Marie-Vincent Foundation Annual Report 2013-2014 Annual Report – from March 31, 2013 to March 30, 2014 This is a report on the activities carried out by the Marie-Vincent Foundation between March 31, 2013 and March 30, 2014. People looking for additional information about the Foundation can visit us at www.marie-vincent.org. This year again, the Marie-Vincent Foundation is taking a stand to support the environment by producing an electronic version of its annual report, available for download on its website. By doing so, the Foundation hopes to encourage its supporters to limit their use of paper by printing only the pages they need. © 2014 Marie-Vincent Foundation All reproduction is prohibited without written authorization from the Marie-Vincent Foundation. 2 Message from the Chair I am thrilled to report that an impressive number of companies and individuals have once again responded to our appeal to their generosity. With their help, the Marie-Vincent Foundation can continue to provide support for the specialized services offered at the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent to children aged 12 and under who have been victims of sexual abuse. Dominique Décarie Drawing on 15 years of experience in executive recruiting, today Dominique Décarie runs her own recruiting firm, Décarie Recherche de cadres. Formerly a partner at Décarie Borreman, a company she co-founded, Dominique was also a partner at Korn/Ferry International, where she directed the financial services division. With a BA in Sociology from UQAM and an MBA from HEC, Dominique Décarie has aspired throughout her career to bring together her humanitarian values and her passion for the business world. Involved with the Marie-Vincent Foundation since 2008, she currently chairs the Board of Directors of the MarieVincent Foundation and the Centre d’expertise MarieVincent. Created in 2005, the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent is a model for intersectoral work and an inspiration to many, even well beyond our borders. At Marie-Vincent, researchers, professionals, and intervention workers from the police, medical, psychosocial, and socio-legal fields work together in an environment adapted to the needs of young victims of sexual abuse. Today, the Centre is considered an essential service for these children and those close to them. By choosing to support us, you are helping to tear down taboos. You are helping us to continue our work with young victims and, by the same token, to reduce the harmful consequences that stem from sexual abuse, both for the individual and within our communities. It’s up to us, individually and collectively, to take an active hand in ensuring the longevity and development of the Centre d’expertise MarieVincent, and the continuity of the intervention work that is done there. Our children deserve to live in a society that keeps them safe. They deserve our vigilance. Above all, they deserve to have us break the silence. That is what you have done by helping us. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! Dominique Décarie President, Décarie Recherche de cadres Chair of the Board of Directors of the Marie-Vincent Foundation Marie-Vincent Foundation 3 A Word from the Executive Director Every day I am moved by the devotion and willingness of our partners and donors. Whether they are responding to our appeal to generosity through a donation, or by organizing a fundraising event, they have the daring and courage to break the silence that is still far too pervasive around the cause of childhood sexual abuse. Danielle Gabrielle Roy Backed by solid experience in business development, Danielle Gabrielle Roy has worked in marketing and communications for the past 20 years. While running her own agency for seven years, she built a dynamic business network, and contributed to the success of many SMEs in Montréal and elsewhere. She moved into the non-profit sector in 2004. Since then, fundraising has been her passion. Before arriving at the MarieVincent Foundation, Danielle Gabrielle Roy managed the Héma-Québec Foundation, as well as the communications department of The Montréal Children’s Hospital Foundation, in the midst of the largest fundraising campaign in the organization’s history. Once again this year, the support of the Marie-Vincent Foundation will ensure a future for the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent and the essential services it provides. The Foundation also helped to advance research through its support of the Marie-Vincent Interuniversity Chair on the sexual abuse of children, and provided training opportunities for hundreds of professionals working with young victims. Finally, the Foundation touched the hearts of thousands of people through its ongoing prevention campaign. None of this would have been possible