Newsletter-Winter-2013 - Dubois County Community Foundation
Winter 2014
Imagine what we can do together.
Leave a Legacy
A luncheon with Dr. Gene Tempel
Founding dean of the Indiana
University Lilly School of
Philanthropy, Dr. Eugene R. Tempel
spoke to local professional advisors
at the “Leave a Legacy” luncheon
hosted by the Community
Foundation this past October at
KlubHaus 61 in Jasper.
Dr. Tempel and his colleague, Dr.
Angela Bies, spoke to approximately
70 local CPA’s, attorneys and
financial advisors, in an effort to
strengthen the philanthropic sector
in Dubois County. Both Dr. Tempel
and Dr. Bies have local ties to the
community.

Donor Relations; Leave a Legacy Luncheon on October 11, 2013.
Dr. Temple and Dr. Bies challenged the group of advisors to think
about their legacy and how to engage clients in “what matters.”

Luncheon about the difference
5% can make in Dubois County.

Included in the presentation was the Boston College study that
estimates $688 million in Dubois County will transfer from one
generation to the next over the next decade.
The Community Foundation continues to partner with local
professional advisors, with a common goal of increasing the

STORY

Elliott Family Endowment
Established: December 2007
In Memory of Casper “Cap” and Constance Elliott and children Russell and Sarah.
Among the many people who love the City of Jasper, the history of the
Elliott family is filled with irreplaceable memories of Old Jasper.
From Casper’s father “Pop” Elliott’s involvement with three Jasper factories to his own lumber yard
and love of the outdoors, this area of Downtown Jasper has set the scene for much of the Elliott
family’s success. His wife, Connie Elliott, proudly raised their 12 children in this same area where her
grandfather, John Melchior helped to build St. Joseph’s church, again placing Old Jasper deep into
the family’s hearts.
For three generations, the Elliott family has continued to foster their love of the city, including
through grants from their Family Endowment to ROJAC. Supporting the Redevelopment of Old
Jasper doesn’t only assist in enhancing their beloved city, it keeps their family history alive forever.
Dubois County Emerging Leaders kick off 2014!
Emerging Leaders enters its
third year of giving as the local
giving circle kicks off 2014.
The group finished the year by
making a $5,000 grant to
Family Scholar House, a
nonprofit whose mission is to
end the cycle of poverty by
giving single- parent students
support to earn a college
degree.
The group voted via a live grant
party where members spoke on
behalf of local charities.
“It was a great way to get
closer to our nonprofits, by
learning more about their
mission and how they would
use the grant,” said Jessica
DeLorenzo, Emerging
Leaders Chair.
Emerging Leaders for Dubois
County is a giving circle – a
group of young adults who
pool their funds to strengthen
their communities, while
increasing their understanding
of and participation in
philanthropy.

Community Force Goes LIVE!
The Foundation is pleased to
introduce Community Force, our
new Scholarship and Grant
Application online management
program. Community Force is a
paperless, cloud based system
that is streamlining our application and reporting processes.
The Scholarship Application
went live on January 1. The
program provides a userfriendly environment for
students to view and apply for
scholarships awarded by the
Foundation.
The new application includes
the ability to prepare a student
profile and login as often as
needed to complete the
application.
The Grant Application is
expected to debut in
February. It will enable the
nonprofit organizations in our
county to create a user profile
that can be used each time a
grant application is submitted.
“We want less
work for the students
and nonprofits when
applying for funding,
and Community Force
will help with that.”
Nona Baker,
Programs
Among the many enhancements to previous processes,
the new program will include
simpler reporting and the
ability to transmit required
documents with an upload
feature.

Leaving a Legacy
It’s hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.
For female athletes, coaches, and parents of Jasper High School, Coach Pat Zehr
paved the way for women’s sports. As Jasper’s first women’s volleyball and track
and field coach, Pat led team after team to success. More importantly, Coach Zehr’s
positive influence on countless Jasper athletes and passion for competition pushed
her school to excellence.
Friends established the Pat Zehr Memorial Scholarship Fund not only to commemorate
Pat’s accomplishments, but to allow a beloved coach’s legacy to continue giving back to
Jasper female athletes forever.
Coach Pat Zehr
died in 2011.
