British Association of the Var Putting people and social needs together since 1998 August 2013 Association Loi 1901 No: W831001750 www.baofthevar.com Newsletter No 135 "A GOOD time was had by all" A quote made famous by a 1937 book of poems by Miss Stevie Smith, absolutely describes the BATs’ entertaining "50 shades of BATs". The company comprised Ivan Rose who devised it, Cheryl Mainwaring, director, and cast members Esther Flanagan, Lesley Honeywell, Peter Mainwaring, Ian and Pat Powell. They enjoyed their roles as much as the audience did watching them. The sketches were taken from original material by, amongst others, Pam Ayres, Joyce Grenfell, Spike Milligan and Rudyard Kipling perfect material for continuous laughter. The cast captured the comedy with plenty of energy and the good timing necessary to perform their lines from these masters of entertainment. Esther also gave us a rare experience by treating us to a traditional African dance. Thanks must go to Jilly Cunningham in Puget and Rob and Esther Flanagan in Villecroze for welcoming the cast and audience into their homes and gardens. A free glass of wine was offered on arrival by the Chateau de la Martinette and everyone brought with them a picnic and a chair so that when the fun and frolics had finished they could share their dishes around the pool. For all "passengers", the wine was offered at a very reasonable rate to accompany their meal. A healthy profit of 700€ was made for the BAV welfare fund. The only disappointing aspect was that no more than 10% of BAV members made the effort to support an excellent evening of entertainment and I hope that next year will see an improvement on numbers. In fact, it you are interested in joining BATs and being part of the 2014 production please contact Ivan Rose. ivanrose@notimetolook.eu. Please contact Philip at ************@gmail.com Chairman's Report We, as a Committee, have been reviewing our approach to charity and welfare provided by the Association. This review has been wide ranging and is on-going but follows my philosophy as intimated in the past that welfare extends well beyond assisting impecunious individuals and also embraces looking after the general well-being and quality of life of our members. The first noticeable result of this approach has been the issue of the Children's Activity Booklet which, as stated last month, has been well received. We have, however, now reviewed the existing loans, some of which date back to 2008 and 2009, where the ability of the beneficiary to repay the loan is proving impossible, likely to cause hardship, or is in serious doubt and we have taken the decision to write off these loans. As a charity we feel that we should alleviate problems and not cause further hardship or add to individuals' worries. This has resulted, to date, in a very touching note from one beneficiary expressing how relieved they are to have the pressure of the loan removed and thanking the BAV for its support and assistance. We are now continuing to review the welfare aspect of the organisation with a view to perhaps extending the sports and other activities or, perhaps, contributing towards French lessons for the Neighbourhood Networks. More on these aspects later. Liberation celebrations Don’t forget to support your local ceremonies and celebrations relating to the liberation of the Var by British and US soldiers in World War II. These take place on different days around 15 August, according to the date on which your area was liberated, but there are major celebrations in Le Muy and La Motte as this was where the first paratroopers landed. Check with your Mairie or tourist office for more details. There are still some “old soldiers” from the UK and the US who manage to attend, and it is moving to share these ceremonies with them, and hear their stories of battle. It is also heart-warming to see how much respect is shown to them by the French locals. Go along and “fly the flag”! British Association of the Var Welfare Coordinator Ann Mitchem 04 ********* or ********** welfare@baofthevar.com Page 5 HALF-YEAR ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT – 1 January 2013 to 30 June 2013 inclusive. I present the 2013 Accounts to 30 June 2013, together with my financial report, with our reserves remaining healthy. Funds Before 22 May 2013 there had been little change in the cash reserves of the Association held in four areas: A small Current Account with Crédit Agricole; a tax free ‘Livret A’ Account with Crédit Agricole earning relatively low level of interest but available when needed; A Fixed Term Deposit Account of 120,000 euros earning 5% interest and outstanding Loans totalling 17,233.55 euros at 01 January 2013. Since then another 6,500 euros of the loans outstanding since 2008 have either been repaid or written off leaving 10,733.55 euros only outstanding. The remaining 5 loans are currently being reviewed. Sadly our high interest, long term Deposit account which had produced such good interest had run full term after earning a further 6,000 euros in interest over the past year. Since then, as much of the previous investment as legally possible has been placed into the Livret A account to continue to earn tax free interest, whilst exploring what options available would give a relatively good return on the original investment, and we expect to make a decision shortly. Income Main income for the year, as before, comes from the following: Subscription from Members, Donations, Interest, Sponsorship and Functions and it is really important that Members continue to support the Functions we organise, some of which this year have been charged at cost to encourage new Members to join. Coffee mornings, Cotignac’s in particular, also really helped raise income and give a chance to get together with old friends and make new at the same time. Some also have books available to browse whilst there. The Soirée and Boules at La Motte also raised an excellent 605 euros. In addition and right at the tail end of June were the new style BATS shows and the whopping 700 euros income produced from this added substantially to our coffers but was unable to be banked in time to be included in the current Functions Statement – the full break- down of this will be in the end of year report at the next AGM Expenditure We continue to look hard at our costs of running the Association and how and where we may be able to reduce them so, as promised, this scrutiny of all expenditure will continue. Page 6 You will however probably realise that the Children’s Activity Booklet which you all received was expensive to produce. However it has been widely acclaimed as being very helpful and the cost of production was substantially off-set by Barclays sponsoring this by 500 euros which had been received in advance before the end of June so has been included in the Accounts, but the actual printing costs of 1,190 euros are still to show so please allow for this when reading the Accounts. Welfare costs have again been low this year but there has been movement upward in July so we will see…… Finally, using previous report formats on our main costs and the first 6 months of 2012 as the comparative: Comparitive Costs over 6 months Welfare Costs Newsletter & Address Books AGM Printing & Posting 2013 1424.90 2012 € 3,658 € 2,556.49 € 2,711 € 378.34 € 4,359.73 € 799 €7,168 Tous au Restaurant This initiative is in its fourth year and will take place between 16 and 22 September 2013 all over France. The first of these, to Parc Phoenix in Nice, reflected in the photos the diversity of interest to be found within such a relatively small area. Tropical plants, exotic animals and whimsical statues were all in the mix of photographs the group selected for viewing. In an entirely different vein, the photographs shown from the group’s recent visit to the remains of the Malpasset Dam near Fréjus offered a much more sombre view of the region. The large boulders and giant slabs of concrete swept from the dam for kilometres down the valley like pebbles were a vivid reminder of the terrible force of nature when unleashed. No further meetings are planned for July and August, but it is to be hoped that group members will be able to use the many opportunities provided by the rich variety of local events taking place to add to their portfolio of provençal life.