without your support. To the members of the Board of Directors, and all our partners, donors and volunteers, I offer my deepest gratitude. Your powerful support is changing the course of hundreds of young lives. Thank you, with all my heart! These impressive results would not have been possible without the exceptional contribution of honorary campaign chair Nathalie Bernier, Managing Partner at KPMG, and the efforts of our patrons of honour. On behalf of all the young abuse victims who received treatment adapted to their needs at the Centre this year, we thank you. Hosted by sommelier Jessica Harnois, the evening brought together more than one hundred guests, including the Chief Financial Officers of some of Québec’s largest companies, as well as professionals from the business community. CFOs François Thibault (Metro), Raymond Paré (Couche-Tard), Allan Hogg (Cascades), Dominique Bois (RONA), Jean-François Thibodeau (Boralex) and Michael Ross (Dollarama) traded their calculators for cooking aprons. Paired up with six seasoned chefs from Projet 67, Vertige, Bouillon Bilk, Creamy, Restaurant Chez Victoire and Ferreira, they exchanged both recipes and expertise. The Foundation is very proud of this event that puts generosity at the top of the menu, and that has, as of this year, raised a total of $1 million. We would like to thank all our generous sponsors, and all who participated in the event. From left to right : Dominique Décarie, Chair of the Board of the Foundation, Nathalie Bernier, Managing Partner, KPMG, and Honorary Chair of the 2013 campaign, Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the Foundation with Sylvain Gascon, member of the Board of the Foundation and the driving force behind the event. Marie-Vincent Foundation 7 A New Tradition MARVIN ON THE ROCK… A can’t-miss event for Montréal’s tech community Thank you to our partners Presenting sponsor From left to right: Dominique Décarie, Chair of the Foundation, Dominic Bécotte, founder of the event and member of the Board of the Foundation, Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the Foundation, and Serge Proulx, Vice President of Sales, Corporate Sector, TELUS Québec. The Marie-Vincent Foundation called upon the generosity of Montréal’s tech community during the first edition of Marvin on the rock at the Olympia Theatre on March 25. It was a major undertaking, but the challenge was met head on. Eleven of Montréal’s tech industry leaders showed their mettle by singing in front of their peers, all to help young victims. Spurred on by the cause, more than 300 tech industry players were lucky enough to witness the world premier performance of “dragons” François Lambert and Alexandre Taillefer, and those of Dominic Bécotte (XPND Capital), Michel Boislard (Fasken Martineau), Alan MacIntosh, JeanSébastien Cournoyer and John Stokes (Real Ventures), Ève Laurier (Ève Laurier Communications), Frédéric Harper (Mozilla), Georges Karam (Atelka) and Mario Charpentier (BCF). The result? The event raised $82,000! Hosted by Grégory Charles and with musical direction by Gardy Fury, the aim of the event was to bring people together for something unique and different. In this, it succeeded in spades, and there is no doubt this innovative concept will become a tradition. Marie-Vincent Foundation 8 An Unbeatable Adventure 2014 Morocco Expedition Once again this year, the Marie-Vincent Foundation organized its infamous expedition to Morocco. From February 15 to 23, 2014 a group of nine benevolent trekkers, including humorist Cathy Gauthier, journeyed 60 km on foot through the Moroccan desert. Traveling at the gentle pace of the caravan, participants were inspired to push their limits as they discovered the Moroccan Sahara. Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the Foundation, participated in the expedition this year. Each trekker paid for the expenses associated with their trip, as well as raising much-needed funds for the Marie-Vincent Foundation. Our participants succeeded in raising more than $61,000 for abused children. Hats off to all of them – and thank you! Thank you to our partners From left to right: Danièle Tourillon, François Paradis, humorist Cathy Gauthier, Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the Foundation, Chantal Lamarre, Vicky Lafantaisie, guide Lucie Dumont, Chrystelle St-Pierre, Sylvie Bélanger, and Jacynthe Lavoie. Marie-Vincent Foundation 9 A Very Special Event L’ÉCHAPPÉE BELLE MARIE-VINCENT A new opportunity to help the Foundation The Marie-Vincent Foundation and the Fédération québécoise des sports cyclistes (FQSC) joined forces to organize l’Échappée BELLE MarieVincent, a women-only cycling challenge. The event, held on September 28, 2013 in Bedford, was hosted by well-known journalist and television personality Yvan Martineau, while Radio Canada