Welcome from the Brewster Chamber of Commerce!
BREWSTER 2012
This year’s Best of Brewster magazine is dedicated to a favorite natural resource: our beaches!
Table of Contents
Do you remember the excitement you felt as you got ready for the first beach-trip of the summer? Tom Stringe’s cover art – titled Almost There – conjures up those memories. Gathering
up the towels and toys; packing the cooler with a day’s supply of sandwiches; stuffing everything into the station wagon; and then finally heading down the road. Can you hear your Dad
saying it? “We’re almost there!”

Brewster is bordered on the north by Cape Cod Bay and our saltwater beaches are one of the
most popular destinations in town. Each public beach is named for the road that leads to it,
making them easy to find. And twice a day (almost) the Brewster Flats beckon young and old
to explore the tidal pools and mudflats that are exposed as Cape Cod Bay recedes.
Then there are the fresh water beaches at Brewster’s ponds. Here you can swim, canoe or
kayak, go fishing from the shore or boat, or just relax under the canopy of trees surrounding
their shores.
And when you’ve had enough of the beaches for the day, Brewster has much more to offer. In
these pages, you’ll find information about attractions, shopping, food, services, lodging and
real estate, as well as general information about the Town of Brewster.
Whether you’re here for the day, the week or year-round, we know you’ll find the Best of
Brewster!

foul balls, test their fastball on the radar gun, make new friends on the playscape and
get autographs from players.

exclusively by Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club.
Enroll by the week or day for mornings full of fun,
games and instruction by Cape League coaches

needs of residents as well as visitors.
Doing home and garden improvements? The local hardware store and
nurseries have everything needed from paint to paving stones to pet
supplies and casual furniture.
Antique galleries are abundant in Brewster, found all along the Old
King’s Highway. Snuggled in between are shops offering local handcrafts, jewelry, home décor, specialty clothing, hand-made cards, toys,
books (new and used) and of course, souvenirs of Cape Cod and
Brewster.
Shops can be found throughout town: visit www.google.com/maps and
search Brewster MA to see exactly where!
For every $100 spent in local businesses, $68
comes back to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
If you spend that in a national chain $43 comes
back.
If you spend that online, $0 comes back.
Join the 3/50 movement!
Picture 3 businesses you would miss if they disappeared. Now, commit to spending $50 per month
in each of them and remember that 68% of your
dollars spent return to the local community!

Beaches

Brewster is famous for the Brewster
Flats, a phenomenon created by the ebb and
flow of the daily tides when the waters recede
out of Cape Cod Bay over 1 mile to reveal
sandbars, clam beds and tidal pools teeming
with sea life. To experience this at least once a
day, visit one of our beaches. From east to west
these are: Crosby Landing, Linnell Landing, Ellis
Landing, Breakwater Beach, Saint’s Landing,
Mant’s Landing and Paines Creek. There are:
portable toilets from June - Labor Day; No
lifeguards; handicap access (beach wheelchair
may be reserved from Council on Aging 508896-2737.)

The Grist Mill, beside Stony Brook, is a quiet
reminder that this location was a busy 19th
Century industrial area. The Factory Village
produced goods such as shoes, furniture
and fabric. The present Grist Mill was built in
1873 on the foundation of an old fulling and
woolen mill. Water flowing over the water
wheel creates power to grind corn between
giant millstones. The town bought the mill
and surrounding area in 1940. After recent
years of refurbishment the museum is open
and the mill is grinding corn again. Open Sat
10am-2pm, late June-August.

Brewster’s harbinger of spring is the news
that “The herring are running!” From midApril through early May, hordes of herring
migrate up Stony Brook from the salt water
of Cape Cod Bay to spawn in the pond waters
of West Brewster. The Herring Run’s paths
are a great place to observe the alewives’ awe
inspiring journey up the fish ladders. The
Run is considered a Cape Cod classic. There
is picnic table at the site.

in Brewster

20 years!
Fishing
& Boating
Bay fishing in Brewster waters includes striped bass, bluefish, tautog,
and flounder in the spring, summer, and fall, and cod in the winter.
Charter fishing boats are available at Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis, at
Rock Harbor in Orleans, and Saquatucket Harbor in Harwichport.
Salt water licenses are now required unless you are on a chartered
boat. There are no boat ramps at any of Brewster’s saltwater beaches.
Refer to the Directory on pages 18 – 20 for charters available.
Brewster has 48 freshwater ponds and a diversity of game fish. Brewster has boat ramps at Sheeps Pond (3HP motor), inside Nickerson
State Park (10HP), on Long Pond and Upper Mill Pond. Jet skis are

BREWSTER
Services
Brewster’s first business was established in
1663 when a grist mill was built on what is
now Stony Brook. Since then, entrepreneurs
have been hanging their shingle here, meeting the needs of the local community.
Today, Brewster is the ‘professional hub’ of
the Lower Cape, home to all types of engi-
neers, dentists, architects, massage therapists, construction and trade specialists, chefs
and fine artists to name a few. These types of
businesses fit nicely into the rural environment and they provide local residents with
jobs that pay well. The owners and managers
are involved in the community and volunteer
on Town committees, with local public charities, and to present local events that help to
bolster our tourism economy.
The next time you’re looking for a service
– for your home, for yourself or for your
business - remember that your chamber of
commerce is better than the Yellow Pages
because we know our members!
The Stony Brook Gristmill and Higgins Farm Windmill are
featured in the Brewster Chamber of Commerce logo,
honoring the long history of business in town.
Logo designed by Amy Mason, Stony Brook Design.

