosystems on earth, containing
over 30 million species of plants and
animals. That’s half of the Earth’s wildlife
and at least two-thirds of its plant species! I
find it very refreshing and relaxing to walk
rainforests, even if it is a scaled down local
one, i.e. Treetop walk, Bukit Timah Nature
Reserve. If you have an opportunity to visit
a rainforest, do take time to appreciate the
flora and fauna living within and in synergy
with each other. Walk slowly and observe,
and appreciate the wonder of nature. It’s a
whole new world waiting to be discovered,
over and over again.