sports reporter - and cycling enthusiast Diane Sauvé acted as the official spokesperson. Foundation Chair, Dominique Décarie participated with Christine Labelle. “I am very touched that the Marie-Vincent Foundation thought of me for such an important cause. In Québec, nearly 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys are sexually abused before age 18. The numbers make my blood run cold. With these children in mind, I decided to take on the role of spokesperson for the event. The money we raise will fund specialized services for young victims of sexual abuse and their loved ones, as well as training, research, and prevention activities. These children are the reason I will be riding on September 28, and the reason I hope you will join me!”, announced Diane Sauvé a few weeks prior to the event. True to her word, she joined 270 other participants for a beautiful ride, a country lunch, and a stroll through the exhibitor’s village where more than a dozen booths were on display. Many of the event’s participants chose to raise critical funds to help young victims. Thanks to these women, more than $43,000 was raised. Thank you! Yvan Martineau, host of the event, with Diane Sauvé, spokesperson for L’Échappée BELLE Marie-Vincent. Thank you to our sponsors Marie-Vincent Foundation 10 Inspired Initiatives CN Hockey Greatest Stars Challenge The 9th edition of the CN Hockey Greatest Stars Challenge was held on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The match was as exciting as always, and raised an amazing $50,000 for the Marie-Vincent Foundation. We extend our deepest thanks to the CN Employees’ and Pensioners’ Community Fund for their long-standing support, as well as to everyone who helped to make the event a success. From left to right: Vee Kachroo, Vice President, CN Supply Chain Solutions and Vice Chairman of the CN Employees’ and Pensioners’ Community Fund, Guy Lafleur, Olivier Chouc, Vice President, Law at CN and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CN Employees’ and Pensioners’ Community Fund, Chantal Lauzon, Director-Assistant to the CN Employees’ and Pensioners’ Community Fund, Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the MarieVincent Foundation, and Guy Carbonneau. Royal LePage celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, and kicked off the festivities with a gesture of generosity. An amount of $10,785 was raised during their 100th anniversary gala. This sum will go to support the specialized services offered to young victims of sexual abuse by the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent. Pictured here are Johanne Robert, Director of Services at Royal LePage, and our executive director Danielle Gabrielle Roy. Royal LePage celebrates 100 years with a gesture of generosity Thank you to everyone who contributed to this event, and to all the Royal LePage offices that organize garage sales to benefit the Foundation year after year! Marie-Vincent Foundation 11 Inspired Initiatives Even Marvin was at the starting line of the National Bank One for youth Bicycle Tour. Every year, the Marie-Vincent Foundation enjoys the privilege of relying on kind-hearted individuals to organize a wide variety of fundraising activities to help young victims. Of the many events which helped us to fund our mission in 2013-2014, we would like to highlight the National Bank One for youth Bicycle Tour, which raised $45,000 for the Foundation, as well as the 14th Annual Golf Classic Tournament of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, which generated more than $60,000. Hats off to these two organizations for their incredible support! We would also like to call attention to the fundraising activities of the employees of Dale Parizeau Morris Mackenzie, the breakfasts organized by Étienne Lafrance, and the Un voeu pour les enfants event, organized by the students of Zoom Académie. Finally, we wish to convey our sincere gratitude to all the volunteers who are there for us each and every day. Thank you for being our childhood friends! Marie-Vincent Foundation 12 Foundation Achievements Awareness campaign As part of our mission, we continued our efforts to bring the eyes and ears of the public to the Foundation’s awareness campaign, launched last year with the support of Marketel. The campaign’s two television spots, Comme un grand and Première fois, which present a troubling parallel between the life of a normal child experiencing the usual firsts in the context of a traditional childhood, and that of a child who has been sexually abused, were aired on Astral Media’s (now Bell Media), ICI Radio Canada, RNC Média, and RDS, all free of charge. As for our digital messages, no less than 1,362,113 impressions were donated by online broadcasters and specialized websites Sympatico.ca, Radio-Canada.ca, Vtele.ca, Au