Experience Jasper
as if for the first time
Focus on local foods along
Highway 16 and Jasper
How many times have you driven west on Highway 16 and never
stopped except for a break and to buy gas? On this Jasper Food
Discovery Tour you’ll experience the secrets of the route known
only to locals. Instead of a full-speed-ahead race we’ll make
stops, both there and back, that will delight, intrigue, and feed
your tummy and imagination. See Highway 16 in a new light.
Tour Schedule – July 30 to August 1, 2016
Saturday
We’ll meet at the City
Market in Downtown
Edmonton and depart
for Edson. We’ll tour
Bench Creek Brewing
and picnic at the
Galloway Station
Museum. We’ll stretch
our legs in Hinton on
a Beaver Dam Walk.
Then on to Jasper to
check into the hotel
and walk to dinner.
Sunday
Breakfast at the
Wicked Cup and then
a food-inspired
aboriginal program by
the park interpreters.
Enjoy free time to
shop before heading
to Jasper Park Lodge
for a cooking class
and dinner in the new
Orso Trattoria. There
will be time at JPL to
explore the grounds.
Monday
After a fresh pastry at
the Bear’s Paw, we’re
back on the road for a
hot breakfast at the
Overlander Lodge.
We’ll pause at Urban
Forest Design, then
proceed to Big Rock
Berry Farms, a u-pick
farm, before getting
back to Edmonton in
time for supper at
home; tired but happy.
Jasper is a favourite destination for
Edmontonians. You’ve driven through
the park gates to go skiing, camping, or
sightseeing. You’ve enjoyed the fresh
air, the hiking trails, and the sky tram.
You’ve watched animals, trains, and
glaciers. You’ve shopped and partied.
On this trip you’re going to get all of
those PLUS experience the culinary
highlights of Jasper.
Down the street from the Park Place
Inn, we’ll dine at Evil Dave’s Grill where
the food is wicked. They use Alberta's
finest beef, pork, bison, wild boar
bacon, and poultry (they also have
vegan and vegetarian options). The
sauces are made in house and
prepared fresh daily.
We’ll experience the new Orso
Trattoria at Jasper Park Lodge and
make our pasta two-ways for dinner.
There will be time to enjoy a “dark and
stormy” and watch the mountains in the
lobby lounge or visit the Art Gallery or
golf shop.
Breakfasts will be at the Wicked Cup
and Bear’s Paw Bakery with a hot
breakfast at the Overlander Lodge just
outside the park
on the way home.
When you see
Jasper through
the eyes of a
foodie, you’ll
never see it as
just a ski and
hiking destination
again.
Jasper the Bear
will be waiting to
welcome you
back.

Picnic at Galloway Station Museum
Bench Creek Brewing - Edson
The Galloway railway station was a Canadian Northern Type
C station built in 1911. It was located 28 km west of Edson and
served as home and office to station agents. The building was
moved to its present location in Edson and converted into a
museum in 1981. The refurbished museum’s official opening
was in September 2011. Our picnic lunch stop here will give
you time to visit the museum exhibits and gift shop that
features items created by local artists.
Maybe they spend too much time in the wild where
survival of the fittest makes creating the alpha brew
a high priority. Years of brewing excellence has led
Bench Creek Brewing to a new mastery of the
brewing craft, producing distinctive and imposing
beer that can stand up to any of its kind. Sampling
will be encouraged before our picnic lunch.
Jasper Park Lodge and Orso Trattoria
Sitting amongst the trees in their own little forest 115
km west of Edmonton is a gallery where Enzien and
Christian live, work and sell most of their work. They
are intrigued by wood-fire ceramics, an ancient
technique that has a wonderful continuity from clay
processing through to firing. We’ll see them at the
City Market on Saturday and again at the gallery on
our return.
In 1813, the North West Company established a fur trade
outpost named Jasper House. When Jasper National Park
became official, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway established the
town site in 1911.
The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was originally called “Tent
City.” Today this historic property consists of the main building
and 56 adjacent cedar cabins for a total room count of 446.
The spa reflects the energy of the mountains, rivers, and
waterfalls surrounding it. The Stanley Thompson designed golf
course integrates the natural surroundings while embracing
the culture and heritage of the site. With the best available
local food and these mountains, the chef couldn’t resist
bringing you one of the world’s most celebrated culinary
traditions in the new Orso Trattoria. We’ll make pasta two
ways (with a professional European pasta machine and by
hand) and enjoy this new dining experience at JPL.

Big Rock Berry Farm
Big Rock Berry Farm is a local fruit farm between
Spruce Grove and Devon. They provide locally
grown fresh fruit for themselves and their customers
in a fun and inviting way. Customers can pick fruit
for themselves or purchase pre-picked baskets of
strawberries, saskatoons, and raspberries. We’ll
load up with fresh picked fruit before heading home.
