1st Pachanga fest rocks

Latino rock ruled at Austin’s first Pachanga
Latino Music Festival, held May 31 in the
city’s Waterloo Park as the capper to
Austin’s third annual Latino Music Month.
Besides some of the area’s greatest Latino
bands — Michael Ramos’ Charanga
Cakewalk, Grupo Fantasma and Vallejo (Alex
Vallejo and band manager Rich Garza
organized the event) — the party (that’s
Anglo for pachanga) featured a variety of
talent from Texas and beyond, including
buzz band Girl in a Coma, from San Antonio,
and Tijuana’s Nortec Collective Presents:
Bostich + Fussible, a conglomeration of live
players, DJs and non-stop visuals.

In the spirit of the day, Vallejo covered
Wall of Voodoo’s “Mexican Radio” and War’s
“Low Rider”; Grupo worked some of
Santana’s “No One to Depend On” into
“Gimme Some,” a song from the band’s
about-to-drop release, Sonidos Gold (out on
June 17). They also paid homage to
“Somebody named Prince.” That would be
the guy who’s given them loads of work
lately, from Super Bowl parties to Grammy
shindigs, not to mention taking the band’s
JewMex horn section to the Coachella
Festival and on The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno. Proceeds from the festival, which
attracted 3,000, benefited the Austin
Latino Music Association.
We couldn’t be happier with the way the
event turned out,” said Garza. “We were a
first-year event with no brand; the attendance met our expectations, especially with
the scorching heat.”
BettySoo wins New Folk contest
Five Texas songwriters (out of an initial pool
of more than 800 contenders) made it to the
semi-finals for the 2008 Grassy Hill Kerrville
New Folk competition, but in the end, only
one emerged among this year’s top six finalists: Austin’s BettySoo (aka Betty Soo Terry).
The Spring native, who is featured as a
“Spotlight” artist in the current issue of Texas
Music, wowed the contest’s notoriously picky
judges with the title track from her 2007 EP,
Never the Pretty Girl, and a brand new song,
“Glass Heart.” The other finalists were Devon
Sproule of Charlottesville, Va.; RJ Cowdery of
Columbus, Ohio; Hans York of Seattle, Wash.,
and Robby Hecht and CJ Watson, both of
Nashville. The other Texas semi-finalists were
Molly Venter, Shelley King, Datri Bean and
Claude “Butch” Morgan.
Country Thunder cancelled
The Country Thunder USA music festival
originally planned for May 29-June 1 near
Dallas at Thunder Ridge Range turned out
to be a false forecast. Artists who had been
scheduled to perform at the festival included Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Dierks
Bentley, Pat Green, Kellie Pickler and Joe

Glenn Starnes said the cancellation was
caused by a depressed economy, low ticket
sales and the financial outcome of last
year’s festival in Texas. Concert organizers
say the decision will not affect the Country
Thunder event taking place July 16-19 in
Twin Lakes, Wis., which will feature
Sugarland, Underwood, Bentley, Taylor
Swift, Miranda Lambert, Sara Evans and
others.
Jessica Simpson’s country debut
Move over, Miranda, and make room on the
country airwaves for another blonde spitfire
from North Texas. After conquering — or at
least leaving an indelible impression on —
the worlds of pop music, reality TV and the
Dallas Cowboys, Jessica Simpson released
her first country music single last week.
Titled “Come on Over” (Shania who?), the
song was co-written by Simpson herself
with Rachel Proctor and Victoria Banks. The
curious can hear a stream of the song on
Simpson’s Web site — if they haven’t already
heard it on their local country station. The
single entered Billboard’s Hot Country
Songs chart at No. 41 — a record debut for a
solo artist with no history on the country
chart. Simpson’s debut country album is
due out this fall.
More grief for Emilio
Emilio Navaira may be on the mend after
nearly losing his life in his harrowing Easter
Sunday bus crash, but the Tejano star is
about to face the music. According to the
Houston Chronicle, two of his band members
who were also injured in the crash, Daniel
Sandoval and Pedro Ramirez, have now filed
a lawsuit against Emilio Inc. (Navaira’s corporate identity), seeking unspecified damages.
Police reports say Navaira, who was driving
the tour bus when it crashed, was legally
intoxicated at the time.