Brewster’s Full-Time Voice for
Part-Time Residents.
We represent more than 800 families who own more than half of Brewster’s residential real estate.
Founded in 2002, BAPR works side-by-side with our year-round neighbors,Town
of Brewster Selectmen, and other officials to build awareness and understanding
of important issues affecting part-time and full-time town property owners—
taxes, insurance, town budgets, conservation policies, zoning/planning and more.
We support and contributes to important initiatives in Town, such as the
emergency heating fund and the placement of potentially life-saving defibrillators
in public buildings by the Fire Dept. We also support local non-profits that create
and improve the quality of life we all enjoy in Brewster, such as the Crosby Mansion,
the Meeting House restoration and, of course, the Brewster Whitecaps.

Lodging
Lodging in Brewster includes everything from
rustic cottages to homey bed and breakfasts
to elegant inns and resorts. Many properties
are open year-round and most B&B’s and inns
include breakfast for their guests. Reservations
are required during the peak summer season:
it is not unusual for Brewster’s rooms to be
completely sold out in mid-August!
There are also many private homes and cottages available to rent in Brewster. This can be
an economical option for families, wedding
parties, reunion groups and others. There are
number of reputable real estate agencies that
can assist with this - see page 20 of the Directory for a complete list.

Camping in Brewster is very popular and the camp grounds are often
booked years in advance, so call them early to “get on the list” for an
open spot! These are generally open from late Spring through the Fall
until it’s too cold!
Crosby Mansion
Evidence of Brewster’s sea captain forefathers is seen all over town as
many of their homes are now inns and bed and breakfasts where visitors
can experience the elegance of another era. Crosby Mansion is one such
home, now owned and maintained by the Town of Brewster as a living
history tribute to the past. Located off Main St. (Rte. 6A) on Crosby Lane
in East Brewster, the elegant grounds are open to the public for walking
all summer, and the mansion is open with guided tours during open
houses held in July and August – visit www.Brewster-CapeCod.com for
dates.
The mansion overlooks Cape Cod Bay, with architecture featuring a
fanciful collection of turrets, towers and columns. Built in 1887 by
entrepreneur Albert Crosby, the building is full of wonderful details
inside and out. It’s interesting to note that the mansion was actually built
around Mr. Crosby’s grandparents’ original Cape Cod homestead, and a
small door inside connects the two buildings. For more information call
508-896-1744.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Brewster is a uniquely residential community
that happens to also be a popular visitor destination on Cape Cod. It is the rural character,
with tree-lined streets and winding sidewalks
along historic Old King’s Highway that draws
people here and in many cases pulls them in to
move here.
Brewster is part of the Nauset Regional School
District encompassing Brewster, Orleans,
Eastham, and Wellfleet students. Students in
grades Kindergarten through 2nd attend the
Stony Brook Elementary at 384 Underpass
Road (508-896-4545) and 3rd - 5th graders
attend Eddy Elementary, 2298 Main St. (508896-4533).

Cape Cod Rail Trail
Walk, run, bike or rollerblade along 25 miles
of scenic paved paths where train tracks once
carried passengers and supplies to local Cape
Cod destinations. The trail stretches from Dennis to Wellfleet, winding past Brewster’s forests,
cranberry bogs and ponds. In East Brewster,
the trail intersects with an additional eight
miles of bike trails in Nickerson State Park.
There are numerous places to get on the trail:
the intersection of Route 137 and Underpass
Road features a parking area and convenient
access. Explore the Rail Trail Extension through
Harwich to Chatham, ending at Depot Road.
Punkhorn Parklands
Over 800 acres of conservation land owned by
the Town of Brewster with wooded trails that
pass by lakes, ponds and marshes begins at the
end of paved Run Hill Rd. There are miles of
great trails, so wear your hiking boots. Maps
($1 each) are available at the Information
Center.
Brewster also has private schools. The Laurel
School, 1436 Long Pond Road (508-8964934) accepts children from nursery school
to 5th grade in the school year. The Saltbox
School, Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade
is at The Family Schools, 3570 Main Street
(508-896-6555) where there are year-round
programs for infants to 5th graders.
