Richard Huneger How many of you have children? how many are adults, and what is their relation to the Church? In a prior parish I conducted a census survey, and found that the vast majority of families said that all their children had departed from Catholic practice, or perhaps only one still practiced. How often one hears, "Father, we thought we were doing all we could to pass on the faith; where did we go wrong?" Well, let's see. A July 24 National Catholic Register article commenting on Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Mike Pence's "evangelical Catholic" self-description, noted that about 13% of adult Catholics consider themselves "evangelicals," about one-fourth of the 52% of adult Catholics that have left Catholic practice; only about one-fifth of the 52% return to Catholic practice, but most of the rest are still "Catholic" in some vague sense. It turns out that many of them simply didn't find in their family, their parish, their Catholic practice, a "personal relationship" with God, or even with Christ. Things seemed "external," but there was not "I live now, not I, but Christ liveth in me" (St Paul), or "I in them, and they in me" (Jesus of his disciples at the Last Supper, St John's gospel). In fact research indicates that only about 60% of self-identified Catholics are convinced of God as a "personal" reality, a spiritual reality rather than as an impersonal cosmic force. Something happens when the Mike Pence "conversion" kicks in, where you "give yourself to Christ." Article author Sherry Weddell, co-director of the Catherine of Siena Institute, and author of Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, which I enjoyed reading a few years back, says that the best predictor of adult church attendance by those raised Catholic is that they have converted to a Protestant religion! Is there any hope? Yes, she says. Most of those "ex-Catholics" would consider returning. And, in her experience, many times, before they depart from Catholic practice, all that is needed is someone to listen to their questions, and help them sort through things, but most of all, that they hear from other Catholics (especially their family), how God is working in their lives. If our Church "life" is not offering this, we are in trouble, because today, more than ever, if you are going to be a Catholic, you have to do it "on purpose." St Ignatius of Loyola (feast day, July 31), who lived in the 1500's, also has something to teach us. He was a 30-year-old Spanish nobleman soldier, wounded in battle (as had been St Francis), by a cannon ball shattering his leg while fighting the French. Being very vain about his appearance, he insisted that his leg be broken and re-set (sawing off a stump at one point) three times (without anesthetic) until it was "done right." The man had tremendous stamina, and tolerance for pain, and during a nine-month recovery grew bored. He found that when reading the lives of Christ and the Saints, he found his spirits lifted by their asceticism, their self-renunciation and discipline, compared to the downer that he experienced after reading titillating knightly romances. The extraordinary deeds of the saints, of course, sprang from an equally extraordinary sense of the presence of God, a personal bond with the Lord. But Ignatius did not have that, until one night, he had a vision of Mary that for hours flooded him with happiness, combined with a revulsion for his former dissolute life – and at that point, unobserved by history, God gained a follower, as "the soldier" unconditionally surrendered (cfr A Iverleigh, The Great Reformer, 2014). Eventually St Ignatius published his experiences under the title Spiritual Exercises, a book of tips, and a guide to follow during a 30-day retreat (some parish programs offer this over a period of months). In it he helped us see how to focus on Christ, to be free of idols of status, money, and power, to see God in all things, to be brought into direct emotional encounter with Jesus Christ through graphic, imaginative contemplation of Scripture passages, and to focus all our energies on promoting the "greater glory of God" ("ad maiorem Dei gloriam"), that is, focusing, in short on "more" ("magis" in Latin), a sort of continuing transcendence of self "as I am" toward the self God is calling me to "become" to "hallow his name." The first step is to become "indifferent" to everything but that which leads us toward the end for which we are created, and "hostile" and "intelligent" regarding sins and their roots in our hearts, putting ourselves into "conversation" with Jesus "suspended on the Cross" (please note the crucifix in sanctuary!), and living our lives holding on to the wounded hand of Jesus. Then, we start hearing the "summons" to work for his Kingdom, to understand how much is at stake, and to comprehend the supreme importance of the "humility" by which we "choose" to follow Jesus in his Paschal Mystery, within the community and Church, as contributors to its mission, and supported by Jesus in his people.