Eli Young Band lands deal

announced that they had signed to
Nashville’s Universal South (home to Cross
Canadian Ragweed). Their major-label
debut, which will feature 10 new songs as
well as a remake of “When It Rains,” from
2005’s Level, is due in September.
The Old 97’s, that beloved twang-rock band
from Dallas, and Houston native/current
Austinite Hayes Carll are joining forces for a
Texas-centric tour this summer. Carll opens
the first leg of the tour, through June 20.
The band plans to trek to the Midwest and
Canada, then to the Pacific Northwest and
on down to California in support of their
new CD, Blame It On Gravity, released May
13. This disc has a bonus DVD edition featuring lead singer Rhett Miller conducting a
tour of the band’s old hangouts from their
Dallas days, before Miller moved East and
Murry Hammond went West.
ACL Festival grids released
Looking forward to catching both Beck and
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss at this year’s
Austin City Limits Music Festival? Better pick
one or the other — or start seriously training
for the sprinting you’ll be doing from one
end of Zilker Park to the other in order to
hear at least half of each set, because the
two marquee acts will be playing opposite
stages at the same time. The schedule grids
for the Sept. 26-28 festival were unveiled at
www.aclfestival.com on June 3, along with a
handful of new additions to the lineup. New
adds include Texans Rodney Crowell, the Old
97’s, the Black & White Years and Dan Dyer;
also added were Blues Traveler and Abigail
Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet featuring
Béla Fleck.
Who’s going to Willie’s Picnic?
Well, for starters, Merle Haggard, Pat Green,
Ray Price, Los Lonely Boys, Asleep at the
Wheel, David Allan Coe, Ray Wylie Hubbard
and Billy Joe Shaver, that’s who. And probably a whole lot of other folks, too — artists,
that is; it’s pretty much a given that the
fans will come in droves. Tickets for the big
July 4 family gathering at the Verizon
Wireless Amphitheatre in Selma (just north
of San Antonio) are on sale now.
Is Denton the next Austin?
Denton band Midlake was featured in a May 11
New York Times article highlighting the
Denton music scene. According to the article,
more than 100 bands are active in the area;
the story also reported several music insiders
are now calling Denton “the next Austin.” A
small-town feel and independent spirit, combined with access to the University of North
Texas’s College of Music, were among the reasons cited for Denton’s emergence as a live
music hotbed. Other area bands mentioned
were Centro-matic, Mandarin and Vortexas.
Lakeway goes live again
Lakeway Resort and Spa has partnered
with KGSR-FM (107.1) to create the second
annual Live at the Lake summer concert
series. The series begins June 1 and continues every Sunday through Aug. 24 (with the
exception of July 6). Scheduled to perform
are Bob Schneider, nelo, Seth Walker,
Jimmy LaFave, Band of Heathens, Guy
Forsyth, Carolyn Wonderland, Shawn Sahm
& the Tex-Mex Experience and Fastball. The

a favorite tombstone epitaph he had once
seen on a gravesite near Amarillo. It’s

The Braun Bunch
Why settle for one Braun Brothers release
when you can have two? Hot on the heels of
Reckless Kelly’s upcoming release,
Bulletproof, will be a new album from Cody
and Willy Braun’s younger brothers’ band,
Micky & the Motorcars (featuring Micky and
Gary Braun). As previously reported,
Bulletproof hits stores June 24, and the
Motorcars’ Naive drops July 29. Fans of both
bands looking for late-summer road trip can
start making plans now to attend the Braun
Brothers Reunion Festival Aug. 7-9 in Challis,

