Richard Huneger Last week's Pastor's Keyboard outlined for us some of the flames that we must keep fanning in order to keep our light from being snuffed out. Our light is the proper response to Roe v Wade (1973) which nullified the laws of all the states forbidding or regulating abortion, and, essentially "institutionalized" private decision versus societal order in the whole matter of protecting life. The Supreme Court (Justice Blackmun) argued that since the ancient Romans (pre-Christian) did not consider pre-natal life "a person in the full sense," neither need we be bothered by such trifling scruples. Of course, the Court did not carry this reasoning to its logical conclusion. In pagan Roman tradition, a newborn child had to be presented to the father. If the father accepted it [suscepit], the child would live; otherwise, not. Hmmm, might we therefore just "do likewise"? As an aside, at Mass, the congregation take the part of the anxious mother and family at this crucial moment. After the bread and wine are prepared, the priest says, "Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptiLent Begins on ble to God the almighty Father"; the people respond, "May the Lord accept [suscipiat, in Latin] this Ash Wednesday sacrifice, at your hands...." That is, we pray that God will not react to our offering as something to be February 10th rejected and tossed out, like an unwanted child (in Roman times, typically, a girl; the same problem causing a 70,000,000 shortfall in women in China today)! Masses are: Even though the Court did not declare Roman precedent sufficient for us to implement the 7:50 a.m. English "suscipit" moment in America, within a year or so, James Watson and Francis Crick (the British sci8:30 a.m. School Mass entists who discovered DNA) did so. I discussed their proposal with my students at LaSalle. Instead of having abortions (which may damage the reproductive system and may cause further problems for 12:05 p.m. English future, "chosen" births), the woman should just give birth to the child normally, and then there should 4:00 p.m. English be a 72-hour "pre-personhood" waiting period, during which a decision could be made, prior to the 6:00 p.m. Multi-Lingual newborn infant "becoming" a "person" in law. The decision should, they said, be made on the basis of the child's potential for contribution to the future of the species genetically. As a rule of thumb, 8:00 p.m. Spanish children should be killed "who would not make suitable marriage partners ... if, for instance, the child were born blind" (broader than the notion of inheritable genetic defects). A few years later, I met a woman who worked for the US Bishops Pro-Life Office. Her name was Mary Martin. She became one of the first sisters in the Sisters for Life religious order started by Cardinal O'Connor. I once asked her And support St. Joseph School how she got involved in pro-life. She said that at the time of Roe v Wade she had been working at a nursing home as an R.N. Suddenly she and other nurses noticed that they were getting "different Saturday, April 30, 2016 orders" regarding elderly patients. "We could see that with Roe v Wade, a green light had been giv“An Evening in Monte Carlo” en; the Court had winked on the sacredness of life, and everyone knew what it ultimately meant." St. Joseph School Adult Only Event The Catholic Sentinel in Spring 1973 wondered whether Catholic hospitals and doctors would be at Illahe Country Club "forced" to do abortions against their conscience (or lose their tax-exempt status) (the Hyde Amendment resolved that, for awhile). At LaSalle we discussed whether the day would come (it has) when medical students would be forced to prove proficiency in doing abortions in order to graduate and get a license to practice. The pressures in this regard are one of the main topics among medical students Today the Knights of each year at Catholic Medical Association conferences. Of course, they're not new. I remember getColumbus is sponsoring a traditional breakfast after all ting a letter around 1972 from a California nurse who was trying to find a program for more training in surgical procedures. This was pre-Roe v Wade, but already, she had to go to 17 hospitals before she of the morning Masses to benefit Seminarians from this found one that would allow her to do so while not participating in abortions. There is a "thin line" between "permission" and "mandate." We are often told to be "tolerant," but tolerance has been defined parish. as the temporary modus operandi between one dogmatism and its replacement by another. Does Please Join Us! your "right" (to government non-interference) to do something imply it to be my "duty" (to be compelled by government) to participate in or enable its "effective" exercise? Does free speech as a right St. Joseph’s Peace and require us to provide printing presses for everyone? or to publish for them if they don't know how to Justice Committee operate one? Can a physician say, "I don't do that or refer for it"? Secular thinking considers such will present a DVD by reticence to "effective referral" to be benighted in the extreme. Of course, what if some day abortion Claudia Larson on the life of were to be declared a hideous barbarity? Would those who did not actively resist (today) to a legal Dorothy Day, procedure be retroactively condemned in court for having failed to speak up? Secular folk criticize Catholic Social Reformer, Pius XII for "not having done enough" (even though we now know that he was actively involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler). Recently even elderly bookkeepers and paramedics in their 90's who Thursday, February 18th at worked at Auschwitz have been sentenced in German courts, because, although they did not "do" 7:00 p.m. upstairs in the killing (perfectly legal, even commanded in Nazi Germany), they "knew" it was going on, and St. Joseph Parish Center didn't resist! Information for St. Joseph Parish St. Joseph School recently received a grant from the Salem Catholic School Foundation to use for technolo- gy. Our original request for grant money from the boiler project came in under budget, so we requested a reallocation of the remaining funds and were approved in the amount of just over $16,000 for technology. With this money St. Joseph School will be purchasing a mobile lab for students to use technology in the classrooms, mobile devices for teachers so they can better collaborate and work at professional development sessions, and upgrade half of the computers in our media lab. We are so excited to see this technology be used by students and staff to impact their instruction. We thank the Salem Catholic School Foundation for their continued support of our school.