féminin.ca, Doctissimo.ca and La Presse.ca. Finally, we would like to thank Pattison for donating signage for the print version of the Première fois message, which was displayed in Montréal and Québec last May through July, and Astral for donating billboard space. Thank you once again to these broadcasters and specialized sites for their efforts on our behalf, and to the media team at Marketel. Radio time was donated by NRJ 94.3, Rouge 107.3 and the RNC Média stations, for the Peurs d’enfants spot. Marie-Vincent Foundation 13 Foundation Achievements The Marie-Vincent Interuniversity Chair: to develop cutting-edge scientific knowledge about sexual aggression towards children Since its beginnings, the Marie-Vincent Interuniversity Chair on the sexual abuse of children has supported the research activities of the Centre d’expertise MarieVincent. Associated researchers and research assistants from the Université de Montréal and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) pursue research projects that fall into one of the three following research axes: Axis 1 | Evaluation of the needs and abilities of sexually abused children and their families Axis 2 | Evaluation of the services offered by the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent Axis 3 | Study of the varying development paths of children involved in situations of sexual abuse The mission of the Chair is to develop leading-edge scientific knowledge about sexual aggression towards children. Objectives include: Increase knowledge to allow intervention workers involved with the Centre d’expertise from different areas of practice to further develop the specialized services they offer and improve the quality of services offered to victims and those around them. Share the results of their research in order to ensure that practices evolve and new learnings are developed. Provide high level training to future researchers, who will benefit from an exceptional research environment thanks to their proximity to the Centre and its services. Allow the Centre to exercise a leadership role in the development of specialized services. This year, the fourth since the Chair was founded, was very productive. In addition to continuing the projects launched by the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent over the past three years, the Chair was able to follow groups of children recruited from other intervention centers, as well as control groups from daycare settings, and conduct longitudinal follow-ups with the Centre’s clients after the termination of services. The Chair collaborated with the Centre’s professional team to develop intervention measures which will be the subject of a research evaluation in the coming year. Marie-Vincent Foundation 14 Foundation Achievements The Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent: a unique and innovative centre benefitting young victims of sexual abuse The Foundation created the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent in 2005. The aim of the Centre is to advance and spread their cutting-edge expertise on the topic of sexual aggression towards children aged 12 and under, by bringing police, medical, socio-legal and psychosocial services together under one roof, along with research and a bank of knowledge. At the Centre, researchers, professionals and intervention workers from various disciplines work together in an environment adapted to the needs of children. They combine their skills and knowledge in order to develop state-of-the-art tools to deal with the sexual victimization of children, as well as offer specialized services. A multidisciplinary team of professionals evaluates the needs of sexually abused children, and offers specialized treatment services, as well as personalized support to parents. Police and medical services are also available. Throughout 2013-2014, thanks to the support of many loyal donors, the Centre d’expertise was able to continue its work with sexually abused children and their families. All together, between March 31, 2013 and March 30, 2014, there were 195 police investigations, 46 medical exams, 300 evaluations, 671 sessions of specialized treatment and 166 meetings for personalized services. As well as improving the services offered to young victims and their families, the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent offers training to intervention workers and students, affirming its role as an innovative leader in the development and transfer of practical knowledge about sexual abuse. Over the course of the past year, the Centre d’expertise Marie-Vincent continued to grow its training capacities. Since its creation in 2005, nearly 2400 professionals from across Québec have received training. These professionals come from the police, medical, psychosocial and socio-legal sectors.