You might know Austin’s
Craig Marshall as the lead
singer of the jazz quartet
Lucky Strikes. But, did you know he’s got a
knack for the pop tunes, as well? Point of
View flaunts a range of influences, from
’60s pop to steel-guitar infused country.
Marshall delivers what we all love about
pop music: catchy hooks, dark lyrics
wrapped in happy melodies, jangling tambourines — it’s all there. Several tunes
scream for airplay, the most obvious being
“Radio Girl,” a lilting number in the spirit of
Fastball/early Elvis Costello. Begging the
return of a favorite on-air personality, the
song fades in and out with a radio-frequency effect that desperately attempts to tune

In a city where talent runs
like tap water, and a
singer-songwriter can be found at every
street corner, coffee shop and hipster’s
sofa, it’s hard to stand out. With Ostrich,
Austin musician Brent Adair not only
stands out, but shines. Adair’s second
release is full of lush imagery, depicting life
and love, restlessness and renewal, travel
and settling down. Producer Billy Harvey
(Bob Schneider, Kacy Crowley) adds a playfulness that nicely complements Adair’s
sensitive lyrics and melodies. Tapping into
modern influences like Death Cab, Bright
Eyes and M. Ward, Adair’s songs are accessible and familiar, yet distinctive and fresh.
From the bouncy ballad “Time Away” to
the quirky, funny “If I Could Sleep,” Adair
demonstrates a breadth of musical and
lyrical versatility. “Superman” blends a
touch of punk with rollicking country and a
chorus reminiscent of early Eagles,
America or Ryan Adams circa Gold. The
haunting keyboards on “Arctic” accompany
lyrics that are poignant and honest (“You
came crashing in, and poured right out of
me”), yet not overly sentimental. A simple,
acoustic arrangement delivers the inquisitive ache of “Inside Me.” And, like the note
on the table in “Untied,” Adair has a knack
for words “eloquent, balanced, and sweet.”
The CD closes with the instrumental
“White Fingers,” offering a chance to
reflect, make sense of it all, and write your
own ending. Ostrich, with its focused and
crisp arrangement, represents significant
growth from Adair’s first effort, 2004’s
Pieces, and firmly establishes him in
Austin’s exceptionally prolific pool of talent.

Gasoline. Produced by fellow Americana music veteran Joe Henry, this is Crowell’s debut for
Work Song/Yep Roc Records, following a five-year (2001-2005) comeback run on Sony that
produced the albums The Houston Kid, Fate’s Right Hand and The Outsider. All three of
those releases were met with considerable critical acclaim, though Crowell says that his sessions with Henry, recorded last year in Pasadena, Calif., resulted in “some of the best performances I’ve given to date.”

became progressively more and more rock.
That rock ’n’ roll background eventually crept
back in. This album reflects that we are a mix
of everything. We grew up listening to rock
and country and blues, and just about every
other thing, too. We finally found the perfect
mix of all our favorite music.

bed. How did you decide on that concept?

manager. They were doing a movie called
Roller Dollz, and it’s just really that simple.
He liked our music, thought it would be good
for the movie. And as a cross-promotional
thing, they said they would film a video for
us. So we enlisted the help of Austin’s own
Hotrod Honeys roller derby team to come
down. They were in our video, the girls in the
film were in the video, our fans were in the
video. We should get a rough edit back in a
couple of weeks, and hopefully it will hit the
airwaves as soon as possible.
And how far are you willing to take this
tie-in? Are you prepared to strap on the
skates and pads?
T: I thought you were going to say strap on a
dildo. I’m not willing to take it that far! But I
have my own roller skates that I brought
down for the video, and I strapped those on.
I love roller skating.
I know Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel
has been a mentor of sorts to you. What's
the best advice anyone, Ray or otherwise,
has ever given you?
T: Yeah, Ray’s in our corner. The best advice I
got from Ray was, “move to Austin.”
J: The best advice I ever got was, “do unto
others as you would have others do unto
you.” That’s just something you kind of overlook, the real simple things sometimes. But
